バンドの最重要メンバーであるRoger Waters脱退後の最初のアルバム、『A Momentary Lapse Of Reason』のリリースとともに行われた「A Momentary Lapse Of Reason – World Tour」ツアーから、非常に貴重な音源を収録したタイトルがリリースされた。
この世界ツアーは、Watersの不在、そして歴史が証明しているように、リリースされたばかりの新作『A Momentary Lapse Of Reason』が、旧来のファンから言わせると「稀代の凡作」という、いくつかのネガティブな要素を伴っていた。しかしながら、「Pink Floyd」という巨大なブランド力、そして何よりも1981年のLondon公演以来の久々のコンサートということで、往年のヒット曲をライブで堪能できるという抗し難い魅力を前に、先のネガティブの要素は瑣末な事柄となった。
その結果、このツアーはファンの圧倒的な支持を受け、1987年9月9日のOttawa公演を皮切りに1988年8月23日のNew York公演までのロングランとなったのである。
この世界ツアーからは多数の海賊盤がリリースされているが、プレミアとなった1987年9月9日のOttawa公演を収録した『World Tour（Screaming Oiseau Records PF 9987）』は、当時ベストセラーになっている。「On The Run」「Wish You Were Here」の2曲が収録時間の関係から漏れてしまったものの、世界ツアー序盤の数公演でのみ演奏された「Echoes」を収録したという点で、他の海賊盤以上の付加価値も持っていた。
さて、今回リリースされたタイトルだが、まず世界ツアー開始から8公演目に当たる、Toronto公演を収録した『Echoes From Toronto』を紹介してみたい。当公演は、3枚組仕様の海賊盤『A New Machine (Rock Solid Records)』としてリリースされたことがある。今回のリリースでは、『A New Machine』に使用された音源とは異なる、多くの歴史的な音源を残した日本人テーパーが現地で録音した新音源が使用されている。アウェイの地ということもあり、ベストな機材を持ち込むことはできなかったと思うが、非常に良好な音源だと思う。
前述の通り、本公演もツアー序盤ということもあり、オープニングに「Echoes」が演奏されている。冗長な部分が若干カットされているが、全盛期のアレンジに忠実に演奏される。ただし、歌詞を失念したかマイクの不調か、Gilmourのボーカルが数ヶ所で聞こえなくなるのは少々残念だ。その他の過去のヒット曲も、ほぼ原曲通りに演奏される中で、「Another Brick In The Wall Part 2」のみ、大胆なアレンジで演奏される。なお「Money」は、間奏にフリージャムを挟んだ長大なアレンジが施された1988年の演奏と比較すると、この演奏は原曲に近く、非常に好感が持てる。全体の印象として、サポートメンバーの加入により、彼らのウィークポイントだったリズム面が強化された印象を強く受ける録音である。
