Turn back time, “2010s”. For the history of Pink Floyd’s sound source, it was a decade in which a number of amazing ultra-high-quality sound boards appeared, and a decade of great excavation where many years of mystery finally appeared. Above all, the appearance of the Victor sound source that recorded Montreux performance on November 21, 1970 with unbelievable super high sound quality, and the treasured sound source that completely recorded the first day of Hakone Aphrodite on August 6, 71, I think both were truly super-class sound sources that could be said once every 10 years. However, when the 2020s are coming soon, the first reel source of high sound quality and large excavation suitable for closing the 2010s will appear!
It is the Santa Monica performance on October 16, 1971. This performance, just 10 days after the legendary Pompeii recording, which played the supreme performance at the Hakone Aphrodite in midsummer and performed “Musical Dedication” by Floyd, was long known as “SANTA MONICA 1971 (Sigma 50)” from this Sigma. The “Audience” sound source that existed was present. However, in late summer of 2019, a reel tape by an unknown “Soundboard” entitled “Santa Monica 1971 soundboard reel to reel” was exhibited on the auction site eBay, and this was unveiled by an unofficial sound source fan. The sound source that has been scrutinized and remastered was released online in November, and it has become a serious problem.
What was released is a remastered version of the three versions of the remastered source that was produced based on the first appearance reel tape (hereinafter referred to as “eBay reel”).

This is the latest work “ SANTA MONICA 1971 (Sigma 237) ” that was put together in a 6-press set (!!) and turned into a sound board!
The first eBay reel remastered version, titled “PA Recorder”, will appear on Disks 1 and 2 by the uploader. As mentioned above, this is a remastered recording of the reel tape titled “Pink Floyd Santa Monica 1971 soundboard reel to reel” that appeared on eBay, but when I actually listened to it, it was directly connected to the table The
It can be seen that this is not a lag-in sound board, but rather a direct recording of the performance sound with a microphone placed in the front or very close to the main PA speaker. I think “What is it, then it ’s audience recording”, and although it isn’t plugged in to the desk, it captures the sound directly from the main speaker at a very close distance, so the resolution is unusually high, There is a clear sound board quality that you can listen to. Certainly, it wasn’t strictly correct that the seller listed it as a sound board (* SBD), but it was probably placed a meter away from the PA speaker. It is an unmistakable fact that this recorded sound can be heard like an SBD, and it is an unmistakable special sound that can be mistaken for SBD.
By the way, the recording was done on a 1/4 ”7” open reel with a monaural program on both channels, and the sound image had serious degradation on the left channel. However, the other right channel has an incredibly powerful (= and nobody has ever known) ultra-high resolution sound, and this remastered version maintains its high sound quality and quality. The original right channel was restored. This sound is already a miracle, and from the beginning of “Careful With That Ax, Eugene”, the rich energy peculiar to reel tape has been struck, and the appearance of the performance dynamically changing has come out with amazing clarity. Although “Fat Old Sun” has some places where hiss and noises run, the transparency and stubbornness of the Sigma 50 board are inconsistent with each other, and you will feel the difference between the actors. The sound quality suddenly changes from 11:27 to 40 because the recording of the eBay reel is divided into “Fat Old Sun (part 1)” and “(part 2)”. Complimented with the same day AUD tape (* also used in Sigma 50). However, other than that, the power of the reel tape is fully demonstrated in the depth of the timbre radiated while dazzling dazzlingly.
“Atom Heart Mother” has a feeling of explosion in the tone of the guitar and the tom of the toms, and the magnificent scale of the song is carried with overwhelming excitement. The purity of the harmony is also incredible, and the entire range of energy is filled with energy that fills the entire range of the guide vocals of Gilmore and Roger. In “The Embryo”, the effect of direct recording of PA microphones is evident in that the SE of the voices of children, as well as the performance sound, comes out at this high resolution. You will rarely hear a sound image that can be felt so close that the transition of acoustic energy that has undergone various transformations in a short time. Although recording is interrupted in just 2 minutes and becomes a disc end, it is captured here by a special tone trajectory worth 20 minutes, and anyone who heard it will be amazed by its superb sound .
