…とは言いながら、「フロイド・70年・ニュルンベルク」というワードを出されてその演奏やサウンド、または代表的なタイトルがいまひとつ思い浮かばない方も多いのではないでしょうか。通常、70年ニュルンベルク音源と言えばRecorder 1が定番で、既発タイトルとしては海外Godfatherレーベルのボックスセット『THE MASSED GADGET OF HERCULES 1970-1974 (GR BOX 09 A/B)』のディスク1・2等が一応は存在しています。ただ熱心なファンの方であれば御存知の通り、このソースにはテープ劣化による音ヨレ(※もしくは、録音中に走行中のテープが噛んだ様な物理的な音像の歪み)がショウ冒頭に顕著で、しかもほぼ全ての曲間でカットが入るというネガティヴな要素も含んでおり、これが理由でファンの記憶に残り辛い・決定打となり辛い側面を持っていた様に思えます。でもだからと言って簡単に一蹴出来る様なソースでは無いのがこのRecorder 1の凄いところ。何故ならこの録音は基本的に演奏音が大変近く肉厚で、そこに高い透明感も併せ持つという優れたサウンド・ポテンシャルを備えていた為です。だからこそ海外では前述の様なタイトルにもなったと思うのですが、ただそのケースでもこの公演を単体売りではなく、ボックスセットの中の1公演として含めていた点にRecorder 1の品質の微妙さが伺える訳です。

しかし後年出てきたRecorder 2は違いました。これはRecorder 1の様なテープの音ヨレが無く、曲間にもカットが一切入らず、音像も綺麗で安定したソースだったのです。しかし難点が無かった訳ではなく、例えば「Interstellar Overdrive」の途中で部分的に音が失われていたり(※恐らくテープの残量切れ・テープチェンジによるもの)、端整で綺麗な音像ではあるものの、サウンドのダイナミックさには若干欠け、Recorder 1ほどには演奏音が近くないという物足りなさがありました。一応既発盤として『MASTERS OF THE MYSTIC ARTS – Heiner B Edition』という海外製のタイトルが昨年登場したものの、Recorder 1よりポジティヴな要素を多く持ちながら全く話題にならなかったのはそうした事が理由だったのでしょう。でも一長一短はありながらも「これがフロイド70年のニュルンベルクなのか!」と思わず口にしてしまうほどの最終到達点的な優れたアッパー版があれば、見過ごしていたフロイドの名演が1つ再発見出来る筈です。そもそも基本的な音質は決して悪くない同日録音が2つも揃っているのにファンにはさほど認識されていない・それを体系的に総括したタイトルすら存在していないなど、現在も日々考証が進むフロイドの音源史から鑑みても非常に奇妙な話です。そこに快心のアッパー・クオリティでシーンに一撃を打ち込むのが今回のSigma最新作という訳なのです!!

今回本作に使用したマスターは、イギリス在住の知る人ぞ知る重鎮フロイド・コレクターから当レーベルが直接提供を受けたもので、彼が所有するファン垂涎の音源コレクションから特に優れたRecorder 1、Recorder 2を元に制作しています。特にショウの序盤でダメージが目立つRecorder 1は彼とSigmaスタッフで綿密に議論を重ねながら可能な限りの補正と調整を施し、音揺れ・音ヨレを軽減させる最新のデジタル・リマスタリングを行っています。この地道なチューンアップ作業によって前述したGodfather盤より音像のプロポーションが引き締まり、収録音の2017年版アップデートが実現したのを初めとして、何故かGodfather盤では曲順が入れ替えられていた「Atom Heart Mother」も今回正しい位置(※アンコール・ラスト)に戻した事で、この日のショウを正しいセットで御愉しみ戴けるようになっています。一方Recorder 2では演奏が部分的に失われていた「Interstellar Overdrive」にRecorder 1をミリ秒単位で同期させ、欠落部分にデジタル補填する事で初めてシームレス過去最長版として甦っており、これが世界初の音盤化となってディスク3と4に収まっています。同時にヒスノイズの低減と厳密なピッチ調整、更には使用テープから最も良い状態で音が出るよう最適なゲインとフェーダーの調整もしていますので、研究サイトYeeshkul!で公開されていたものより音質と品質が格段に向上したバージョンで御愉しみ戴けるのです。手前味噌かもしれませんが今後未知のRecorder 3でも出てこない限り、本作の磨き抜かれたこの音像こそが70年ニュルンベルクのニュー・スタンダードとなる事は確実でしょう。

