2007年リリース時、1st Genを使用した事でこれ以上は無いと思われていたソースが、予想外のところから発掘されたリール・テープで覆ります!!

1972年12月10日、フランス・リヨン。御存知の通りこの日は世界初演から約11ヶ月間に渡ってテスト演奏をし続けてきた”試作版の「THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON」”が最終演奏となった公演日であり、またこの公演をもって72年に組まれていたライブ活動が全て終了した節目の日でもありました。72年のフロイドにとってはそれこそ”その年の総決算”とも言える重要な一日であった訳ですが、音源史的に遡るとこの日の録音は一昔前までテープトレーダー間にさほど音質の良いものが流通していなかった事もあり、正当な評価が下し難い状況が続いていたという歴史があります。

状況が一変したのは2007年初頭、それまで流通していた凡庸なB級録音を一瞬で吹き飛ばす1st Gen音源が突如ネット公開され、これを機に注目度が一気に跳ね上がりました。この時の1st Gen音源を世界最速でプレス音盤化したものが2007年4月リリースの『END & AIM: LYON 1972 (Sirene-244)』だった訳ですが、このタイトルの登場によって72年を締め括るこのリヨン公演がようやく正当な評価を得たと言っても過言では無かったでしょう。ただこの2007年時のソースは、第二部となるショウ後半は曲間のサウンドチェック部も含めノーカット収録しており問題が無かったものの、肝心カナメとなる第一部・ショウ前半「THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON / 試作版」の最終演奏については「Us And Them」の3:57付近でマスターに起因するノイズ発生があったり、「Any Colour You Like」の3:17、3:32付近ではテープ・フリップの様にキュルッと音が数秒間途切れる不快なシーンが存在するなど、1st Genながらも品質的にはパーフェクトとは言い難い側面を持っていました。

その状況に一石を投じる報せが入ったのは今年2019年の春先。とあるファンが海外のネットオークション・サイトで1本の古いスコッチの7インチリール・テープを発見。そのリールの中身が書かれたインフォにはA面にスペンサー・デイヴィス・グループのテレビ音源、そしてB面にはピンク・フロイドの72年リヨン公演とあったのです。海外のフロイドファンは寄付を募りリールをオークションで落札。再生してみると、2007年公開の1st Genテープと同一のソースながらも明らかにそれを上回るマスター・レベルの音質で収録されており、しかも驚くべき事にそこには2007年ソースに存在していた「Any Colour You Like」の途中で音が切れる2箇所のカットポイントが無く(!!!)、更には冒頭「Speak To Me」も約30秒ほど手前から収録された最長版(!!!!!)でもあったのです!

まさに聴けば聴くほどサウンドのアッパー感がそこかしこで感じられる大発掘のリール・テープだった訳ですが、ネット上に公開されたリールの原音には「Breathe (Reprise)」や「Us And Them」の途中で僅かに音が乱れるという2007年版ソースには無かった独自の横顔が確認出来るなど、どういった経路でこのリールに音が残されたのか聴き手に想像を掻き立ててくるミステリアスさが備わっている点もまた魅力でした。ただそうした難アリの箇所はイコライジング調整や2007年版ソースのデジタル・パッチで充分補えるものでしたから、これをマスターにして補完するところをパーフェクト・トリートメントすれば音質過去最高にして最長収録、しかも公開音源を超えるクオリティを持った72年リヨン音源が誕生する筈。…そう、これを世界最速でプレス盤2枚組で音盤化したものがこのSigma最新作、あの「THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON / 試作版」の最終演奏も史上初めて音抜けの無い完全な姿で甦る、アッパー感満点の72年リヨンなのです!!

明らかな上位音質による驚きの更新感は、ディスク冒頭からシーン最長録音という嬉しいトピックで幕を開けます。その「Speak To Me」は2007年版ソース(＝Sirene-244)より約30秒も手前から収録が始まっており、動悸音の立ち上がりと周囲のざわめきに生々しい当日ドキュメンタリーの格差を感じられるのです。やがて「Breathe」が始まるとリール・テープならではのキレの良いタフな演奏音とレンジの拡がり、また透明感向上にも目を見張るものがあり、その眩しいサウンド・コントラストが既にSirene-244を凌駕している事を実感させてくれるでしょう。そしてこの日一番とも言える聴きどころが何と言っても「On The Run」です。御存知の通り、他日の演奏ではまず聴けないこのドライヴ感満点の長尺なジャム合戦も過去最強の高解像マッシヴ・サウンドで展開するのですからたまりませんし、試作版の最終演奏で見せたこの曲の可能性がこれほど良い状態で聴ける事に必ずや深い感銘を受ける筈です。「Time」も低域で豊かなハーモニーを創出している様子が間近な明瞭音で迫り、2:23～28付近で突然起こるリック側のマイク不調(※数秒間だけ音が遠くなる)もますます生々しいドキュメンタリー音像で愉しみ戴けます。

