ディスク1は1970年7月16日、英国BBC制作の公式擬似ステレオ版です。今回本ディスクでは旧Sirene盤で使用したハーヴェステッド・レーベルの” HRV 007 “ソースではなく、” hezekiahx2 “と呼ばれる別ソースを採用しています。これの元はレアなBBCの業務放送用LP盤(※BBC Transcription Disc)であり、このディスク1は実質そのトランスクリプションディスクを丸ごと収録したものとなりますが、周知の通りそのサウンドは現存するソース中では最も伝統と音質の優位性が認められるものであり、音が鮮やかで、音像にも抜群の安定感がある点が圧倒的なアドヴァンテージとなっているのです。フロイドの1970年BBCライブはマルチトラックで録音されなかったため、モノラルか、疑似ステレオが施され放送されるのが常であり、この疑似ステレオミックスに関しては色々なバージョンが音盤化されていますが、ミックスがそれそれで異なった質感を持っているのも特徴です。今回の盤ではSirene盤とは全く異なった印象のBBC純正疑似ステレオミックスが堪能出来るほか、近年の放送やWESTWOOD ONEの放送ではオミットされる場合の多かったジョン・ピールのMCもがやはりBBC純正の疑似ステレオで、かなりの部分が収録されているのも特徴でしょう。Sirene盤では演奏間の観客の拍手やMCはMonoマスターを繋いで再現したものだったので、この差は大きいと言えます。今回CD化に際してはネット公開されていたものはピッチが若干遅かったので原音から+1.5%上げて全てのシーンで正しく音が出るよう厳密に補正しているほか、原音に影響が出ないよう細心のヒスリダクションを施しました。Sirene盤にあった様な浮き立つような金属臭い処理がここでは全く感じられません。またマスターの放送用LPで生じていたスクラッチもピンポイント狙い撃ちで除去するリマスタリングをしていますので、本ディスクで聴けるサウンドはSirene盤はおろかどの既発盤とも違う精緻でフレッシュな音像を持ちながらどれよりも威力ある直球サウンドが出る究極の仕上がりとなっており、あの70年代に広く流通した疑似ステレオ・バージョン純正の輝きと響きを最高値で解き放つディスクとなっています。しかも冒頭のジョン・ピールのスピーチ前の部分(今回のCD出だしの部分)はSirene盤より出だしが長く(3秒弱)小さい音ではありますが、開演前と思しき観客のざわつきらしきものが確認できます。ジョン・ピールのスピーチからスムーズに移行する「The Embryo」では弾力ある透明感最高値の音の塊が耳元で跳ね上がり、導入部から過去最高の眩い音像を実感されるでしょう。「Green Is The Colour」もSirene盤では演奏前の無音部分(何者かのざわつきは確認できます)が僅かにカットされていましたが本ディスクは一呼吸置いたオリジナルの尺のまま長めに入っており、至近距離で出るギルモアの歌声やオルガンの彫りの深い音色などそれぞれの出音が過去全ての既発盤を超える麗しさで届けられます。「ユージン」はTSP盤やこれのコピー盤等に代表される90年代初頭の初期CDタイトルに散見された疑似ステレオミックスで左チャンネルのレベルダウンとミックスの不自然さが特徴でしたが(※不具合が無かったのはWESTWOOD ONEの放送盤くらいかも知れません)、本ディスクではそうした左chのレベルダウンやミックスの違和感も皆無です。そして注目の「If」も期待を裏切りません。というよりも、この日ならではの調和の取れたハーモニーがこれほど質の高い音像で聴けるのは本ディスクだけでしょう。開始時の繋ぎも安定しているのでSirene盤の様な音揺れ・音像ムラが一切無い事も大きなトピックです。また演奏終了後に入るジョン・ピールのMCがSirene盤より短いのも特徴で、ここは番組の次回予告が約19秒間ほど省かれた短縮版で流れます。これは放送用LP(=本ディスクのマスター)を制作する際に後の再放送回でも使えるよう当初の収録時に含まれていた次週内容の告知が消されている為ですが、オンエア音源とは違う放送盤ならではのこの縮尺差もマニアには興味深いところです。「Atom Heart Mother」は過去最長版で、ここではまず演奏冒頭の”♪ ブーン… “と鳴る鈍い音がその出だしからノーカットで立ち上がります。Sirene盤ではこの出だし音がカット・インになっており、本来あった約6秒間ほどの音が失われていました。しかしここでは音が立ち上がるその6秒間も含めたパーフェクトな姿で甦っていて、場内の声が遠めに薄く含まれているのも特徴です。また今回の盤ではアナログチックなヒスノイズこそありますが、Sirene盤で顕著だったデジタルっぽい波打つような不快なキンキンしたノイズは全く無いうえ、演奏後の拍手もSirene盤は約11秒でフェイド・アウトしていたのに対しここでは約29秒でフェイド処理されていますので、その差約18秒も長く当日現場の歓声が含まれている事もトピックでしょう。尚、Sirene盤で収録されていた「Fat Old Sun」が本ディスクでは未収ですが、これは同曲の演奏の存在自体が近年明らかになったものであり、70年版の同曲疑似版がそもそも存在しない為です(※エアチェック音源さえ出回っていません)。Sirene盤はこの曲のみモノラルで挿入していましたが、過去最強の70年BBCステレオ・サウンドを誇る本ディスクにわざわざモノラルを入れる必要はないと判断し、今回は収録を見送る事でステレオ版としての純度と完成度を上げています。