[Audience Recorder: Jumping from Sigma 50 to 237]Discs 3 and 4 contain a remastered version of the AUD source from the Low gen cassette entitled “Audence Recorder”. The maternal source used is the same as that used in the previous edition “SANTA MONICA 1971 (Sigma 50)”, but the natural tone is more balanced with respect to the Sigma 50, where the bass range was slightly over-emphasized. The feature is that it is remastered to the sound image. The mid-low range impression is particularly different from the Sigma 50, but the sound has regained its natural core strength, making it easier to hear and not reducing the value of the source. This is the newest source for remastering with a different approach from Sigma 50.
Is the effect first felt after the “Careful With That Ax, Eugene” scream? This is a glimpse of a new scale-up while making the most of the texture of the AUD source, leaving a natural and powerful sound that can’t be ignored. “Fat Old Sun” will feel the difference in the development that the base continues to beat intensely in about 2 minutes from around 7:30 to around 9:41. In this part, Sigma 50 had an impression that the bass boost was too effective and the sound turbidity was intense, but here again, the mellow loudness makes it easy to look down at the entire ensemble. Furthermore, in “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun”, there is a euphoria of reverberation that can only be melted by the AUD source, and you will feel the real thrill of remastering the sound of the slowly drifting sound.
In “Echoes”, you can still hear Gilmore’s singing voice very well, but it ’s attractive that it ’s singing in a simple and straight sound because the low-frequency boost in Sigma 50 is gone. The scene where the bass shows its presence from around 11:16 is not a sound with loudness, but a massive sound with the strength of the core, and the difference between this impression is the aim of both remasters I can feel it. “A Saucerful Of Secrets” also disappeared from the turbidity of the bass, making it easier to grasp the drum hits coming in from just 4:00 and the crossing of the sound of the piano and guitar involved. In particular, the drums have a clear hi-hat tone that can be inserted at equal intervals from 11:33, and there is a difference between the Sigma 50 and the Sigma 50, which had a slightly overtone tone.

それは1971年10月16日のサンタ・モニカ公演。盛夏の箱根アフロディーテで至高の演奏を放ち、フロイドによる” 音楽の奉納 “を行った伝説のポンペイ・レコーディングから僅か10日後のこの公演は、当Sigmaから『SANTA MONICA 1971 (Sigma 50)』として長らく親しまれていた” オーディエンス “音源が存在していました。ところが今年2019年の晩夏、オークションサイトeBayで” Santa Monica 1971 soundboard reel to reel “と題された未知の” サウンドボード “によるリール・テープが出品され非公式音源ファンがこれを獲得、その現物リールを精査リマスターした音源が11月にネット公開され現在大変な事になっているのです。
公開されたのはその初登場リールテープ(※ 以降” eBayリール “とします)を母体にして制作された3バージョンのリマスター・ソースなのですが、これらを並べてみますと…

…となっており、このどれもが驚異的なクオリティを誇っているのでした。そう、これらを全て1音も逃さず
にプレス盤6枚組(!!)で纏め上げ、音盤化したものが本最新作『SANTA MONICA 1971 (Sigma 237)』なのです!!
