51 years ago today, PINK FLOYD’s first Osaka performance was realized. The legendary board that tells the story of the scene is reprinted. It is a permanent preservation decision with renewal artwork.
Of course, what is recorded in this work is the performance of “August 9, 1971: Osaka Festival Hall”. It is the symbolic audience recording. A treasure of the history of Japanese Western music, where the existence of shows and recordings is too legendary. At our shop, the existing groups such as “OSAKA 1971: A NEW TAPE TRANSFER” and “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” have been widely and deeply loved. The ultimate form of this was “OSAKA 1971: 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION” released last year. Its outstanding quality brought a shock to the collector world, which was booming on the 50th anniversary, and it was sold out and out of print in the blink of an eye. It has disappeared from history like a phantom. However, such an ultimate board must not become a foamy existence. This work is a permanent preservation press 2CD reprinted for those who failed to obtain the 50th anniversary edition and those who knew its existence later.
“Actually, when I reprinted it, I also tried to remaster it.” But it was too perfect. Of course, it would be easy to change the balance of the sound even a little and sing a “new version”, but even if it was slightly different, it could not be “exceeded”. Strictly speaking, it is not a “2nd press” as it has been slightly modified, such as the position of the track division, but it is almost the same content and has been preserved permanently.
What exactly is the content of the ultimate edition, which has reached the level of “I can’t do it any more”? Let’s look back once more.
● Precision transfer of the highest peak 2nd Gene DAT master again
For this work, first of all, the “extreme” is pursued in terms of materials. The material is the same 2nd generation DAT master as “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971”, which has reigned as “best” for 50 years. Of course, it is not a reuse of “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971”. Back to the original DAT master and flat transfer again. It has been carefully and carefully restored with high-end equipment in 2021.
“The effect is tremendous.” Even when “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” was released, the clear and clear transparency, the drastically reduced hiss, and the powerful direct feeling of the performance sound became a big topic. accuracy is improving. All the notes are different in the whole story, but is it a stereo feeling if it is easy to understand? For example, “atomic heart mother”. Even with the best “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” so far, the left channel was slightly off, and the balance was biased to the right. However, there is no such unstable part in this transfer. Even with “atomic heart mother”, the left channel is picked up sufficiently, and the legendary scene is well-balanced and accurately reproduced.
The latest mastering technology for 2021 that maximizes stability
After reproducing the sound that was stored in the 2nd Gene DAT without leaving anything behind, it is the process of polishing through meticulous mastering. Of course, there is no fancy sound pressure gain or flashy equalizing (if you do, the flat transfer will be ruined). Instead, it improves pitch and stability. You may think “Isn’t it the usual procedure?”, but the accuracy has never been there. We are thoroughly correcting the twist of the tape, which has been the fate so far. If you have “UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971” at hand, please play it. At the beginning “Green Is The Color”, while the intro acoustic guitar sounds beautifully, you can see that the note is subtly wavy. In this work, this slight shaking is stable.
“Of course, it’s not like we’re just fixing the start and cheating.” Conversely, if the final stage is taken as an example, is it good after the second half of “mystery” for 15 minutes? The mysterious keyboard wraps the festival hall in a solemn mood, but the high-pitched long notes are so easy to understand that the shaking is cruel. The conventional board continued to sway finely and constantly, but this work is doing well. This effect changes the nuances of the performance, and the sound even changes the scene. Visually speaking, what emerges from the “mystery” of the conventional edition is a black-and-white world like ink painting or recording film. On the other hand, this work is full color. It is also a majestic sound world where the gold shining pipe organ in the church pours down.
