“January 20, 1972 Brighton Performance” is included in this work. This is the best audience recording recorded on the first day of “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON Tour 1972-1973”. This show is no longer a legend in Floyd history. The masterpiece “Insanity” of the century is also famous for being raised on stage. The tour started when the outline was finalized at the end of 1971, and it grew into a completed form by repeating performances and kneading every day for about a year. The Brighton performance of this work is the first day. In the future, it was a moment when a song called the masterpiece of rock was first shown in public (although it was a prototype).
This alone is historic, but the day didn’t end there. A trouble occurred in the equipment when “money” was approached, and the performance of “madness” was interrupted. It was a masterpiece of the Sigma label “BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972”. At our shop, we have been pursuing the best masters of each era, such as the gift board of the 1st Gene, but “BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972” has a different dimension. The upgrade spanned both length and sound. In particular, the time from the occurrence of equipment trouble with “money” to the start of “atom heart mother” was recorded for a long time, and the passage of time including tuning was felt more realistically.
And more than that is the sound that goes through the whole story. From ancient times, it was famous for its powerful core closeness and delicate details, but the beauty of “BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972” was even more vivid, and even the silent part was deeper. The lack of hiss that you couldn’t feel even if you listened with headphones filled the depth of jet black, and each sound that emerged there clearly emerged to the outline, and the extending sound was shining brightly and glossy. .. All songs and notes were reborn, but what I would like to mention is the trouble scene with “money”. A hum noise is generated from the middle of the previous “The Mortality Sequence”, and its wavelength gradually increases and is unavoidably interrupted by “money”. The eerie rise of noise and the way the sounds of each instrument are scattered are super-realistic as if they were done in front of you. Moreover, on this day, no one knows the original appearance of the song. It is not clear to the audience whether the loud noise is part of the music or trouble because of the performance that makes full use of the heartbeat and the SE of the register. Even if “money” is interrupted, the cheers rise while looking suspicious, and the “atom heart mother” that starts as if it had been planned from the beginning … The feeling of the scene is drawn with a strange reality.
I was just talking about troubles, but the other parts are unique to the premiere. “Breath of Life” with unstable lyrics and melody, “The Travel Sequence” with instrumental jam, “Time” without alarm SE, “Breeze (Reprise)” with no lyrics yet, Minor The original appearance of the daimyo board is interesting, such as “The Mortality Sequence” where the Bible reading SE is played against the background of the tonal organ. Then, after closing the first part with “Atom Heart Mother”, we entered the second part of the regular concert format where we performed classics. Here, too, many famous performances in history are drawn with the highest peak of beautiful sound.

Recently, we have introduced a brush-up version of traditional recording, and this work was also attempted to be remastered as part of that project. If you are familiar with the various works so far, I think that it will come to you, but I have done mastering with fine details and extreme precision, but this work is “It’s like a different thing!” did not. The finish at the time of “BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972” was so perfect that it could hardly be changed. Physically and acoustically speaking, it has improved by mastering work, but from the auditory point of view, it may only be felt as “Is the sound pressure more stable in total?” Of course, it’s not impossible to make it flashy, but I don’t want to make the most important sound source dirty. We focused on improving the accuracy and tried to preserve it permanently.

そんな本作に収められているのは「1972年１月20日ブライトン公演」。“DARK SIDE OF THE MOON Tour 1972-1973”の初日で記録された極上オーディエンス録音です。このショウは、もはやフロイド史の伝説ですらある。世紀の名盤『狂気』は、ステージ現場で育てられた事でも有名。1971年末に概要が固まったところでツアーが開始、約１年に渡って毎日演奏と練り上げを繰り返されながら完成形へと成長していきました。本作のブライトン公演は、その第一日目。将来、ロックの最高傑作とまで呼ばれる楽曲が（プロトタイプながら）初めて人前で披露された刹那だったのです。
これだけでも歴史的ですが、この日はそれだけで終わらなかった。「マネー」に差し掛かったところで機材にトラブルが発生し、そこで「狂気」の演奏は中断。結局は完全演奏にはならなかった（ちなみに初の完全演奏は翌日のポーツマス公演）のですが、その代わりに何事もなかったかのように予定外「原子心母」を演奏。ライヴバンドとしての実力と機転が露わになった激レア演奏ともなったのです。