【PA Recorder : 史上初登場の特級サウンド】
ディスク1と2にはアップローダーによって” PA Recorder “と題された史上初登場のeBayリール・リマスター版が降臨します。前述の通りこれはeBayに出現した” Pink Floyd Santa Monica 1971 soundboard reel to reel” と題されたリールテープの収録音をリマスターしたものですが、実際にその音を聴いてみると卓に直結したプ
ラグ・インのサウンドボードではなく、おそらく正面またはメインPAスピーカーの非常に近い位置に配置したマイクで演奏音を直録りした録音である事が伺えるのです。「なんだ、それならオーディエンス録音じゃないか」と思うのは早計で、卓にプラグ・インこそしていないもののメイン・スピーカーから音を超至近距離で直接キャプチャしているため解像度が異常なほど高く、そこに明瞭な” サウンドボード・クオリティ “が聴いて取れる訳です。確かに出品者がこれをサウンドボード (※ 以降SBD)と記して出品した事は厳密に正しいとは言えませんが、しかしPAスピーカーから恐らく1メートルも離れていないであろう位置に置かれたこの収録音が限りなくSBDの様に聴こえるのは紛れも無い事実で、これをSBDと勘違いするのも無理からぬほどの特級サウンドなのです。
ちなみに収録は両方のチャンネルにモノラル・プログラムを備えた1/4” 7”のオープンリールで行われており、その音像には左チャンネルに深刻な劣化が存在していました。しかしもう一方の右チャネルには信じ難いほどに強力な(＝ そしてこれまで誰も知らなかった)超高解像サウンドが息衝いており、このリマスター版はその高音質・高品質を維持していた右チャンネルを元に復元されています。このサウンドがもう本当にミラクルで、冒頭の「Careful With That Axe, Eugene」からリールテープ特有の豊かなエネルギーが漲り、演奏の表情がダイナミックに移り変わってゆく姿が驚異の鮮明さ飛び出してくるのです。「Fat Old Sun」は所どころでサーッとヒスノイズが走る箇所があるものの、その透明感と骨太な響きはSigma 50盤とは桁違いの格差があり、役者の違いを痛感するでしょう。11:27～40で音質が急に変化するのはeBayリールの収録が「Fat Old Sun (part 1)」「(part 2)」に分割されている為で、欠落しているこの13秒間は同日のAUDテープ(※ Sigma 50でも使用されたもの)で補填しています。しかしそれ以外は眩くゆらめきながら放射される音色の深さにリール・テープならではの威力が存分に発揮されています。
「Atom Heart Mother」はギターの音色の眩さとタムの弾け具合に炸裂感があり、曲想の壮大なスケール感が圧倒的な興奮を伴いながら運ばれてきます。ハーモニーの純度も驚異的な高さで、ギルモアとロジャーのガイドボーカルで進行する区間も音域全体にエネルギーが充満し、むせかえるような音色の陶酔に充ちているのです。「The Embryo」では演奏音は勿論のこと、子供達の声のSEがここまで高い解像度で出ている点にPAマイク直録りの効果がよく現れています。僅かな間に多様な変幻を遂げてゆく音響エネルギーの移り変わりがこれほど間近で実感出来る音像は滅多に耳に出来ないでしょう。またこの日の「Blues」も別格の響きの浮遊感を伴って登場。僅か2分程度で録音が途切れてディスクエンドになるものの、それがここでは20分にも値する特級の音色の軌跡で捉えられており、耳にした誰もがその至高の響きにときめかれる筈です。
【Audience Recorder : Sigma 50から237への跳躍】
ディスク3と4には” Audience Recorder “と題されたLow genカセットによるAUDソースのリマスター・バージョンを収録しています。使われている母体ソースは既発盤『SANTA MONICA 1971 (Sigma 50)』で使われていたものと同一ですが、低音域がやや強調され過ぎだったそのSigma 50盤と比べバランス重視の自然な音像にリマスターされているのが特徴です。特に中～低音域の印象がSigma 50と随分と違っているのですが、サウンドが自然な芯の強さを取り戻した事で演奏が遥かに聴き易くなっており、ソースの価値を下げないようSigma 50とは別のアプローチでリマスターした事が伺える最新ソースとなっています。
