The 2002 performance in Japan, which was the last of Prince’s life. The legendary recording, which is the masterpiece, is now available on the Permanent Preservation Press 3CD.
The performance of “November 28, 2002: Osaka Castle Hall” was imbued with the masterpiece. It is the transcendental audience recording. “ONE NITE ALONE … Tour” is his last visit to Japan and is archived with various masterpieces in our shop. Let’s look back on the schedule at that time as well as organizing the collection.

Above, all 9 performances. The peak was in 1990, when we visited stadiums around the world, but 2002 was the highest number of performances in history. The Osaka performance of this work was the 8th performance, which is the final stage. Why is this work recorded at such a show called “the best masterpiece”? It’s because it has a special show content and a sound that is too special.
First, the sound. This is really miraculous. An original master who was once introduced as “ONE NITE ALONE IN OSAKA”, the recording artist who worked on it is a master of battle who has made historical masterpieces with many artists mainly in Osaka. The collection is full of masterpieces, but the closest thing to this work is David Bowie’s “A REALITY IN OSAKA: THE LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN (Wardour-169)”. It was an important work of Bowie’s last performance in Japan, but what attracted more attention was the high sound quality that was too transcendent. This work is a collection of the same recorders as that historic masterpiece. In fact, the sound of this work is an amazing audience that does not give up half a step to Bowie’s super masterpiece. I mean, don’t think of it as a sound that you imagine in an “audience” anymore. Although the realistic cheering and clapping between songs is like an audience seat, the musical sound is just like going on the “sound board”. Prince’s singing voice gently whispers in his ear, and Scat directly conveys his passion. Of course, John Blackwell & Rhonda Smith’s groove bounces abundantly, and Maceo Parker’s saxophone is lustrous. Each instrument, each note has a distinct musical tone, and the balance is perfect as if it were an official mix.
The perfect balance is not limited to musical tones. This work also contains the great cheers of the Japanese who have been waiting for Prince for 6 years, but even that is the perfect balance. The heat is firmly engraved on the thick cheers, but it is thick but not big. It’s not as small as a sound effect, without threatening the slamming music. While giving a feeling of hot air to “Osaka!”, Which is heavily used by Prince, it never blocks it.
However, no matter how miraculous the sound is, the show content will not be a “masterpiece” in Gudaguda. In that respect, the show that was imbued with this work is a great performance that is said to be a “miracle night.” There are several reasons for this, but first and foremost it’s long. Prince changes the set list and arrangement depending on the day, but on this day he continued to play with the motivation to spring up, and it became a long show of about 2 hours and 50 minutes. Speaking of the symbol of this tour, the official live board “ONE NITE ALONE … LIVE!” Is famous above all, so let’s organize the set while comparing here.

… And it looks like this. Not all of the above because I’ve omitted the detailed medley arrangements, but still this volume. It was said that the Nippon Budokan was long on the 2002 Japan Tour, but it was the longest record with 6 songs more than that. And it’s not just long that matters, but Prince’s passion for creating this long show is amazing. The day was in great shape, and no matter how much the song was released, the fountain of passion did not die. In the first place, to say that it will be a long show means that the encore is long. In other words, the singing voice and the guitar are hot and the scat is sharp with each song without losing passion until the very end. It is said that “Prince gets better as the tour progresses”, but it is a passionate performance that seems to prove it.
And it is the breath of the audience that further enhances the “miracle”. It will be the encore of DISC 3 that feels it even more. The curtain was closed once with a piano medley, and even though the guest hall was already attached, the voice calling for an encore did not stop, and Blackwell appeared and performed a drum solo. Guided by that, Prince reappears with a light blue guitar in one hand and sings “Peach”. After another 14 minutes of “Days Of Wild”, the cheers haven’t stopped yet. It seems that some spectators had begun to return, but in response to the cheers that couldn’t be accommodated, Prince reappeared in one acoustic hand. Sing “Alphabet St.” and “Last December” with a single voice of “Alright!”. No matter how good Prince himself is, he alone will not continue his passion. Enthusiasm is born only by interacting with the enthusiasm of the audience. It’s also the ideal document.
Prince who finished playing and left with a word of “goodbye”. This work ends with him. The most beautiful, hottest, and longest performance at Osaka-jo Hall on the last Japan tour of his life. Prince and the audience who were there and had a passion for music. It is a famous recording during the famous recording that depicts the “miracle night” created by all of them with “miracle sound”.