★Disc 2 / 1971 – Stereo

ディスク2は71年9月30日・BBCリアル・ステレオ版です。こちらもSirene盤とは異なり、今回はハーヴェステッド・レーベルが公開した” HRV CDR 007B Rev A “という現時点で最新のアッパー版ソースをベースに仕上げました(※これもディスク1と同じくBBCの業務放送盤” BBC Transcription LP “が元マスターです)。実はSirene盤も同じハーヴェステッド・ソースなのですがそちらは旧バージョンの「HRV CDR 007」を使用しており、今回の” Rev A “はこれを凌駕する極上のアッパーサウンドとなっているのが特徴です。このRev Aは公開されてから暫く経ちますが何故か現在までどこからもこれを使用したBBCタイトルが出ておらず、このディスク2が初の音盤化となっている事も特筆しておきましょう。音像に関してもSirene盤では「Fat Old Sun」のイントロや「Echoes」冒頭の静かな箇所でヒュルヒュルとしたノイズリダクションに伴うデジタル的で耳障りな金属ノイズが浮遊しておりましたが、今回のRev A版ではそのようなデジタル臭とは無縁のナチュラルかつブレの無い肉厚で整った高品質音像になっており、ゼロから生まれ変わったそのサウンド・クオリティに深い満足感を得て戴けること間違いなしです。しかし一方でこのRev Aは「The Embryo」と「Blues」が不自然なノイズリダクションによって音がデジタル臭く変質したソースのままだった訳ですが(※それ故に音盤化が敬遠されたのかもしれません)、本ディスクでは後年この2曲を米国のラジオ局” WNEW-FM “が放送した新規同ソースの再放送エアチェック音源” Broadcast WNEW-FM バージョン “に差し替える事で、本来の鋭いリアル・ステレオの音像を取り戻しています(※このエアチェック・テープのマスターはTDKのタイプⅡハイポジ・カセット「SA 90」で、若干のノイズはありますが、ナチュラルかつ鮮度最高の1st Genです)。つまり全て新規採用の最上級ソース2つを波形レベル1/1000単位で接続し、そこに厳密なノイズリダクションと出音バランス・ピッチ調整を施したうえで全体をリビルドしていますので、Sirene盤はもとより過去全ての既発盤からも大幅なアップグレードを果たした歴代最強の71年BBCステレオ決定盤となっているのです。何しろ冒頭「Fat Old Sun」からして非の打ち所が無いパーフェクト・サウンドで、各楽器が綺麗に分離して出る響きの繊細さも驚異的です。特に5分59秒付近~6分32秒で聴けるリズムレスのシーンはドラム以外の楽器が出す微かな音色が完璧に出ており、やがてタムが入って音が劇的に花開く様子(~8分42秒付近迄)などは肌を這うリアルな音触とドライヴ感に卒倒されるでしょう。「One Of These Days」は初め左側から出ているギターが2分32秒付近からは右からも出てくるなど、リアルステレオならではの音配分が既発盤超えの鮮やかさで甦ります。4分07秒からは再びギターが左に戻って右からはオルガンが鋭い音色で出てきますが、この両chのセパレート感も歴代BBCタイトル最高の鮮烈さで出ていますので要チェックです。1st Genの新登場ソースを使用した「The Embryo」は揺れる曲想の中でフレーズごとに変化するこの日ならではの個性をしっかり伝えてくれます。各楽器の出音も最高のバランスで出ており、BBCコールサインが被るシーン(※7分51秒~56秒)もエアチェック・ソースならではの雰囲気が御愉しみ戴けるでしょう。「Echoes」も各楽器の弱音の重なりが序盤から立体的に像を結び、アホウドリの鳴き声で引き離されていた各音が再び寄り添ってこの日ならではの融合を果たすあの後半パートが生まれ変わった濃密サウンドで現れるので是非チェックしてみて下さい。「Blues」は冒頭僅かにカットインですが、1st Genでしか有り得ない音の粒立ちや明瞭感は軽くSirene盤を凌駕しており、放たれた旋律が音域一杯に充満する驚きで充ちています。

