そして改めて1972年の夏、ウイングスは本格的なツアーに出る事になる。これが正式な初のツアーとなる。このツアーは欧州各国をまわるというもので、7月と8月に2クールに分けて行なわれた。ここで着目すべきは本国であるイギリスが含まれていないことだろう。ビートルズ解散前後からポールに対して辛辣なイギリスのメディアを嫌い、敢えて批評の緩い欧州を選んだのである。初めてのツアーで酷評を受ければバンドは自信を失くし萎縮してしまうだろうとの考えもあっただろう。何故ならバンドの力量はプロであるポール自身が一番良く知っていたはず。現在残されている1972年欧州ツアーの音源を聴く限り、バンドの方向性が定まっていないのはもちろん、オリジナル曲も弱く、「My Love」以外にヒット曲もなく、何よりリンダを含むバンドの演奏技量がおそらくポールが求めたであろう水準に達していない。イギリスでコンサートを行なう前に欧州で力試しといったところだろう。

元々ウイングスの目的はビートルズ時代に放棄したライヴ活動を行なうためのものであり、ポールは短期間でこのバンドを成長させねばならない。ツアーと平行してレコーディングも精力的に行なわれた。かつての仲間が積極的にアルバムをリリース、特にジョージが3枚組などの大作をリリースしている状況を意識したのかどうか知らないが、この時期、ポールはウイングスの次のアルバムとして2枚組を考えていた。実際のライブではそれら収録予定の曲が数多くライヴでも演奏されている。歴史的に未発表の曲もあるが、MCでは「次のアルバムの曲」と紹介しているように、この時期のポールは新たな挑戦に情熱を傾けていたのである。しかし前作『WINGS WILD LIFE』がセールス的に不発に終わり順風な出航とはならなかったため、ポールは妥協を強いられることになる。まずバンド名に自分の名前を冠する事。これにより「WINGS」が「PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS」と変えられた。そして当初2枚組の予定だったものが、シングル・アルバムに凝縮を余儀なくされた。レコード会社もリスクをとれなかったのだ。その結果生まれたのが『RED ROSE SPEEDWAY』である。このアルバムは現在でもポールの最高傑作のひとつとして挙げられており、「My Love」が全米ナンバー１ヒットを記録、「Yesterday」以来の名曲と称えられた他、アビーロードを彷彿とさせる後半のメドレーなど、セールス的にも前作を大きく上回った。そしてウイングス、正式にはポール・マッカートニー＆ウイングスは、このアルバムをリリース直後から再びツアーに出る事となるのである。

ウイングスがデビューしてから、しばらくはマスコミが辛口の英国を敢えて忌避していたが、バンドをもう一段上のレベルに引き上げるにはエンターテイメント市場規模の大きなイギリスでの成功は不可避である。ちょうどビートルズがリバプール、ロンドン、アメリカと順を追って大きくステップ・アップしていったように、イギリスでの成功、それも局地的なものではなくロンドンで成功する必要があった。この時点でアルバムは2枚のみだが、オリジナル曲は数多く揃っている。ヒット曲もある。何よりバンドにとってイギリスでの成功は通らざるを得ない道程である。そんな中、1973年5月から行なわれたのがアルバム『RED ROSE SPEEDWAY』に伴う初のイギリス国内ツアーであった。あくまで国内ツアーということで規模は小さく15公演のみ。セットリストも1時間強と短いものであった。それでもアルバムの他、映画のテーマ曲「死ぬのは奴らだ」を始め多彩な楽曲群、その他「おらが村の英雄」ポールをビートルズ時代以来久しぶりにステージで見る事が出来るというので、各地で大盛況だったようである。ツアーは基本的に1都市1公演で、例外的にマンチェスターでは二日間行われている。こでツアー日程を確認してみよう。

短期UKツアーにおいて、基本的には1都市1日の日程で、都市によって昼夜公演が組まれた。まるで田中角栄の選挙戦略のように地方から攻めて中央に至る日程であった。本作は、その中でも極初期の日程、初登場となるツアー二日目の1973年5月12日オクスフォード公演を収録している。まだツアー初期段階で、アルバム『RED ROSE SPEEDWAY』の曲を演奏するのも数度目という初々しい演奏。「Big Barn Bed」や「When The Night」などは今後も二度と演奏することがないであろう、このツアーのみのレア曲。「Live And Let Die」や「Hi Hi Hi」は現在でもポールのステージで演奏されているコンサートのハイライトであるが、エンディングの締め方を含め、約50年前のアレンジの違いを楽しんで欲しい。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