The quality of the performance, the quantity of the songs, the passion that supports them … all of them are permanently preserved with a miracle sound. It is a cultural heritage that remains in the history of Japanese Western music, and is the best masterpiece that Prince left in Japan. 以上、全９公演。絶頂期は各地のスタジアムを巡った1990年でしたが、公演数では2002年こそが史上最多。本作の大阪公演は、その最終盤にあたる８公演目でした。そんなショウで記録された本作がなぜ「最高傑作」と呼ばれているのか。それは特別なショウ内容と特別すぎるサウンド兼ね備えているからに他なりません。
まず、サウンド。これがもう本当に奇跡的。かつて『ONE NITE ALONE IN OSAKA』としてご紹介したこともあるオリジナル・マスターでして、手掛けた録音家は大阪を中心に数々のアーティストで歴史的な傑作をモノにしてきた歴戦の達人。そのコレクションは名作揃いなのですが、本作に近いところではデヴィッド・ボウイの『A REALITY IN OSAKA: THE LAST CONCERT IN JAPAN（Wardour-169）』でしょうか。ボウイ最後の日本公演という重要作でしたが、それ以上に注目を集めたのは超絶すぎる高音質。本作は、あの歴史的大傑作と同じ録音家のコレクションなのです。実際、本作のサウンドもボウイの超名盤に半歩も譲らない驚異的な次元の極上オーディエンス。と言いますか、もはや「オーディエンス」でイメージするサウンドとは思わないでいただきたい。曲間のリアルな声援や手拍子には客席らしさもあるものの、楽音はまんま「まるでサウンドボード」を地で行くもの。プリンスの歌声は優しく耳元で囁き、スキャットはたぎる情熱そのものをダイレクトに伝えてくれる。もちろん、ジョン・ブラックウェル＆ロンダ・スミスのグルーヴは豊かに跳ねまわり、メイシオ・パーカーのサックスはどこまでも艶やか。１つひとつの楽器、１音１音の楽音がクッキリと切り立っており、バランスもまるでオフィシャルでミックスしたかのように完璧なのです。
完璧なバランスなのは、楽音だけではない。本作には６年にわたってプリンスを待ち望んでいた日本人の大歓声も収録されているのですが、それさえもが完璧なバランス。その熱さは分厚い声援にしっかりと刻印されているものの、厚くはあっても大きくはない。ぶっとくガッシリとした楽音を脅かすことなく、効果音というほど小さくもない。プリンスが多用しまくる「大阪ぁ！」に熱い空気感をまとわせながら、決して遮らないのです。
しかし、いくらサウンドが奇跡的でもショウ内容がグダグダでは「最高傑作」にはならない。その点、本作に吹き込まれたショウは“奇跡の夜”とまで言われている大名演なのです。その理由はいくつかありますが、まず何と言っても長い。日によってセットリストやアレンジを変えるプリンスですが、この日はとにかく湧き出す意欲の赴くままに演奏し続け、約２時間50分にも及ぶ長大なショウになったのです。このツアーの象徴と言えば、何よりも公式ライヴ盤『ONE NITE ALONE… LIVE!』が有名ですので、ここで比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。細かなメドレー・アレンジを省略しているので上記ですべてではないのですが、それでもこのボリューム。2002年のジャパンツアーでは日本武道館も長いと言われていましたが、それより６曲も多い最長記録でした。そして、重要なのは単に長いだけではなく、このロング・ショウを生み出すプリンスの情熱こそが素晴らしいのです。この日はとにかく絶好調で、いくら曲を繰り出そうとも情熱の泉が枯れるそぶりも見せない。そもそも、長いショウになると言うことはアンコールが長いということ。つまり、最後の最後まで情熱を潰えることなく、１曲１曲で歌声もギターも熱く、スキャットもキレにキレている。「プリンスはツアーが進むほどに調子が良くなる」と言われますが、まさにそれを証明するかのような熱演なのです。
そして“奇跡”を一層高めているのが、観客の息吹。それを殊更に感じるのはDISC 3のアンコールでしょう。ピアノメドレーで一度は幕を閉じ、すでに客殿が付いている中でもアンコールを求める声が鳴り止まず、ブラックウェルが登場してドラムソロを披露。それに導かれるようにして水色のギターを片手にプリンスが再登場して「Peach」を歌い出すのです。さらに14分に及ぶ「Days Of Wild」の後も、まだ喝采は止まらない。一部の観客は帰り始めていたようですが、それでも収まらない歓声に応えてアコースティック片手にプリンスが再々登場。「Alright！」の一声と共に「Alphabet St.」「Last December」を歌うのです。いかにプリンス自身が絶好調であっても、彼１人では情熱は続かない。観客の熱狂と交感してこそ熱演が生まれていく。その理想的なドキュメントでもあるのです。
弾き語りを終え、「さよなら」の一言を残して去っていったプリンス。そんな彼と共に本作は幕を閉じます。彼の生涯で最後のジャパンツアーでも、もっとも美しく、もっとも熱く、もっとも長かった大阪城ホール公演。そこにいて、音楽と情熱を交わしたプリンスと観客たち。その総てが生み出した“奇跡の夜”を、“奇跡の音”で描ききった名録音中の名録音です。
演奏の質、楽曲の量、それらを支える情熱……そのすべてを奇跡のサウンドで永久保存した３枚組です。まさに日本洋楽史に残る文化遺産であり、プリンスが日本に残した最高傑作。その輝きを永遠に残すプレス３CDでいつでも、いつまでもお楽しみください。
