【アールズ・コートの真実を残したBBCのFM放送】
その「真実」を記録したサウンドボードとは、1994年当時に放送されたラジオ放送。このショウは名門BBCでもテレビとラジオのサイマル放送が行われており、本作はそのうちDJも時代感満点な“BBC RADIO 1”によるFMステレオ放送（当時のTV放送はモノラルでした）なのです。もちろん、当時から数々のエアチェック・マスターが知られてきましたが、本作はその中でも最高峰となるマスター。当店では、これまでも海外のFLOYD研究家から監修を受けた極上タイトルをいくつもご紹介してきましたが、本作はその最新弾。幾多のマスターを比較し、“これぞベスト”となったマスターを研究家自身の手でリマスターしたライヴアルバムなのです。
そのサウンドは鉄壁のオフィシャル級でありながら、どこまでもナチュラル。実際にオフィシャル作品『P.U.L.S.E』が存在するわけですが、複数公演から編集されたCD版は元より、本作と同じ“10月20日”で編まれたDVD版でもサウンドはオーバーダブでゴージャスに飾られ、ミックスも立体演出が強調されていました。それに対し、本作はまさに当時そのまま。ショウから間を開けずに放送されただけに録りっぱなし感が生々しく、鳴りもバンド感がムキ出し。何よりもオーバーダブがまったくなく、後から熟考したのとは異なるリアルタイムだからこそバランスとミックスがライヴ感・時代感を高めてくれるのです。
もちろん、その結果ショボいサウンドになったのでは意味がないのですが、本作にその心配はない。何しろ、イギリスが誇る超大物バンドの大成功ツアーだけに、放送版のミックスも収録もBBCの威信が賭けられ、1994年当時のあらゆる音楽放送でもトップクラス。さらに研究家による仕上げもPINK FLOYDを知り尽くした深い知識と理解に裏打ちされ、楽曲・歴史・意義・個性・旨みの総て熟知しているからこそのセンスが絶品。放送そのものも十分にオフィシャル級ではありましたが、本作から漂う“本物感”は気品・威厳まで湛えるレベルなのです。

【本生版P.U.L.S.Eとなるライヴアルバム】
そんな“本物感”はサウンドだけに止まらない。前述したように、CD版『P.U.L.S.E』はあくまでも編集作品。アールズ・コートからも複数公演が使用され、１曲内でも組み合わせられていました、他にもローマやモデナ、ハノーファーといった他国公演も混じっていました。それに対し、本作は１回こっきりの通しライヴ。クオリティ面ではオフィシャル作品に匹敵しながらも、手の加えられていない本当の生演奏が全編を貫くのです。
もちろん、映像版『P.U.L.S.E』と比べても現場そのもののミックスは圧倒的でオーバーダブもナシ。ラジオ放送だけに曲間のわずかな省略や重ねられたDJもありはしますが、それも1994年のムードが吹き出しますし、肝心の演奏がまさに生。歴代の大代表曲を描く第一部（ディスク１）も、全世界で８公演だけだった『狂気』完全再現の第二部（ディスク２）も一期一会の輝きに満ち、「本生版のP.U.L.S.E」と呼ぶしかない。まさにアールズ・コートの現場ＰＡサウンドがそのままスピーカーから流れ出るようなライヴアルバムなのです。

このアールズ・コート14公演を最後に“THE DIVISION BELL TOUR”は終了。その後、1996年や2005年など、限定的なステージもいくつかありましたが、二度と巨大なフルショウを行うことなくPINK FLOYDは永遠の眠りに就きました。そんな彼らの最後の輝きを“本物感”たっぷりに体験できる超・極上のステレオサウンドボード・アルバムです。それこそ『対』や『P.U.L.S.E』と同価値とも言える文化遺産級の大名盤。永久保存プレス２CDでいつまでもお楽しみください。
