「JAMES PAUL McCARTNEY」は初期ウイングスを映像で残したものとして貴重な映像記録である。まず最初に1973年4月16日にアメリカで放送され、その後、少し遅れて5月10日イギリスで放送されている。監督は音楽番組を数多く手がけてきたドワイト・ヘミオン。映画監督ではなく、テレビ畑の人を起用するところに、この番組の性格が表れているといってよいだろう。ビートルズ関連のテレビ特番としてはマジカル・ミステリー・ツアー以来の企画となった。

番組の詳細は既にご存知だとは思うので、改めてここで書くまでもあるまい。貴重な初期ウイングスの映像が盛りだくさんで非常に見応えのある、ファン必見の内容である。それどころか、動く1973年当時のウイングスの姿は感動的ですらある。しかも「Big Barn Bed」の演奏する映像が残されている唯一のものであり、リンダが撮影している横でポールがアコギで演奏するシーンでは、これもまた唯一の演奏シーンかつライヴ・テイクである「Heart Of The Country」が収録されている。さらに、おそらく当時のファンは狂喜したであろう「ミッシェル」や「イエスタディ」といったビートルズの曲まで演奏するサービス具合。始動したてのウイングスの魅力が余すところなく収録されている。そして、本作の特長は、画質が大幅にアップしている点である。従来の画面と比較すると、暗く粗い映像が明るく鮮明になっているのが比較するとわかる。もちろん70年代初頭の映像で、現代のものと比べるべくもないが、現在入手できる中では最も高画質のものであるといえる。

さらに、通常このような番組や映画は、実際のリアルタイムの音声とは別に、音声のみ別録して後から被せるという作業を施す。例えば映画『Back To The Future』の「JONNY B GOODE」のシーンでは、実際に歌っているのはマイケル・J・フォックスではないというふうに。本作のCDは、このような、JAMES PAUL McCARTNEYのためのリハーサル、アウトテイクの音声を収録している。同期する映像が残されているのかどうかは不明だが、音声のみとはいえこのようなアウトテイクが存在することに驚く。ポールがアコギを弾いているところをリンダが撮影しているシーンがメインであるが、本編では未使用の曲が数多く収録されているところが素晴らしい。「Take Your Time」は最初リンダが歌い、同じ曲をポールが歌う短いながら未発表曲である。「Mama’s Little Girl」と「Country Dreamer」も本編では未使用の曲である。「Country Dreamer」をライヴ演奏した記録はなく、アコギだけとはいえ、おそらくこれが唯一のものであろう。

さらに驚くのは「Love Is Long」を演奏している点である。曲名を聞いてもピンとこないかもしれないが、アルバム『RAM』収録の「Long Haired Lady」の後半部分なのである。つまりこの曲は2つの曲をくっつけて作られた、その後半部分が「Love Is Long」と題されて単独でここで演奏されているのである。シンプルながらポールのヴォーカルにリンダがコーラスを入れている非常に美しい、これだけずっと聴いていたい気にさせられる素晴らしいものである。さらに珍しいのはアコギのみで「Hands Of Love」を演奏している点であろう。お遊び程度の短い演奏ながら、『RED ROSE SPEEDWAY』の最後のメドレーの一曲をこのように演奏している点、非常に興味深い。

続いて「Gotta Sing Gotta Dance」のシーンのイントロを何度もリハーサルをしている様子が収録されている。左右で男女異なる衣装を来たダンサーが躍るシーンの導入部分である。ポールの口笛から始まり、ピアノで静かに歌いだす場面、あのシーンだけにこれだけのリハーサルが重ねられていることに驚く。それは続く「Live And Let Die」のリハーサルも同じである。ここでは映画館でポールとリンダがポップコーンを食べているシーンに被せられるナレーションのリハーサルが収録されている。

今まで幾度となくリリースがなされてきたテレビ・スペシャル「JAMES PAUL McCARTNEY」の決定盤が本作になるであろう。映像は従来のものよりも画質が向上しており、音源では撮影に同期させる音声のアウトテイクを収録している。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。
