October 31, 1971, Toledo, Ohio, USA. On the day of Halloween, two and a half months after the first visit to Hakone Aphrodite and Osaka performances, Floyd was in the middle of the North American tour that had been around since the release of the album “Otsukai”.・ How many people can hear the Toledo performance? While listening to this 2014 gift title (*, we will assume that it has already been issued), I think about the reason why this sound source is not so noticeable. The first is incomplete recording. Considering the time, the song “Embryo” and “Fat Old Sun”, which were probably playing at the opening, were unaccounted for, and recording started from the tuning scene before the performance of “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” The imperfection may have lowered the impression. The second reason is “sound image” rather than sound quality. Originally it was monaural recording, but this existing board was recorded in stereo to give it an upper feeling. Therefore, the sound image was wide and unique listening response was born, but on the other hand, it also had a penalty that it was different from the original sound image. However, there are also other situations where there are no other discreet titles that have been made into a sound board, and since then the fans have long been the representative title for the Toledo performance in 1971.

This summer is in full bloom this August. A long dazzling light shines on this sound source that has not hit the spot for a long time, just like the sun in the summer evening. This was released by familiar Neonknight who was familiar with Floyd sound sources, and he refined the cassette source owned by sound source collector TrollerWes, which is quite close to the master recording, making a very high-grade sound image revived in the present age It was. Track (1) ‘s “Introduction” is a testimony that is not a rewritable version of the existing board or a simple image adjustment version. This has been recorded for about 22 seconds longer than the previous release, and the advantage of the TrollerWes version source can be seen from the beginning of the disc suddenly. If “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” begins before the excitement rises, you will notice that the sound has a grade that is different from that of the existing record. In this introduction section, the existing board was a noisy sound image that seems to shake off the REC meter, but the explosion sound due to returning to the original monaural sound has a loud texture and the sound image is tightened sharply You can feel that. 1971年10月31日、米国オハイオ州・トレド。初来日の箱根アフロディーテと大阪公演から2ヶ月半が過ぎたハロウィンのこの日、フロイドはアルバム『おせっかい』発表後に廻っていた北米ツアーの半ばにあリましたが、その道中にあった71年・トレド公演と聞いてピンと来る方はどの程度居られるでしょうか。実はこの日の音源は過去に殆ど音盤化された事が無く、音源ファンにもなかなか馴染みが薄い公演のひとつでした。一応、音盤タイトルとしては2014年5月に『UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO 1971 (無料2CDR)』として当店からギフト・リリースされた事もあるのですが、残念ながら基本的にはテープ・トレーダーのリストの片隅にある、さほど目立たない71年音源というポジションが現状でしょう。

この2014年のギフト・タイトル(※ 以降、既発盤とします)を聴きつつ何故この音源がさほど注目されないのかについて思いを巡らせてみると、その理由がぼんやりと2つほど浮かんできます。まず1つは不完全収録であること。時期を考えると恐らくオープニングで演奏していた筈の「Embryo」と「Fat Old Sun」が未収で、録音は「Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun」の演奏開始前にあるチューニング・シーンから始まっており、その不完全さが印象を低くしているのでしょう。2つめの理由は音質…と言うよりも” 音像 “です。元来はモノラル録音なのですがこの既発盤はそれにアッパー感を出すためステレオ化して収録していました。それ故、その音像はワイドで独特の聴き応えが生まれていたのですが、その一方でオリジナルの音像とは違うというペナルティも背負っていた訳です。…とは言うものの、他に音盤化された目ぼしいタイトルが見当たらないという現状もあり、以降ファンには長年この既発盤が71年トレド公演の代表タイトルとなっていました。

そんな夏真っ盛りの今年8月。久しくスポットが当たらなかったこの音源に、まるで夏の夕刻の陽射しの如く一筋の眩い光が射しました。ソースは同一ながらも衝撃のアッパー感がサウンド全体に漲る、真新しいトランスファー音源が登場して世界中のファンを驚かせたのです。これを公開したのはフロイド音源に精通したお馴染みのNeonknight氏で、彼は音源コレクターTrollerWes氏が所有する、マスター録音にかなり近いカセット・ソースを磨き上げ非常にグレードの高い音像を現代に甦らせたのです。この” TrollerWes版 “カセットの特徴は、当店2014年の既発盤とは別ルートを辿った同一ソースである点で、まず収録タイムが既発盤より長尺である事がアドヴァンテージとして挙げられます。しかし真に驚きなのがそのサウンド、なんとマスター録音純正の高品位なモノラル・ソースで音が残っており、圧倒的な響きの伸びと音の近さが随所で際立っているのです。収録時間の長さでもサウンドでもマスター録音オリジナルの面影を多く残すレア音源・71年トレドの衝撃…そんな2019年TrollerWes版ソースを世界最速で2枚組のプレス盤CDに完全密封したものがこの最新作『UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO 1971』なのです!!