★Disc 3 / 1970 – Mono

ディスク3は70年BBCのリアル・モノラル版です。使用マスターはSirene盤の使い回しではなく、優秀なネット音源” BBC Radio One Mono Master Reels “を新たに起こし直した2015年最新版となっています。使用ソースがマスター・リールから落とされているだけにこの音質もまた公式級そのもので、Sirene盤にあったジリジリと若干ノイジーな質感(CD冒頭のジョン・ピールのMCを聞き比べるだけで、その音質差は歴然としています)が完璧に取り払われた純度の高い透明感極上のスーパー・サウンドとなっているのが特徴です。確かにリアル・モノラルなので音像は左右への広がりこそありませんが、ここで注目したいのはこれが決して中央に寄り固まっただけの平坦な音の塊ではなく、当時のBBCエンジニアが施したミックス作業によって音像に興味深い奥行きと音楽的な浮き立ちがよく出ている点でしょう。例えば「The Embryo」の各楽器の出音位置をよく聴いてみればオルガンが奥、ギターが真ん中、ドラムとベースが手前となっており、ボーカルにしてもメインのギルモアは真ん中・ロジャーはもう少し手前に置かれているなど、直線上に距離を設けられた各楽器が予想外の音の像を結ぶ事で曲が秘めていた未知の魅力が出ている事に気付かされる筈です。「Fat Old Sun」はシンバルとスネアの打音が歌声よりも手前に出ている音の配置がユニークですが、ギター・ソロではそのシンバルよりも更に手前にギターが出て軽やかに旋律を奏でており、新ソースで堪能するその大胆かつフレッシュな音の浮き立ちと音の濃淡に魅了されること確実です。「Green Is The Colour」は一転してリアル・モノラルならではの安堵感に充ちた音像が際立ちます。サウンドの全体像が間近で掴み易く、その溶ける様な響きが2015年最新リマスターで更なる陶酔を極める姿を是非御確認下さい。「ユージン」は公式擬似ステレオでは劇場型のスペクタクル感がありましたが、ここでは紙が経年焼けした幻想文学の古書を一枚ずつめくる様なサスペンスがあり、音の中に潜む恐怖とドラマがリアル・モノラルのマイルドな響きで解放される興奮を目の当たりにされるでしょう。また「If」で聴ける音像の温もりとまろやかな波動はモノラルが決してモノクロ=単色ではない事を教えてくれますし、放たれる音の色彩感にも幻惑されること請け合いです。「Atom Heart Mother」は管楽器が加わっているだけに音色の多様性が濃厚に現れ、モノラルの中に開く豊かなポリフォニーの魅力が極上の質感で甦っています。音配置の奥行きも多彩で、エンジニアが単一指向のサウンドの中に知恵と工夫とセンスを駆使してフロイドの音楽を惹き出そうとしていた事がますますお分かりになるでしょう。またそのBBCによって編集されている箇所(※19分15秒~20分19秒)もステレオ版以上に直接的に現れて音のコラージュを間近で感じられますし、終演後の拍手喝采シーンも最長版で御愉しみ戴ける様になっています。これは今回使用したマスターとSirene盤が終演後ほぼ同位置で収録が終了しているのに対し、第3の別ソースにはその先の約45秒間ほどまで含まれている事が判明した為で、この約40秒間をそこから新規に付け足してあるからです。勿論この部分も丁寧にリマスターし、繋ぎ目は重複や欠落の生じないよう波形レベル1/1000単位で接続位置を合わせた完璧な仕上がりとなっていますので、終演後の余韻も全て当日の場内音と共に最長で御愉しみ戴けます。