【一皮剥けたRecorder 1】
ディスク1と2は定番のRecorder 1です。実はRecorder 1には大元のマスター録音から枝分かれした「2nd Gen」「3rd Gen」「5th Gen」など幾つかのバージョンがあるのですが、本作に使用しているのは「1st Gen」の系統となっています。ただこのバージョンは音は良いのですがコピー時のテープフリップによって「A Saucerful Of Secrets」が2つに分断されているほか「Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun」が未収録で、そこだけは大元マスターから別系統を辿り、録音時本来の姿を残している2nd Genで補いました。ソース全体にはまだテープ劣化の片鱗・修正不可能なダメージが残っているものの、それは本当に部分的かつ一時的なものですし、基本秀逸な原音を変更せずに新たな音の輝きを宿している点こそが、今回の大きなアッパー感となっているのです。例えば「Astronomy Domine」は序盤で音ヨレ・音像の浮き沈みが未だ残るものの、最新リマスターの成果も手伝って5分もするとかなり安定感を取り戻し、原音が本来秘めていた鮮度と重量感が炸裂して私達を仰天させるのです。「Cymbaline」はベース音を基軸にする中~低音域が更に質感アップしました。中盤の足音シーンも生々しい立体感が備わり、終曲部もシンバルの音を残して終る姿が一段と明瞭に聴こえ、録音によっては埋没してしまいがちなこうした繊細なニュアンスも一層間近で感じ取れる様になっています。「A Saucerful Of Secrets」は序盤の不協音の多層コラージュがますますダイナミックに飛び出し、このシーンだけでもRecorder 1が単に傷だらけなだけではない、深みと驚きの解像度を備えた録音である事が御理解戴ける筈です。ところでこの日は終盤でギルモアがガイド・ボーカルを入れる箇所が半センテンスほど早いのも特徴です。つまり翌年の箱根アフロディーテでの演奏に代表される2コーラスたっぷり歌うタイプと、演奏初期の様に1コーラスしか入れないタイプとの中間にあたる過渡期の表現となっており、これがアッパー感溢れるサウンドで聴ける点もまた要チェックでしょう。「Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun」は前述の通り2nd Genに残されたものを使用していますが、リマスタリング効果絶大で音質は殆んど変わりません。特に中間部(※7分07秒付近~)などはシンプルな音の移ろいがしなやかに流れ、音と音の間隙にすら酔える上質なサウンドにGen違いである事が信じられなくなるでしょう。またこの日” Not Called Anything “と紹介される「Atom Heart Mother」はギターの驚異的な伸びと広がりを堪能出来る特級音像となっています。4分54秒付近からは機材不調なのか通常入ってくるオルガン旋律が無いまま進行するシーンがあったり、その後暫くしてやっと入るガイド・ボーカルも他日とは随分違う旋律で歌っているなど(※これはその後に続く2声シーンも同様)、濃淡に充ちたこの日ならではの展開に改めて驚きの発見をされるでしょう。

【リールから甦る、世界初音盤化のRecorder 2全長版】
ディスク3と4は、Recorder 2として近年登場したリール音源です。音源史を紐解くとこの原録音は当時Heiner Bなる人物がドイツ製ポータブル型リール録音機” Magnetophon 301 “で行った事が判明していますが、今回ディスク化するにあたって若干高めだったピッチを正確に補正し、原録音で部分カットがあった「Interstellar Overdrive」をソース1(=Recorder 1)で補填する事で音源史上初めてシームレスに聴き通せる全長版として甦っています。またRecorder 1には無い大きなアドヴァンテージとなっているのが、MCや軽めのチューニングを含む曲間がノーカットで含まれている点でしょう。これはディスク冒頭から表面化しており、「Astronomy Domine」の演奏が始まるまでの場内の様子やサウンドチェック・シーン、そしてロジャーによる曲紹介が約55秒間も含まれているのです。またこの曲に関してはRecorder 1で顕著だった激しい音ヨレが無い為に演奏の全体像がバッチリ掴めるというアドヴァンテージも兼ね備えており、これはRecorder 1でしかこの日の演奏に接した事が無い人にとっても嬉しい初体験となる筈です。「Cymbaline」もRecorder 1で発生していたテープの音揺れ・音ヨレが全く無い為、本来あるべき姿で演奏が聴けるのが魅力です。サウンドの質感も素晴らしく、歌詞1番の途中からボーカルに軽めに掛けられるエコーがエコー発生時から綺麗に出てきますし、ドラムの打音とベース音もRecorder 1以上にそれぞれの音が明瞭に聴き分けられる解像度を誇っている点も見逃せません。「A Saucerful Of Secrets」では音の近さと迫力こそRecorder 1に一歩譲りますが、一貫して全く音がブレないトータルなサウンド・クオリティはRecorder 1を軽く凌駕し、リールによる実況録音の極みを存分に満喫して戴ける筈です。終曲直後に入るギルモア(ロジャー?)のMCも、Recorder 1では言葉の途中でカットされていたものがノーカットで登場し、「The Embryo」も演奏が始まるまでの様子をRecorder 1より約30秒近くも長く含んでいる点も魅力です。「Interstellar Overdrive」は前述の通り元ソースの7分11秒付近で音の欠落が生じていたものをRecorder 1の同部分をデジタル補填する事で全く違和感無く仕上げ、Recorder 2史上初めて音楽的な流れを止めること無く聴き通せるようになっています。最後の「Atom Heart Mother」も演奏開始前の曲紹介を含めたMCとサウンドチェックの模様がノーカット収録されているほか、Recorder 1では途切れる演奏終了後のMCがこちらもノーカットで含まれている点も嬉しいアドヴァンテージとなっています。

かように70年ニュルンベルク音源は演奏内容もマニアックですし、避けられないテープ劣化も若干残っているため初心者向けのタイトルとは言えない側面を持っているかもしれません。しかし一方のソースで薄れている音楽的・音像的なニュアンスをもう一方のソースが確実に補填し合うシンメトリーは聴いて接するほどに面白く、これは2つの録音から多角的にその日の演奏を掴み取る悦びも知っている中級以上の音源ファンにとっては、久し振りに手応えある知の興奮をもたらしてくれるでしょう。音源初体験の方は勿論ですが、どちらか片方のソースしか聴いた事が無い方でも存分に47年前の埋もれた名演に再接近出来る逸品です。機智に富んだ当日の演奏と、それに息を呑む会場の空気を最大限に吸い込んだ優良音質でありながら、羽に傷を負った鳥の如く音源史に息を潜めていた2つの同日別録音。今それは充分に傷を癒した生命力逞しいプレス盤4枚組となって飛び立ち、我々が見失っていた名演に邂逅させてくれるのです!!