「Breathe(Reprise)」は00:26～34付近でリール・テープの劣化による音質不良シーンがあったのですが、これはSirene-244盤の同箇所でパーフェクト補填し、聴感上の違和感を完全解決しています。また「Us And Them」も原音はテープの劣化によって音が荒れるシーンが散発していましたが、これもSigma専属のエンジニアによる匠の技術で完全なる修復に成功しました(※恐らくこうメモしなければ、これが原音の姿と思われそうなほど自然な仕上がりです)。そして9分を上回る最長演奏が愉しめる「Any Colour You Like」では驚きの瞬間が待ち受けています。そう、このリール音源には2007年版ソース(＝Sirene-244)にあった2箇所のブツ切れシーンが存在せず、演奏音が全く途切れずに残されているのです。序盤から中盤に掛けて至近距離で朗々と奏で続けているロマンチックなギターの調べもこれまでより次元の高い知の興奮へ誘ってくれますし、その抑揚感に包まれながら「Eclipse」が終演した時、聴き手はこの72年最終公演の第一部を初めてパーフェクトに聴き終えたという深い充足感を得るに違いありません。それはまさに身を焦がされるほどの音楽的な恍惚感が何度も待ち受けるダークサイド・セットであり、どの曲もこれまでSirene-244で接してきたものとは桁違いに手応えあるものとなっていますので、是非活目してお聴き戴きたいと思います。

第2部もSirene-244を凌駕する素晴らしいリール・サウンドで満たされます。トラック(1)のチューニング・シーンで既に分かりますが、Sirene-244では直接過ぎて音が若干割れていた音像が聴き易い自然なサウンドとなっており、これまで以上に細かいチェック音までが聴こえるのです。「One Of These Days」で体験出来る屈強なサウンドも、耳にする誰もが未知の興奮で身を震わせること確実でしょう。低音域が深いだけでなく、その低音の動きの中で何が起こっているのかが更によく掴める点もこの2019年版リール・ソースの大きなトピックとなっており、本演奏の音楽的理解力も飛躍的に高めてくれるのです。「Careful with that Axe, Eugene」はサウンドの拡がりと伸びを最高値で実感出来るシーンです。この時期ならではのロジャーによる詩の朗読の様なシーンも、そのアジテーションの後ろで鳴り響く不気味な音とのコラージュが過去最高のインパクトある音像で飛び出し、彼らがこの夜に展開させた12分超えのサウンド・ドラマがますますリアルな衝撃となって私達を飲み込んできます。終演後に再び入るチューニング・シーンも各楽器の音色に艶と厚みが感じられますし、「Echoes」の序盤導入部ではそうした各楽器が放つ音の質感がSirene-244を更新する聴き易さで登場、音割れとノイズが酷かった後半部分もマスターが吸い込んでいた生音のリアルさはそのままに、より聴き易いアッパー・サウンドで聴き通せるのです。

確かに、この2019年版リール・ソースが一体どういった経緯で録音されて現在に残っていたのか、その出自の経緯も正確なジェネレーションも現時点では判りません。恐らくこれがマスターでは無いと思われますが、それに近いリール・トゥ・リールによるマスター・クローンである可能性は考えられますし、1st Genだったとしてもそれぞれ別の日時・グレードの違う別のテープ、そして別の人物に宛ててその都度マスターからコピーされた”条件違いの第一世代”とも考えられるでしょう。いずれにせよ2007年版ソースよりも明確に音質が良く・長尺であるというアドヴァンテージは聴き手に桁違いの鋭いヴィジョンを焼き付けてくれますし、研究素材としてもこれまで以上に深い知見と解答を与えてくれる72年最終公演となっています。伝えられるべき情報が欠落せず、予想以上のクオリティで届けられる72年最後の音と知の熱放射を今週末、是非御体験下さい!!!
