PRAYING MANTIS, the magician of twin harmony who created the masterpiece “FOREVER IN TIME”, which is also called the masterpiece. As with the album, an original recording that allows you to experience the performance in Japan that was realized with Tony Ohora is now available.
The performance of “November 11, 1998: Nagoya Bottom Line” was imbued with this work. It is the best audience recording. Speaking of PRAYING MANTIS, along with RIOT, a band loved by Japanese fans and supported for many years. He has visited Japan many times, and the pattern is left in the official live album. I think it was 1998 that embodied the “Mantis statue” that fans envisioned, which is the most wonderful in the history of visiting Japan. After all, at that time, he sent out the masterpiece “FOREVER IN TIME”, which is one of the masterpieces along with “A CRY FOR THE NEW WORLD”, and played a lot of the masterpieces. Moreover, in the “A CRY FOR THE NEW WORLD” era, Colin Peel withdrew before coming to Japan, but in 1998 Tony Ohora accompanied him as the album. That beautiful “FOREVER IN TIME” world was reproduced on stage.
However, despite the decisive visit to Japan, the official work was not realized. Although it is not unreasonable because the official live works such as “LIVE AT LAST” and “CAPTURED ALIVE IN TOKYO CITY” continued, it was a fate that Mantis was not left to show his true character. This work is a superb full live album that will relieve such dryness and regret!

Above, all 4 performances. The Nagoya performance of this work was the third concert. This work recorded at such a show is a transcendental sound that is very thick and close to the sound. Recently, it is the latest work of the DAT master that has been repeated in our shop, but it is a masterpiece that is out of the question in the series. Anyway, everything is in front of you and near your ears. The drums are so real that you can feel the vibration of the skin, and the twin harmonies and synths are so delicate that they never mix even if they are intertwined. And vocals. Ohora’s singing voice is at a breathing level, and the chorus of the Troy brothers is so delicate that each person’s voice can be clearly discerned, so the layered feeling is even more beautiful.
The feeling of a closed room unique to a club scale ……, you can enjoy the feeling of synchronization with the band as if you were in the rehearsal room. If you express it for our customers, it’s like “the strongest sound (actually, it’s recorded by another person)”, and if you express it generally, it’s a super direct sound that can only be called “outflow sound board”.

And the performance that spells the masterpieces is the best. Unlike the album, the performance sound is very tight because of the super tight sound, and each sound of the five people who created “FOREVER IN TIME” is very vivid. And the classics revived by Ohora’s singing voice are really good. To be honest, it’s hard to say that the ensemble that wasn’t played so much outside Japan is fluent, but it’s not as bitter as Gary Barden in “CAPTURED ALIVE”. The “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark” sung by Baden is quite tough, but in other repertoires it re-dyes with a Mantis-like worldview.
It is a live album that has been made into a live version of the masterpiece “FOREVER IN TIME”, and the past masterpieces have been dyed with Ohora’s singing voice. A valuable original recording that allows you to fully experience the “PRAYING MANTIS-ness” that fans want with a thick sound. Even so, I wanted this 1998 visit to Japan to be an official work … A new masterpiece that revives such regrets. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1998年11月11日：名古屋ボトムライン」公演。その極上オーディエンス録音です。PRAYING MANTISと言えば、RIOTと並んで日本のファンが愛し、長年に渡って支え続けてきたバンド。幾度となく来日を果たし、その模様は公式ライヴアルバムにも残されています。そんな来日史の中でも最も素晴らしく、ファンが思い描く「マンティス像」を体現してくれたのは1998年だったのではないでしょうか。何しろ、当時は『A CRY FOR THE NEW WORLD』と並ぶ名盤中の大名盤『FOREVER IN TIME』を送り出し、その名曲群もたっぷりと演奏してくれた。しかも、『A CRY FOR THE NEW WORLD』時代は来日前にコリン・ピールが脱退してしまったわけですが、1998年はアルバム通りにトニー・オホーラが帯同。あの麗しき『FOREVER IN TIME』世界がステージでも再現されたのです。
しかし、それほど決定的な来日だったにも関わらず、オフィシャル作品化は実現しませんでした。『LIVE AT LAST』『CAPTURED ALIVE IN TOKYO CITY』と公式ライヴ作が続いていたために無理もないとは言え、マンティスの本領発揮が残されなかったのはあまりに、あまりに悔しい運命でした。本作は、そんな乾きと悔しさを晴らしてくれる極上のフルライヴアルバムなのです！
思わずメーターが上がってしまいました。頭を冷やして基本から始めましょう。まずは、当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを振り返ってみましょう。

以上、全４公演。本作の名古屋公演は、その３公演目にあたるコンサートでした。そんなショウで記録された本作は、まさに極太・ド密着の超絶級サウンド。最近、当店で連発しているDATマスターの最新作なのですが、シリーズでもズバ抜けた大傑作。とにかくすべてが目の前・耳元。ドラムは皮の振動が感じられるほどにリアルですし、ツイン・ハーモニーもシンセもきめ細やかで絡み合っても決して混じり合わないセパレート感が絶大。そして、ヴォーカル。オホーラの歌声は息づかいレベルですし、トロイ兄弟のコーラスも１人ひとりの声がしっかりと聞き分けられるほど繊細だから幾重にも重なる重層感も一層美しい。
クラブ規模ならではの密室感……と言いますか、リハーサル・ルームに同席しているかのようなバンドとのシンクロ感を味わえる。当店のお客様向けに表現するなら「まるで最強氏サウンド（実際には別人録音です）」ですし、一般的に表現したら「まるで流出サウンドボード」としか言いようのない超ダイレクト・サウンドなのです。
そんなド直球サウンドで描かれるのは、オホーラを迎えて甦った哀愁ハードロックの極地。ここで名曲選を整理してみましょう。

そして、その名曲群を綴るパフォーマンスこそが最高。超タイト・サウンドだけにアルバムと違って演奏音がムキ出しで、『FOREVER IN TIME』を創り上げた５人の１音１音がえらく生々しい。そして、オホーラの歌声で甦ったクラシックスも実にイイ。正直なところ、日本以外はそれほどライヴをやっていなかったようなアンサンブルはこなれているとは言いがたいのですが、『CAPTURED ALIVE』のゲイリー・バーデンのように苦笑いとはならない。そのバーデンが歌っていた「Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark」は結構厳しいものの、他のレパートリーではマンティスらしい世界観で染め直してくれるのです。
名作『FOREVER IN TIME』のライヴ篇にして、過去の名曲もオホーラの歌声で染め変わったライヴアルバムです。ファンが望む「PRAYING MANTISらしさ」を極太サウンドでフル体験できる貴重極まるオリジナル録音。それにしても、この1998年の来日こそオフィシャル作品にして欲しかった……そんな悔しさも今さら甦る新名盤。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。