そんな歴史的なショウが伝説となり得た最大の要因は、オーディエンスの名録音が残された事でもありました。ショウ内容もさることながらサウンド・クオリティが素晴らしく、古くから名作と呼ばれる既発が幾つも誕生。オフィシャル名盤と同様、時代の流れに沿ってアップグレードも繰り返されてきたのです。そして、現在まで最高峰として君臨するマスターが登場したのは2016年。Sigmaレーベルの名作『BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972』でした。当店では、それまでも1stジェネのギフト盤など、各時代で最高のマスターを追求してきましたが、『BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972』は次元が違いました。そのアップグレードぶりは、長さとサウンドの両面に及んだ。特に「マネー」 での機器トラブル発生から「原子心母」開始までの時間が長く記録され、チューニングを含めた当時の時間経過がよりリアルに感じられたのです。
そして、それ以上なのが全編を貫くサウンド。古くから力強い芯の間近感や細やかなディテールが有名だったわけですが、『BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972』はその美点が更に鮮やかで、その上で無音部までもが段違いに深かった。ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませても感じ取れないようなヒスの少なさは漆黒の深みを湛え、そこに浮かび上がる１音１音は輪郭までクッキリと浮き立ち、伸びる鳴りは照りと艶に輝いていたのです。全曲・全ノートが生まれ変わっていたのですが、やはり特筆したいのは「マネー」でのトラブル・シーン。１つ前の「The Mortality Sequence（虚空のスキャットの原形）」の途中からハム・ノイズが発生し、その波長が徐々に高まって「マネー」でやむなく中断してしまう。その不気味なノイズの高まりや各楽器の音の散り方もまるで目の前で行われているように超リアル。しかも、この日は誰もが楽曲本来の姿を知らない初演。心臓の鼓動やレジスターのSEまで駆使されたパフォーマンスだけに、観客にとってはけたたましいノイズも音楽の一部なのかトラブルなのか判然としない。「マネー」が中断されても怪訝な様子ながら喝采が沸き上がり、まるで最初から予定されていたかのように始まる「原子心母」……その現場感が異様なリアリティで描かれるのです。
思わずトラブルの話ばかりになってしまいましたが、他のパートも初演ならでは。歌詞も旋律も不安定な「生命の息吹き」、インストジャム的な「The Travel Sequence（走り回っての原形）」、アラームのＳＥがない「タイム」、まだ歌詞がない「ブリーズ（リプライズ）」、マイナー調のオルガンをバックに，聖書の朗読SEが流される「The Mortality Sequence」などなど、大名盤の原初の姿が興味深い。そして「原子心母」で第一部を締めると、クラシックスを披露する通常コンサート形式の第二部へ突入。ここでも歴史に名高い名演の数々が最高峰の美音で描かれていくのです。

【これ以上は望めない究極サウンドを永久保存】
やたら余談が長くなってしまいましたが、『BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972』とはそこまで画期的な伝統録音の最高峰マスターでした。そして、その素晴らしさ故に発表から間もなく完売・廃盤。長らく入手不可の状況が続いていました。本作は、その伝説的マスターを再度永久保存したプレス２CDなのです。
実のところ「BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972と完全に同じ？」というと、そうではありません。最近、当店では伝統録音のブラッシュアップ盤をご紹介しており、本作もそのプロジェクトの一環としてリマスターが試みられました。これまでの諸作をご存知の方ならピンと来ると思いますが、微に入り細まで穿って精度を極めたマスタリングを施して来たのですが、本作に関しては「まるで別物！」とはなりませんでした。『BRIGHTON JANUARY 1972』時点での仕上がりがあまりにも完璧であり、ほとんど変えられなかった。物理的・音響学的に言えばマスタリング作業で向上しているのですが、聴覚上は「トータルで音圧の安定感が増したかな？」くらいにしか感じられないかも知れません。もちろん、ムリヤリ派手に仕上げる事も不可能ではないのですが、最重要音源を汚すマネはしたくない。あくまで精度アップにこだわって永久保存に臨んだのです。