★Disc 4 / 1971 – Mono

ディスク4は71年9月30日のリアル・モノラル版です。これもディスク2のリアル・ステレオを単にモノ・ダウンしたのではなく元々別個に存在した音源で、通称” BBC sound archive mono master “と呼ばれる優秀なソースを元に制作しています(※当時録音されたリール・マスターが何らかの事情でアングラ界に流通した時のマスター・クローンと思われます)。これはSirene盤と概ね同じものなのですが、Sirene盤は「Echoes」終演後の拍手シーン他で曲間の観客の拍手が片側チャンネルに偏る箇所がある事からも分かる通り、全てが厳密なモノラルではありませんでした。しかし今回使用のマスターはそうした欠点が無い極上のリアル・モノラルとなっており、この日の演奏を更に別の角度から照らし出す秀逸なディスクとなっています。ディスク3同様にこれも当時のBBCエンジニアによる秀逸なミックスによって出てくる音の立体感と浮き立ちを愉しめるのが大きな魅力で、冒頭「Fat Old Sun」もその序盤から各楽器の計算された音の配置と奥行きを感じ取れるでしょう。例えばかなり手前に置かれたシンバルが終始シャープに鳴ってサウンドに明瞭感が与えられていたり、7分13秒を境にしてそれまで奥にあったオルガンがグッと手前に出てくるなど、リアル・ステレオには無い音の像が結ばれる姿がSirene盤以上に端整な音色で飛び出します。「One Of These Days」はステレオ版と比べてベースの音が丸く・重くなっているのが印象的ですが、そのぶんリズムの弾力と勢いが違って聴こえるのが面白いところです。バスドラムの特徴的な” ドンドンドン! “や、ニックによる”♪ One Of These Days, I’m going to… “というモノローグがステレオ・ミックスに比べて随分とオンに捉えられている事からも、これがきちんとモノ用にミックスされたものである事が伺えますし、バスドラムとシンバルとオルガンが前に出てノイジーなギターが奥に配置されるなど、大胆なサウンド・デザインで浮き上がる音楽的な威力が過去最高のリアル・モノラルで御堪能戴けます。「The Embryo」もその浮遊感とフロイド特有の音の隙間が麗しいモノ・サウンドで現れ、4つの楽器のシンプルな音の交差がSirene盤を軽く超える音像で流れてゆきます。8分05秒からギターが一気に手前に出て濃厚な旋律を放つ姿もSirene盤の比ではありませんし、歌の途中9分10秒付近からボーカルに軽くエコーが掛かって空間に淡い残響感を出している様子、そして9分45秒付近で低音のレベルがグッと上げられている面白さも、これまで以上に直接的な音で御愉しみ戴けるでしょう。「Echoes」は導入のソナー音がステレオ版とは全く違う奥行きの中で現れ、モノラルながらも音響の広がりと空間性がしっかり出ている事に驚かれる筈です。歌唱パートに入るとさすがにステレオ版よりは声に距離感を感じるものの、焦点の合ったリアル・モノならではの音像が演奏全体をつぶさに報告してくれます。コーダで何度も何度も立ち上がっては消えるシンセサイザーの効果もリアル・ステレオでは淡い音が幾重にも重なって聴こえますが、本ディスクではそれとは比べ物にならないほど直接的なサウンドで飛び出し、ステレオとモノで受けるイメージが随分と違う事も一新されたサウンドから強く実感されると思います。

★まとめ

資料によればBBCは1971年頃までモノラル放送だった様で、ステレオで録音されたものは放送用にモノラル・ミックスを施したうえで放送していた事が知られています(※局がステレオ放送を開始した後は改めてステレオ・ミックスが作成されていた様です)。当時はこうして1つの演奏が録音されるとその使用目的や設備によってサウンドの(或いはミックスの)バージョンが複数存在するケースが割と一般的だった訳で、公式擬似ステレオ、リアル・ステレオ、リアル・モノラルという3つの顔を持っていたこのフロイドBBC70年‐71年もそうした時代の産物だった事は周知の通りです。しかしそうであったが故にこのBBC音源は幾多のタイトルが安易に乱発され、ファンに選択肢があり過ぎる戸惑いと困惑をもたらしてきた事もまた事実でした。BBC音源の面白さは1つの演奏を2つの録音スタイルで聴く事、すなわち1つの表現を2つの視点で捉える事で多面的な理解を得られる点にありますから、安易に作られた粗悪なコピーでの聴き比べでは本物の理解は得られませんし、ステレオだけ・モノラルだけ聴いただけでは片手落ちです。ゆえに全てのサウンド・クオリティが完璧な姿でそこにある本作は、聴き馴染んできた2つの演奏と3つの録音に本物の考察と多様な理解を与えてくれますし、玉石混交だったフロイドBBCの音源史にも大きな区切りと決着を付ける事になるでしょう。本放送から約45年、待った甲斐のある本物の、そして遂に登場した究極のBBCタイトルです。この週末、最終決定盤と呼ぶに相応しいその内容を是非手に取ってお確かめ下さい!!
