Legendary Peter Green of White Blues who broke the silence for more than 10 years and revived in 1996. “Cozy Tape”, which records the newly formed SPLINTER GROUP, is a permanent preservation press decision.
SPLINTER GROUP is the band of Peter who restarted, but it is not just a back. Nigel Watson, who also participated in the early solo singles “Heavy Heart” and “Beasts of Burden” (who is also the brother-in-law of Clefford Davis, the manager of FLEETWOOD MAC), supported by heroes Cozy Powell, Neil Murray, and QUEEN But a super band that famous people such as Spike Edney met together. They all participated in Peter’s return work “PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP”, but this work is a rehearsal album recorded in that early session.
In addition, the quality is superb with “super”. It is directly converted to CD from Cozy’s relic cassette which has produced many masterpieces, but it is by far the highest quality in that legendary collection. Some rehearsals on cozy tapes were recorded on cassette decks in the studio, but this work is different. Strictly speaking, only the vocals do not feel a little distance, but the instrument group is a stereo sound board. It is also a super official class super beautiful guy, and every one of the masters’ sound flows into his ear. The rehearsal album has a feeling of closed room, “ I am sitting in the studio ”, “ there is a member in front of me ”, but this work jumps over that dimension, the sync feeling as if the band was sitting in the brain It is approaching.
And the blues drawn with such a sound is just delicious. The mood is relaxed because it is a rehearsal, but still, it is not a practice or sound adjustment, but I play the historical masterpieces that are already familiar to my mind and body with my heart. Now, let’s organize that set.

The cover group is the blues standard that I heard in my debut album “PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP”, but I’m also happy to play FLEETWOOD MAC’s “Black Magic Woman” and “Albatross”. “Indians” is an original by Nigel’s pen, and it was not only recorded in “DESTINY ROAD” later but also became a repertoire in early live.
And the performance that spells such masterpieces is just wonderful. Immediately after the start of the rehearsal, there is a feeling of groping as if searching for a sweet spot, but the enthusiasm grows as each song is played, and the singing voice becomes stronger. Peter revives the distinctive tone that any white and bluesman longs for, with delicate phrases and delicate longs. The backing SPLINTER GROUP is also an iron wall. Especially wonderful is cozy. Although he is a power hitter that is extremely popular with HR fans, his true value lies in the breath of the ensemble. I listen to other parts often and add a little silly to each show and the timing of entry to motivate the members. Such a style makes the beautiful style HR of the beautiful style of RAINBOW and BLACK SABBATH dramatic, but with blues it becomes “good relationship” and “friendliness”. In addition, Cozy adapted to Peter’s world until he sealed the synonymous Tubas when joining the SPLINTER GROUP. Although it is a cozy mark with a lot of hard sounds and silly sounds, it is also a session album where the breathing feeling of blues is really delicious.

It is a delicious piece that can be heard as a prototype of the debut work “PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP”, or as an expanded version that includes the FLEETWOOD MAC number. When it first appeared, it was a CDR title on the Masterport label, but such high-quality sound and rich music must be preserved forever. It is a press CD release for that. The exquisite taste of white and blues revived in the 90s. Please chew slowly and forever.

SPLINTER GROUPは再始動したピーターのバンドではありますが、ただのバックではありません。初期ソロシングル『Heavy Heart』『Beasts of Burden』にも参加したナイジェル・ワトソン(FLEETWOOD MACのマネージャーだったクリフォード・デイビスの義兄弟でもあります)を相棒に、英雄コージー・パウエルやニール・マーレイ、QUEENのサポートでも有名なスパイク・エドニーといった名手が一同に会したスーパーバンド。彼らは全員ピーターの復帰作『PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP』にも参加しているわけですが、本作はその初期セッションで録音されたリハーサル・アルバムなのです。

……と、このようになっています。カバー群はデビュー作『PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP』でも聴けたブルース・スタンダードですが、さらにFLEETWOOD MACの「Black Magic Woman」「Albatross」まで演奏してくれるのが嬉しい。「Indians」はナイジェルのペンによるオリジナルで、後の『DESTINY ROAD』に収録されただけでなく、初期のライヴでもレパートリーとなってきたナンバーです。
そして、そんな名曲群を綴る演奏がとにかく素晴らしい。リハーサルの開始直後はスウィート・スポットを捜すような手探り感もあるのですが、1曲1曲と演奏を重ねる毎に熱気が醸成されていき、歌声も力強くなっていく。ピーターはホワイト・ブルースマンなら誰でも憧れる独特のトーンが蘇り、細やかなフレーズは繊細に、ロングは艶やに鳴る。そのバックを務めるSPLINTER GROUPも鉄壁。特に素晴らしいのは、やはりコージー。HRファンに絶大な人気を誇るパワーヒッターではありますが、彼の真価はむしろアンサンブルの呼吸感にある。他パートをよく聴いており、それぞれの見せ場や入りのタイミングにちょっとしたオカズを入れることでメンバーのやる気を掻き立てる。そうしたスタイルはRAINBOWやBLACK SABBATHといった構成のキッチリした様式美HRをドラマティックにしますが、ブルースだと“付き合いの良さ”・“人懐こさ”になる。しかも、コージーはSPLINTER GROUP参加にあたって代名詞のツーバスを封印してまでピーターの世界に順応。硬質な抜けの良い音やオカズの数々はコージー印ではあるのですが、ブルースの呼吸感が実に美味しいセッション・アルバムでもあるのです。

思い返せば、コージーは常に英雄の復活を好んでいました。自動車事故から復帰したジェフ・ベック、独り立ちに挑んだリッチー・ブラックモアやマイケル・シェンカー、ビジネスのトラブルで解散状態に陥っていたWHITESNAKEやBLACK SABBATH、再起を賭けたEL&POWELL、フレディの悲劇から立ち直ろうとしていたブライアン・メイ……。コージーはそんな英雄達を側らで鼓舞し、第一線へと押し上げていった。そして、SPLINTER GROUPではホワイト・ブルースの伝説を甦らせた。本作は、そんな現場に立ち会える極上のスタジオ・アルバムなのです。
もちろん、そんな諸事情をヌキにしても、本作はあまりにも素晴らしくリアルな音楽作品。デビュー作『PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP』のプロトタイプとして聴いても、FLEETWOOD MACナンバーまで盛り込んだ拡張版としても美味しい1枚です。初登場の際にはMasterportレーベルのCDRタイトルでしたが、これほど高品質なサウンドと芳醇な音楽は永久保存されなければならない。そのためのプレスCDリリースです。90年代に甦った味わい深いホワイト・ブルースの“極み”。どうぞいつでも、いつまでも、じっくりと噛みしめてください。