Every time I discover a new master or transfer new technology, I’ve been deeply moved, thinking, “How wonderful was Osaka in 1971?” The state that the quest journey has reached after 50 years of study. That’s what this movie is about. Here is the best master freshness ever, unprecedented reproducibility and stability. This work is the history of the culture of “audience recording” and “vintage record archive” itself, and is also at the forefront of its evolution. そんな本作に記録されているのは、もちろん「1971年８月９日：大阪フェスティバルホール」公演。その象徴オーディエンス録音です。もはやショウも録音の存在も伝説すぎる日本洋楽史の至宝。当店でも『OSAKA 1971: A NEW TAPE TRANSFER』『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』といった既発群が広く、深く愛されてきました。その究極形として登場したのが、昨年リリースされた『OSAKA 1971: 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION』でした。その極めつけのクオリティは50周年に沸くコレクター界に衝撃をもたらし、瞬く間に完売・廃盤。幻のように史上から消え去ってしまいました。しかし、あれほどの究極盤が泡沫の存在になってはいけない。本作は50周年盤を手に入れ損ねた方、後から存在を知った方のために復刻された永久保存プレス２CDなのです。
実のところ、本当は復刻に際して再リマスターも試みました。しかし、その内容はあまりにも完璧だった。もちろん、わずかでも音のバランスを変えて「新バージョン」を謳うことは簡単なのですが、多少違っても「超える」ことはできなかった。トラック割りの位置など、微妙な修正が施されているので厳密には「2ndプレス」ではありませんが、ほぼほぼ同内容で永久保存しています。
まさに「これ以上はムリ」の次元に達した究極盤とはどういう内容なのか。今一度振り返ってみましょう。
●最高峰2ndジェネDATマスターを再度の精密トランスファー
本作は、まず素材からして「極み」が追究されています。その素材とは、50年間で「ベスト」として君臨してきた『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』と同じ2ndジェネのDATマスター。もちろん、『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』の再利用ではありません。その元となるDATマスターに遡って再度フラット・トランスファー。2021年のハイエンド機材で精密・丁寧に起こし直しました。
その効果は絶大。『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』がリリースされた際にもクリアに澄み切った透明感と激減したヒス、さらに演奏音の力強いダイレクト感が大きな話題となりましたが、本作はその美点もそのままに、さらにトランスファーの精度がアップしているのです。もう全編すべてのノートが異なるのですが、分かりやすいところですとステレオ感でしょうか。例えば、「原子心母」。従来ベストの『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』でも左チャンネルがオフ気味になっており、右に偏ったバランスになっていました。しかし、今回のトランスファーではこうした不安定な箇所がない。「原子心母」にしても左チャンネルが手応え十分に拾い出されており、伝説の現場をバランス良く、正確に再現してくれるのです。
●安定感を極限まで高めた2021年最新のマスタリング技術
2ndジェネDATが保存していたサウンドを余すことなく復刻した後は、細心マスタリングでの磨き込み行程です。もちろん、無粋な音圧稼ぎや派手なイコライジングは一切なし（もしやったらせっかくのフラット・トランスファーが台無しです）。そうではなく、ピッチや安定感を向上させています。「いつもの手順じゃないか」と思われるかも知れませんが、その精度がかつて無い。これまで宿命であったテープのヨレを徹底的に補正しているのです。もし、お手元に『UNPROCESSED OSAKA 1971』があるようでしたら、ぜひ再生してみてください。冒頭「Green Is The Colour」イントロのアコギが美しく鳴りつつ、そのノートは微妙に寄れて波打っているのがお分かりになるでしょう。本作は、この僅かな揺れがビシッと安定しているのです。
もちろん、スタートだけ直して誤魔化しているわけではありません。逆に終盤を例に取るなら「神秘」の後半15分台以降が良いでしょうか。神秘的なキーボードが荘厳なムードでフェスティバルホールを包むわけですが、高音のロングノートは揺れが残酷なほど分かりやすい。従来盤は細かく絶え間なく揺れ続けていましたが、本作はビシッとしているのです。この効果は演奏のニュアンス、音は描く光景さえも変えてしまう。視覚的に喩えますと、従来盤の「神秘」から浮かぶのは水墨画や記録フィルムのようなモノクロの世界。それに対して、本作はフルカラー。それも教会でゴールドに輝くパイプオルガンが艶やかに降り注ぐような荘厳な音世界なのです。
