Half a century ago, PINK FLOYD’s first visit to Japan told the island nations of the Far East about the dawn of progressive rock. One that updates the highest peak in the history of the legendary Osaka tape is decided to be permanently preserved.
Of course, what is recorded in this work is the performance of “August 9, 1971: Osaka Festival Hall”. It is the symbolic audience recording. The treasure of Japanese Western music history, where the existence of shows and recordings is too legendary. Even in our shop, the existing groups such as “OSAKA 1971: A NEW TAPE TRANSFER” and “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” have been widely and deeply loved. If you’ve noticed this article, you’ve probably mentioned it more than once in some title. And it is destined that the too symbolic record is pursued for possibility and the upgrade is repeated. It is the same as “Atom Heart Mother” and “Insanity” being pursued in high-quality media and national editions. “Osaka 71” has been upgraded many times in search of the best sound, but this work is the latest and highest peak update version. It is the 50th anniversary edition that aimed at the ultimate by taking all possible measures in 2021.
The effect is enormous. Even when “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” was released, the clear and transparent feeling, the drastically reduced hiss, and the powerful direct feeling of the playing sound became a big topic, but this work keeps its beauty and further transfers The accuracy of is improved. All the notes in the whole story are different, but if it’s easy to understand, is it a stereo feeling? For example, “Atom Heart Mother”. Even in the best “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” in the past, the left channel was off, and the balance was biased to the right. However, there is no such instability in this transfer. Even with “Atom Heart Mother”, the left channel has been picked up sufficiently, and it reproduces the legendary scene in a well-balanced and accurate manner. Of course, there’s no swanky sound pressure earning or flashy equalizing (if you did it, the flat transfer would be ruined). Instead, it improves pitch and stability. You might think, “It’s the usual procedure,” but it’s never been accurate. It thoroughly corrects the sound twist (wow and flutter) that was destined until now. If you have “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” at hand, please play it. You can see that the acoustic guitar in the opening “Green Is The Color” intro sounds beautifully, while the notes are slightly undulating. In this 50th anniversary edition, this slight shaking is stable.
Of course, we didn’t just fix the start and cheat. On the contrary, if you take the final stage as an example, is it better to use the latter half of “Mystery” in the 15th minute or later? The mysterious keyboard wraps the festival hall in a majestic mood, but the high-pitched long notes are so easy to understand that the shaking is cruel. The previous version was swaying finely and constantly, but this work is a bit sick. This effect changes the nuances of the performance, and the sound even changes the scene you draw. Visually metaphorically, what emerges from the “mystery” of the conventional edition is the monochrome world of ink painting and recording film. On the other hand, this work is full color. It is also a majestic sound world where the gold-shining pipe organ shines in the church.
Every time I discovered a new master and transferred a new technology, I was impressed with “Is Osaka in 1971 so wonderful?” The quest has reached a point where it has been studied for 50 years. そんな本作に記録されているのは、もちろん「1971年８月９日：大阪フェスティバルホール」公演。その象徴オーディエンス録音です。もはやショウも録音の存在も伝説すぎる日本洋楽史の至宝。当店でも『OSAKA 1971: A NEW TAPE TRANSFER』『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』といった既発群が広く、深く愛されてきました。本稿に目を留められた方なら、恐らく何らかのタイトルで一度ならず触れられた事があるでしょう。そして、あまりにも象徴的な記録は可能性を追求され、アップグレードを繰り返されるのが宿命。『原子心母』や『狂気』が高音質メディアや各国盤まで追究されるのと同じ事です。「大阪71」も頂点のサウンドを求めて何度もアップグレードが繰り返されてきましたが、本作はその最新・最高峰更新版。2021年に可能なありとあらゆる手段を講じて究極を目指した50周年盤なのです。
【最高峰2ndジェネDATマスターを再度の精密トランスファー】
もちろん、本作は単なる既発のリマスター盤ではありません。まず素材からして「極み」を追究。今日まで「ベスト」として君臨してきた『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』と同じ2ndジェネのDATマスターを使用しました。もちろん、『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』の再利用ではありません。その元となるDATマスターに遡って再度フラット・トランスファー。2021年のハイエンド機材で精密・丁寧に起こし直しました。
その効果は絶大。『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』がリリースされた際にもクリアに澄み切った透明感と激減したヒス、さらに演奏音の力強いダイレクト感が大きな話題となりましたが、本作はその美点もそのままに、さらにトランスファーの精度がアップしているのです。もう全編すべてのノートが異なるのですが、分かりやすいところですとステレオ感でしょうか。例えば、「原子心母」。従来ベストの『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』でも左チャンネルがオフ気味になっており、右に偏ったバランスになっていました。しかし、今回のトランスファーではこうした不安定な箇所がない。「原子心母」にしても左チャンネルが手応え十分に拾い出されており、伝説の現場をバランス良く、正確に再現してくれるのです。

2ndジェネDATが保存していたサウンドを余すことなく復刻した後は、細心マスタリングでの磨き込み行程です。もちろん、無粋な音圧稼ぎや派手なイコライジングは一切なし（もしやったらせっかくのフラット・トランスファーが台無しです）。そうではなく、ピッチや安定感を向上させています。「いつもの手順じゃないか」と思われるかも知れませんが、その精度がかつて無い。これまで宿命であった音ヨレ（ワウフラッター）を徹底的に補正しているのです。もし、お手元に『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』があるようでしたら、ぜひ再生してみてください。冒頭「Green Is The Colour」イントロのアコギが美しく鳴りつつ、そのノートは微妙に寄れて波打っているのがお分かりになるでしょう。今回の50周年盤は、この僅かな揺れがビシッと安定しているのです。
もちろん、スタートだけ直して誤魔化しているわけではありません。逆に終盤を例に取るなら「神秘」の後半15分台以降が良いでしょうか。神秘的なキーボードが荘厳なムードでフェスティバルホールを包むわけですが、高音のロングノートは揺れが残酷なほど分かりやすい。従来盤は細かく絶え間なく揺れ続けていましたが、本作はビシッとしているのです。この効果は演奏のニュアンス、音は描く光景さえも変えてしまう。視覚的に喩えますと、従来盤の「神秘」から浮かぶのは水墨画や記録フィルムのようなモノクロの世界。それに対して、本作はフルカラー。それも教会でゴールドに輝くパイプオルガンが艶やかに降り注ぐような荘厳な音世界なのです。