既発盤の焼き直しや単なる音像調整版ではない証がトラック(1)の「Introduction」。これが既発盤より約22秒も長く収録されており、ディスク冒頭からTrollerWes版ソースのアドヴァンテージがいきなり顔を覗かせます。その興奮醒めやらぬうちに「Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun」が始まると、サウンド面でも既発盤とは別格のグレードを備えている事に気付かれるでしょう。この導入部、既発盤では今にもRECメーターを振り切りそうなノイジーな音像でしたが、本来のモノラル・サウンドに戻った事であの爆音が質感豊かなラウドさになっており、かつ音像が鋭く引き締っているのが実感出来るのです。エコーが掛かっているロジャーの声も焦点の確かさによる輪郭の浮き上がりが感じられ、中盤で徐々にテンポアップしてゆく区間でも従来の奥まっていた音像が手前に出て、音の表情を捉え切りながらこれを圧倒的なボリューム感で包み込んでゆく新音像に誰もが仰天される筈です。同様に「Atom Heart Mother」もサウンドの直撃感が際立ち、ぼんやりして距離を感じたあの爆音が直ぐ目の前で鋭く炸裂する興奮を備えました。中盤で入ってくるギルモアのガイドボーカルも従来より高域が明瞭でブレが無くなっており、モノラルになった事による音像のアッパー感がますます高まっているのです。曲が終わると暫く展開するチューニングも約1分45秒間ノーカットで収録していますが、ここは音が多めのチューニング・シーンですので聴く愉しみも倍増でしょう。

「One Of These Days」も演奏の推進力の中から迸る知の放射が、質の高いモノラルの威力で耳元に届きます。特にスクリーム後の後半を聴くと判りますが中音域の明瞭感がグッと上がっており、演奏が従来よりもキリッと至近距離で現れるのです。「Careful With That Axe, Eugene」でも抜けの良い高音(※ ロジャーが随所で出している悲鳴やシンバルの音。オルガンの音色も量感と鋭さを増している事に驚かれるでしょう)と、重心の低い響きの対比が鮮やかで、スクリーム後に各楽器がもつれ合ってゆく様子もブレの無い鮮烈な音像に圧倒されること間違いなしです。ちなみにこの曲は収録時間が既発盤より短くなっているのですが、これは既発盤使用のテープ・ソースがシーンの一部をダブって収録している為で(※ 既発盤8:17~の37秒間)、今回はそのダブりシーンが無い、実際のオリジナル演奏の姿と尺で聴く事が出来る事もTrollerWes版ソースのトピック


「Cymbaline」はこれまで同様に歌が始まる少し手前からのカット・インですが、その音像は全帯域に出力の向上と演奏が前に出ている音の近さをお感じになるでしょう。特に響きの波動と余韻の拡がりはモノラルでありながらポリフォニーの魅力が感じられるほどで、これまで聴けた音像とは格段に違っている事を実感される筈です。残念ながらこのTrollerWes版も足音シークエンスの後半でカットアウト(※ 恐らくテープ・チェンジのため)してしまうのですが、既発盤では掴み辛かったこのシーンの微細な効果音のニュアンスがキリッと立った音で届く点は特筆されるでしょう。またカットアウトする7:20~の無音部分は既発盤では削除していましたが、今回はそれも全てソースに残る姿のまま残しています。大曲「Echoes」は導入部から音像が運んでくる情報量の多さにのっけから圧倒される筈です。ギルモアとライトのハーモニーもそのビブラートから放たれる息遣いの微妙な差までが鮮やかに届きますし、アンサンブルも響きのアッパー感が漲っています。アホウドリの鳴き声シーンも響きを木霊させる事によって現れるミステリアスな心象の移ろいがグッと鮮やかになり、その音色の波動が更に良い状態で聴ける喜びを満喫出来るでしょう。またこの日は「A Saucerful Of Secrets」の代わりに披露された(※ と思われる)「Blues」も、既発盤の混濁した音像ではなくなり、ルーズな響きが灼熱のモノラル・サウンドで届く聴き応え確かな5分40秒間となっています。

これは何も本作だけではありませんが、使用ソースが代わる事によって得られるアッパー感は、イコライズ調整した同一ソース改善によるアッパー感とは全く違う聴き応えと興奮を伴うものです。TrollerWes版ソースで聴く71年トレドはまさにこれで、そのサウンドの近さと明瞭感、マスター録音全容に近付いた最長収録タイムは、この日のフロイドが放った音楽的な射程距離の長さ= それを聴く人の意識をより遠くへ飛ばす力 =を、より確かなものにしています。この最新作の登場を機に私達はこの公演をもう「テープ・トレーダーのリストの片隅にある、さほど目立たない71年音源」とは言えなくなるでしょう。恐らく多くのファンが初体験するであろう71年の秘宝録音、その未体験の興奮を今週末、最良のサウンドで御体験下さい!!
