A miraculous masterpiece that recorded a big hit will be restocked with the 2nd press! The official daimyo board “Umaguma” live disc is expanded and complete, and the revival of the daimyo board with the highest peak of sound has been updated.

The reason why this work was said to be a miracle is because it exceeded the official standards in terms of both “length” and “sound quality”. The first live album of “Umaguma” was “39 minutes 36 seconds”, but this work is the same live but “54 minutes 2 seconds”. Moreover, it is the world’s first live album spelled out with an unknown upgrade sound.
“It’s like a dream, like being picked up by a fox.” So why was the extended version realized, and how was the unknown sound possible? The key to that was the newly discovered “FLAT TRANSFER MASTER”. It was a surprising Omoto master that was brought from overseas through its own route.
In a little more detail, the mixdown and mastering have been completed, and the masters distributed for the press in a certain country (let’s just say “a certain European country”). It was discovered after more than half a century. What was recorded there was exactly the sound of the original master itself. In the collector world, cutting accuracy is something that is pursued as Mato 1, trying to get one step closer to the sound of the recording, but this time it is not in that dimension. After all, let alone pressing, before being cut. In other words, “sounds that have never been converted into physical grooves” were preserved.

This is the secret of the unknown sound that will be updated to the highest peak. However, it is not the “complete version”. “FLAT TRANSFER MASTER” is a 100% complete sound that has been mixed down and mastered. In other words, the scale is the same as the final official work. How did the expansion become possible?
The second key is the “rough mix”. As a matter of fact, a rough mix take different from the main part was discovered at the live of “Umaguma”, and we have introduced it as part of “RARITIES (Oenone-001A / B)” at our shop. Not only was the mix different, but the performance part was recorded for a long time, and the official work included “Interstellar Overdrive”, which was cut.
And this work makes full use of the above two soundboards. The four main songs “Astromony Domine”, “Careful With That Ax, Eugene”, “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun”, “Mystery (A Saucerful Of Secrets)” is spelled out with the highest peak sound of “FLAT TRANSFER MASTER”, and complements the interval and “Starry Sky Drive” with a rough mix. Of course, the complementary parts are also mastered precisely and strictly to bring them as close to “FLAT TRANSFER MASTER” as possible, realizing a natural and seamless live album that you will not notice unless you are told (even if you are told?).
This work, which was born in this way, lets you experience the “full show of 1969”. The live disc of “Umaguma” is edited from two types, “Birmingham performance on April 27, 1969” and “Manchester performance on May 2”, but in fact, the content is almost almost Manchester performance. Only about 3 minutes of “mystery” (“0:00-3:25” on the 5th track in this work) is the Birmingham performance. And only the same five songs as this work were played in Manchester. In other words, this work is an extended version of the traditional name board and at the same time it is also a “full version sound board of Manchester performance (replaced only 3 and a half minutes)”.
“Real Umaguma” embodied by unexperienced sounds
In order to convey the content accurately, I wrote it in a slightly casual tone, but the listening response of this work was shocking. First, the sound is deep. It surpasses all official CDs that have been released so far. As a matter of fact, “Umaguma” was degraded when it was first released on CD in 1987, and has been repaired by digital processing on subsequent remastered boards since 1994. However, while this work remains the original, it retains the master sound before it deteriorates.
While each note is distinct, the sound is so natural that the instrument itself comes to mind. You can feel the vibration of the strings and leather in the sharpness of the rise, and the realism resides in the peak that draws a beautiful mountain with a single note and the muted vibe that disappears. And, although the music that is created by connecting each sound is extremely beautiful, it is also important that the darkness of the silent part is deep at the same time. The melody shines and the beats and grooves are mellow because the tension of the scene without hiss is drawn out, and it is because it stands out from there.
To give one example, the beginning of “Mystery”. Cymbal work and keyboards create a different space, where the guitar spins a dissonant melody. Even in the conventional version, the performance itself could be enjoyed in detail, but in this work, you can see that the vibrations emitted by the cymbals and keyboard are “resonating”. Each note interacts with each other in the field space, and even swings the drum kit struts and guitar bodies there. “Reality” is the keyword from earlier, but the reality that dwells in this work is at that level. Not only is each sound crystal clear, but unlike studio recordings where the instruments are played and mixed separately, it reproduces all the vibrations that can occur because the instruments live together on stage.
What’s more, it’s not an LP, so there are no scratches, and the whole story is smooth and glossy. As a matter of fact, at the end of “Sun Hymn” (around 9:07), you can hear a momentary noise that is not found on the current CD, but in fact this is also “genuine”. It was caused by operating the keyboard (or guitar) switch on the stage, and was part of the work recorded on both the original master and the early CD (later, during the remastering in 1994) seems to have been removed by ). This work is a press CD that permanently preserves the truth of such a master completely unprocessed.
Sometimes it’s the UK’s first press LP, sometimes it’s the first Japanese CD, sometimes it’s an unknown 8-tra cassette… Maniacs are looking for the highest peak sound of a masterpiece by challenging all kinds of possibilities. This work is also one of the ultimate forms born from such a journey of inquiry. It is the supreme board of the live disc of “Umaguma”.

