Paul Simon who announced his retirement from the tour activity and is traveling around the world entitled “HOMEWARD BOUND: THE FAREWELL TOUR 2018”. A superb live album that contains his UK final concert appears.
The last show was “July 15, 2018 Hyde Park” performance. It is a superb audience recording when I served as a big bird at the outdoor festival “BRITISH SUMMER TIME” continuing from 2013. First of all, let’s check the position of the show from the whole picture of the last world tour of Paul.

This is the schedule which has been published to date. Initially, this work ‘s Hyde Park performance was announced as “last performance”, but then “North America # 2” was also announced. その最後のショウとなったのは「2018年７月15日ハイドパーク」公演。2013年から続く野外フェス“BRITISH SUMMER TIME”で大トリを務めた際の極上オーディエンス録音です。まずは、ポール最後のワールドツアーの全体像からショウのポジションを確認してみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されているスケジュール。当初、本作のハイドパーク公演を”ラスト・パフォーマンス”とアナウンスされていましたが、その後に「北米#2」も発表。これから追加されるとは考えにくく、９月22日のクイーンズ公演がラストになると言われています。そんな記念碑ショウを収めた本作のクオリティは、まさに極上。先週からさまざまなアーティストの『HYDE PARK 2018』をレポートしておりますが、そのほとんどが同じ録音家「Daspyknows」氏によるもの。先週のロジャー・ウォーターズの他、今週同時リリースのスティーヴ・ウィンウッドやエリック・クラプトンのプレス盤『DEFINITIVE HYDE PARK 2018』もすべて姉妹作なのです。
クラプトンが「DEFINITIVE」と題されてプレス化されている事からもお察しいただけると思いますが、この録音家はまさに現代の名手。名機「Schopes MK41」の使い手で、２年前の“DESERT TRIP 2016”で各バンドのベスト録音を連発して一気に世界の注目を集めた人物です。アメリカ録音が多いので米国人と言われていますが、恐らく記念碑コンサートを記録すべく渡英。本作のサウンドも氏の名声を高めこそすれ、貶めることのない素晴らしさ。どのアーティストの録音もすべてオンな間近サウンドでしたが、実際には本作がもっとも近く、10メートルそこそこの直近席からの録音。野外フェスならではの反響ゼロのクリアも絶品の名録音なのです。
その美麗サウンドで描かれるのがメモリアルなポール最後の英国ステージ。セットは“THE FAREWELL TOUR”の基本に準じたもので、デビューから半世紀を超えるキャリアを集大成。近年のツアーでも定番となっている曲が軸となっていますが、そこに散りばめられているのが９月リリース予定の『IN THE BLUE LIGHT』ナンバー。ポール曰く「過去に発表されつつも見過ごされてしまった曲」を再アレンジでリ・レコーディングしたアルバムで、本作でも「Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War」「Can’t Run But」「Questions for the Angels」を披露しているのです。「Questions for the Angels」は昨年も演奏していましたが、「Can’t Run But」がレギュラーセット入りするのは５年ぶり、「Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War」に至っては34年ぶりとなる復活です。

TOM & JERRYがデビュー曲「Hey, Schoolgirl」をヒットさせてから60年。一度はポールが「最後のステージ」と決めたのがハイドパークでした。その後、母国アメリカの日程が入ったために最後ではなくなったものの、海外公演としては間違いなく最後。そのメモリアル極まりないステージを現代の名手が腕に寄りをかけて完全記録した大傑作です。オーディエンス録音で臨みうる最高のサウンドであり、オーディエンスだからこその体験感に溢れた１本。９月22日のラスト・ショウまでもう間近。どうぞ、本作で二度とはない”今”を噛みしめてください。
