この時期のライブ音源として重要視されるのは公式ライブ盤『p.u.l.s.e』ですが、映像版は94年10月20日・ロンドンのアールズ・コート公演を収録しているのに対し、音声だけのアルバム版はヨーロッパとイギリス各地で行った94年の複数公演から良い部分をピックアップした内容でしたから、アルバム版は或る意味” 編集されたベストライブ “でもありました。勿論それは今も色褪せない素晴らしいライブ・アルバムですが、でも純粋にその日の演奏だけで構成されている訳ではありませんから、若干の違和感が残るのもまた確かです。全てがその日のオリジナル演奏で聴けるものはやはり非公式音源しかありませんが、その代表タイトルは何と言っても” 対 “ツアーで唯一のSBD流出音源を公式超えの極上クオリティでプレスした『DEFINITIVE TORINO 1994 (Sigma 119)』が挙げられるでしょう。でも94年を代表する音源は何もこの金字塔的なSBDタイトルだけではなく、実況録音の王道たるAUD録音にこそ多く眠っているのもまた確かです。しかしこの時期のライブは音楽的な完成度や演奏の円熟味がすこぶる高いにも係わらずCDRタイトルが殆どで、それが一因となってなのかファンもこの時期の音源は敬遠しがちな側面を持っていました。しかしその中には『OPTICAL ASTRONOMY (LEM 017)』や『BELL ENDS AT COURT (Amity 078)』等、94年でしか為し得なかった屈指の名演が聴ける音質極上盤も存在していますから、それを聴かずにやり過ごしてしまうのは勿体無い事と言わざるを得ません。しかしその一方で『狂気』完全再現のレアセットを収録した94年タイトルとなりますと、R盤のAUD録音でもさほど多くリリースされていないのが現状です。

そこで今週末、これに一石を投じるとてもつない94年のAUD録音がプレス盤で堂々登場するのです。 それが94年9月17日・イタリアはモデナでの公演を完全収録したこの最新作なのですが、実はこの音源もかつてはSireneレーベルから『DARK MOON ARISE (Sirene-112)』というタイトルで2006年に出ていた2枚組のCDRでした。リリース時はライブ活動最末期の94年フロイドを生々しく伝える優秀盤として高く評価されたのですが、ただ唯一の欠点として低音域の入力が全体的にややラウド過ぎた為、曲によっては音が濁っていたり、ディスク1枚聴くと聴き疲れするという音質上の難点が生じていたのです。この為にR盤に甘んじていた訳ですが、ただその点以外は94年音源の中でも突出して優れたAUD録音でしたから、これをそのまま放置するのはフロイド音源史上大きな損失となります。そこで今回、当時の音源提供者本人が改めてその音質を根本から見直し、2016年の最新機材とソフトで音質の諸問題に正面から取り組んだのです。詳細は専門用語の羅列になりますので省きますが、大まかに言えばマスターボリュームを40%ほど下げて過剰な低音を落とし、高音域を慎重に引き上げる処理を施した訳です。その結果、ラウド過ぎたサウンドが硬質でタフな姿に変化してバランス良く引き締まり、原音本来のポテンシャルが理想の姿で現れる飛躍的な音質改善効果が実現したのです!既発盤でも際立っていたドラムとベースの鳴り方はますます均整が取れ、至近距離サウンドなのに聴き疲れしない極上透明な音像にも驚嘆間違いなしでしょう。まさにこれこそプレス盤に相応しい音像です!

またこのモデナ公演を特徴付けているのは、この日演奏された「Time」と「Money」が公式盤『p.u.l.s.e』に収録されている点でしょう。「Time」はイントロのみが『p.u.l.s.e』に採用されましたが、でも曲全体を通して聴くと何故イントロしか採用されなかったのか不思議に思われる方が殆どではないでしょうか(※ 御承知の通り『p.u.l.s.e』で聴ける同曲の大半は9月20日ローマ公演で、飛行機が爆発する所とエンディングが10月20日のアールズ・コートとなっています)。一方「Money」は丸ごと『p.u.l.s.e』に採用されたオリジナル演奏となっており、あの演奏を客席側から聴ける視点の違いが非常に質の高いサウンドで御愉しみ戴けます。ディック・バリーのサックスとギルモアのギターの駆け引きが極度の緊張感を生む姿も公式盤以上に生々しく出てきますし、終曲部が「Us And Them」に引き継がれてゆく様子もその音楽的な変容がパーフェクトに追ってゆけるのです。ではその客席側から追う生々しいサウンドとはどんなものなのでしょう? また既発盤からどの様にサウンドが変化し、どう向上しているのでしょうか。ここからはそれら気になる音質面を中心にメモしてゆきましょう。