●半世紀を超えて発掘されたカッティング以前の大元マスター
本作が奇跡とまで言われたのは、「長さ」と「音質」の両面で公式超えを果たしたからに他なりません。『ウマグマ』の１枚目となったライヴ盤は「39分36秒」だったわけですが、本作は同じライヴでありながら「54分２秒」。しかも未知なるアップグレード・サウンドで綴られる世界初のライヴアルバムなのです。
まるでキツネに摘まれたような、夢みたいな話。では、なぜ拡張版が実現したのか、未知のサウンドはどうしてあり得たのか。そのカギとなるのは、新発掘された“FLAT TRANSFER MASTER”でした。海外から独自ルートでもたらされたのが驚きの大元マスターだったのです。
もう少し詳しく申しますと、ミックスダウンとマスタリングが完了し、ある国（“欧州のとある国”とだけ申し上げておきましょう）のプレス用に配布されたマスター。それが半世紀の時を超えて発見されたのです。そこに記録されていたのは、まさにオリジナル・マスターのサウンドそのもの。コレクター界ではレコーディングの音に一歩でも近づこうとやれカッティング精度だ、マト1だと追究されるものですが、今回はその次元にはない。何しろプレスはおろか、カッティングされる以前。つまり「一度も物理的な溝に変換されていない音」が保存されていたのです。
●1969年のフルショウを体験させてくれる完全形サウンドボード
これが最高峰更新となる未知なるサウンドの秘密。しかし、それだけは「完全版」とはならない。“FLAT TRANSFER MASTER”は、あくまでミックスダウンもマスタリングも済んだ完成度100％の音。すなわち、尺も最終オフィシャル作品と同じだからです。では、どうやって拡張が可能になったのか。
そこで２つめのカギとなるのが「ラフミックス」。実のところ、『ウマグマ』のライヴには本編とは異なるラフミックス・テイクが発掘されており、当店でも『RARITIES（Oenone-001A/B）』の一部としてもご紹介した事があります。これは単にミックスが異なるだけでなく、演奏パートの前後も長く記録され、公式作ではカットされた「星空のドライブ（Interstellar Overdrive）」も収録されていたのです。
そして本作は、上記２つのサウンドボードをフル活用したもの。メインとなる４曲「天の支配（Astromony Domine）」「ユージン、斧に気をつけろ（Careful With That Axe, Eugene）」「太陽讃歌（Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun）」「神秘（A Saucerful Of Secrets）」は“FLAT TRANSFER MASTER”の最高峰サウンドで綴り、その合間と「星空のドライブ」をラフミックスで補完。もちろん、補完パートも緻密・厳正なマスタリングによって“FLAT TRANSFER MASTER”に可能な限り近づけ、言われなければ（言われても？）気づかない自然でシームレスなライヴアルバムを実現させているのです。
そうして誕生した本作は「1969年のフルショウ」を体験させてくれる。『ウマグマ』のライヴ・ディスクは「1969年４月27日バーミンガム公演」「５月２日マンチェスター公演」の２種から編集されていますが、実のところ、内実はほぼほぼマンチェスター公演。「神秘」の約３分（本作で言うところの５トラック目の「0:00-3:25」）だけがバーミンガム公演なのです。そして、マンチェスターで演奏されたのは、本作と同じ５曲だけ。つまり、本作は伝統名盤の拡張版であると同時に「マンチェスター公演の完全版サウンドボード（３分半だけ差し替え）」でもあるわけです。
●未体験のサウンドが体現する“本物のウマグマ”
内容を正確にお伝えするため、やや淡泊な口調で書いておりますが、本作の聴き応えは衝撃的でもありました。まず、サウンドが深い。これまでリリースされてきたありとあらゆる公式CDを凌駕しているのです。実のところ、『ウマグマ』は1987年に初CD化された時点で劣化しており、その後の1994年以降のリマスター盤ではデジタル加工で取り繕ってきた。ところが、本作はオリジナルそのままでありつつ、劣化する前のマスター・サウンドを保持しているのです。
１音１音がくっきりとしつつ、鳴りは楽器そのものが目に浮かぶほどナチュラル。立ち上がりの鋭さには弦や皮の振動が感じられ、１音が美しい山を描くピークにも消えゆく消音のヴァイヴにも現実感が宿っている。そして、１音１音が連なって生まれる音楽が極めて美しいわけですが、同時に無音部の闇が深いのも重要。ヒスのない無が静まり返った現場の緊張感を描き出し、そこから浮き立つからこそ、メロディは光沢を放ち、ビートやグルーヴも芳醇なのです。
１つ例を挙げるなら「神秘」の序盤。シンバルワークの連打とキーボードが異空間を生みだし、そこにギターが不協和音のメロディを紡いでいく。従来盤でもその演奏自体は細部まで楽しめましたが、本作はシンバルやキーボードが発する振動が「共振」しているのまで分かる。それぞれのノートが現場空間で作用し合い、そこにあるドラムキットの支柱やギターのボディまで振るわせる。先ほどから「現実感」をキーワードにしておりますが、本作に宿るリアリティはそういうレベル。単に１つひとつの音が鮮明なだけでなく、別に演奏してミックスするスタジオ録音とは違い、楽器同士が同居するステージだからこそ起きうる振動のすべてを再現してくれるのです。
しかも、LP起こしではないからスクラッチもなく、全編が滑らかで艶やか。実のところ、「太陽讃歌」の終盤（9:07辺り）に現行CDにはない「プッ」という瞬間ノイズも聞こえますが、実はこれも「本物」。ステージの現場でキーボード（もしくはギター）の切り替えスイッチを操作した事で発生したものであり、オリジナル・マスターにも初期CDにも記録されていた作品の一部（その後、1994年のリマスタリングの際に除去されたようです）。本作は、そんなマスターの真実を完全無加工で永久保存したプレスCDなのです。
時に英国1stプレスLPであり、時に日本盤初回CDであり、時に知られざる８トラ・カセットであったり……。マニアはありとあらゆる可能性に挑んでは名盤の最高峰サウンドを探しています。本作もまた、そんな探求の旅から生まれた究極形の１つ。『ウマグマ』のライヴ・ディスクの至高盤なのです。