その効果が最初に感じられるのは「Careful With That Axe, Eugene」のスクリーム後の展開でしょうか。ここはAUDソースの質感を最大限活かしながら新たにスケールアップを図っている様子が垣間見え、自然でいながら迫力あるサウンドが無視出来ない聴き応えを残しています。「Fat Old Sun」は7:30付近～9:41付近までの約2分間でベースが激しくうなり続ける展開に違いを感じるでしょう。この部分、Sigma 50では低音のブーストが効き過ぎて音の混濁が激しい印象がありましたが、ここでもまろやかなラウドさでアンサンブル全体が俯瞰し易くなっています。更に「Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun」ではAUDソースならではの溶け落ちる様な残響の陶酔があり、ゆっくり漂う音の去来にリマスターの醍醐味が感じられるでしょう。
「Echoes」では相変わらずギルモアの歌声が大変良く聴こえておりますが、Sigma 50にあった低音域のブーストが無くなった事でシンプル且つストレートな音の姿で甦っているのが魅力でしょう。11:16付近からベースが存在感を現すシーンもラウドさを伴った音で出るのではなく芯の強さを持ったマッシヴな音として出ており、この印象の違いに双方のリマスターの狙いが感じられる筈です。「A Saucerful Of Secrets」も低音の混濁感が無くなった事で4:00ジャストから突入してくるドラムの乱打や、これに絡むピアノとギターが放つ響きの交差の姿が掴み易くなりました。特にドラムは11:33から等間隔で入れられるハイハットの音色も明瞭感が挙がり、やや霞掛かった音色でこれが出ていたSigma 50とは雲泥の差があります。
【2 Recorders Stereo Matrix : そして次世代の特級サウンドへ】
SBD同等のクオリティを誇るeBayリールのディスク1と2、そして従来のサウンドが見直されたAUDソースのディスク3と4。これをマトリクスし、更にステレオ化したものが本タイトル最大の聴きどころであるこのディスク5と6です。細かい事を言えばPAレコーダー(＝ eBayリールの右チャンネル)が勿論チャンネル右側、そしてセンターのすぐ左にも15％配置され、ドラムが中央に、AUD録音はおよそ65％の割合で全体をバックアップしているのですが、その響きのダイナミックさと音像の奥行きと立体感・音域の拡大はまさに桁違いの聴き応え!! 間もなく訪れる2020年から先の10年はこのマトリクス・サウンドがこの日の定番となること確実の、真に驚異的な71年サンタモニカ・ソースとなっているのです!!
ディスク冒頭から出る音像の膨らみと透明度の高さ・そして演奏音の近さとダイナミックさには、思わず身を乗り出さずにいられない筈。耳にした100人中100人が圧倒されるレベルで濃密な鮮明音が洪水の様に溢れ出し、SBD級の音とAUDそれぞれの良い部分がパーフェクトに補強し合ったサウンドに驚嘆されるに違いありません。「Fat Old Sun」も音の芯がズンと太くなり音域の拡大感が圧倒的。曲想のまろやかさを最大限発揮しながらもサウンドの輪郭はクッキリと明瞭そのもので、全ての音が細部に至るまで前に出たその音密度の濃さに仰天すると思います。尚、eBayリールがそうなっているためディスク1同様にここでも11:50～12:03の13秒間はAUDサウンドが登場しますが、しかしこれもその音像差にどれだけこのマトリクスの威力があるかが伺えるでしょう。凡庸な録音で聴くと単調に聴こえがちな「Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun」もここでは立体的でグラマラスな音の配列が実感出来ますし、「Atom Heart Mother」はどの音もエネルギッシュな緊張感を発揮しながら互いに溶け込み、どの小節も明瞭で眩い推進力に満ちています。スライド・ギターが縦横無尽に炸裂しまくる3:31～5:11もその音色の艶と響きの拡散が圧倒的で、格別の聴き応えと音の余韻を誇っています。
「Cymbaline」はギルモアの歌声がグッと前に出て更に聴き応えが増していますが、何より音群移動装置による効果を実感出来る点が特記されるでしょう。これが判り易いのが足音のシーンで、透明で拡がりのある音像の中で左から右、右から左へとハイヒールが移動する様子がステレオ効果で現れ、当日の会場に木霊していた生々しい音が甦っています。「Blues」はギター単旋律の音艶と鮮明度がもはや驚異的ですが、残念ながらここでeBayソースの収録限界点を迎える為にこの至福の音色は2:06付近で終わり、その先は終曲までリマスターされたAUD録音にシフトしています。ただ興味深いのはこのAUD録音パートもマトリクス用に調整し直された音(※ 或いはeBayリールから別途トランスファーし直された音かもしれない)で出てくる事でしょう。ディスク2とは音の印象が少し