まずディスク1の「Shine On You…」は、導入のシンセの奥行きと広がりが既発盤よりまろやかな音で出ていますが、違いがはっきり分かるのはドラムが入ってくるところ(※ 4分02秒付近~)でしょう。既発盤ではピーキーに割れていた過剰な低音が節度あるファットなサウンドに変貌を遂げています。ギルモアの声が物凄く近い位置から現れるのは変わりませんが、これも本来こう耳に届いていた筈の理想的な音で出ており、聴き易さが飛躍的に向上している事がお判り戴けると思います。「Learning To Fly」も冒頭のドラム・アプローチとベースの鳴り方がかなり変わりました。ミドルテンポの中から滲み出る音楽性も一層掴み易くなり、聴き心地が格段に向上している事を実感される筈です。「High Hopes」は通奏される鐘の音に既発盤の様なキンキンした過剰さが無くなり、アンサンブルの大きな流れの中で移ろい・揺らいでゆく録音本来の描写力がグッと増しています。「Take It Back」はマッシヴな低音の中で鳴り響くギターとボーカルの高音部が理想的な音像で姿を現す様になり、その甘美さと柔軟な運動性が高い次元で感じ取れるでしょう。加えてこの曲ならではの空間性も自然な広がりを見せ、AUD録音特有の魅力的な音の拡散がますます感じられるものになっています。「Coming Back To Life」もこれまで以上に深い音楽的陶酔を得て戴ける音像です。特に中音域が引き締まった事でギルモアの声もムラの無い甘い響きで出ており、ギター・ソロもスキッと立ったサウンドで終曲してゆく姿が絶品です。「Sorrow」はこれまで若干濁って届いていたアンサンブルの強弱が端整な響きに改善され、聴き手の五感をますます刺激します。序盤から唸るギルモアのギターも焦点のバッチリ合った端整な響きで出ていますので要チェックでしょう。「Keep Talking」はカノンで追い掛ける女性コーラスが自然な音艶を取り戻し、3分26秒から入るキーボードの旋律も鋭さもグッと増しています。後半のボコーダーで歪んだギルモアの肉声も聴き疲れしない音色で出てきますので御注目下さい。「Another Brick…Part 2」は会場に充満するシンガロングを突き破る様にコーラスとギターが至近音で飛び込んできますが、これも既発盤と比べると低音濁りの解消による音像の違いが良く分かる一幕です。ギターソロ後半がギルモアからレンウィックにバトンタッチするところ(※ 4分00秒からギルモア、5分14秒からレンウィック)でも、二人のタッチと音色の違いが更に掴み易いサウンドで甦っています。「One Of These Days」では直接的過ぎたガイのベース音が質感豊かな響きに変貌し、背後のアンサンブルが出す中~低音域の威力も濁りの無い強さが感じられる様になっています。またニックのモノローグで音楽が一気に動き出してゆく後半も、音の芯が更に硬くなった至近音が実感出来るでしょう。

ショウ後半となるディスク2は1975年以来、実に19年振りに僅か8回だけ復活した『狂気』完全再現を含んだレアセットです。これも94年型のキリッと整理された演奏が最強のAUDサウンドで現れ、手応えある音楽的な考察が存分に出来るディスクになっています。「Breath In The Air」では既発盤でやや耳障りだった序盤の周囲の手拍子がオフ気味に抑えられて音の見通しがグッと増し、「On The Run」も低音成分が緩和された事で圧迫感が解消され、この日の演奏が本来放っていたコラージュ感が自然なサウンドで耳に届く様になりました。公式盤『p.u.l.s.e』に部分採用された「Time」は出音の整合性が増し、複数日の演奏をツギハギで構成していた公式盤とは違うストレートな満足感が得られるでしょう。一方「Money」は丸ごと『p.u.l.s.e』に採用されたオリジナル演奏ですが、これも音のアタック感が既発盤とは全然違う直球サウンドで甦り、客席側で聴く新鮮な興奮が過去最高の聴き心地で胸に突き刺さります。「Us And Them」も静かなパートとサビの部分の分厚い音の壁がこれまで以上のシンプルさと肉厚さで出ており、最新機材で精査された2016年版の音像に酔い痴れて戴けること請け合いです。また新しい解釈で装飾音が付けられた「Any Colour You Like」もカノンで綴られるシンセサイザーの主旋律が耳に優しいサウンドに生まれ変わり、中盤から入るフックのあるギターも中~高音域の成分が引き上げられた効果でより感情移入し易い響きを実現しています。「Brain Damage」と「Eclipse」は、既発盤でややアンバランスだった響きに整合感が生まれた事で完全再現の音楽的な収束感が一層深く感じられる様になり、70年代に披露されたものの先にある94年型の開放感に打ち震えること確実でしょう。「Wish You Were Here」ではマイクの向きを変えたのか音質が更にシャープで瑞々しいものとなります。アコースティック・ギターの心地良い響きが至近音で炸裂し、ギルモアに合わせて会場中から大合唱が湧き上がるという、海外公演では御馴染みのこの情景も現場直結の生々しいサウンドで甦っています。「Comfortably Numb」では重苦しい中~低音域の動きとギターが舞う高音域との融合感が良く出ており、後半から延々と続くギター・ソロではその旋律の伸びや濃密な音の弾き込みにますます共鳴出来るでしょう。「Run Like Hell」はこの日、歌詞2番のラストをガイが定型通りに歌っていて(※ 御存知の通りこのツアーでは歌詞2番の最後で”♪ Send You Back To ○○ “と、○○にその時の公演地を入れて歌っているケースが定番でした)、この様子も過去最高に質感豊かな音像で聴く事が出来ます。終曲付近では花火が何度か上がる様子、パイロの爆音で演奏が締められる様子などが聴こえますが、これら当日の会場の視覚情報までもが一新されたサウンドで飛び出すのです。
