The dawn of the 1980s began with the arrest of Paul in Japan. When I was watching the movement of Paul in the 1980s, I felt like seeking a partner that always equaled myself and gave me stimulation. ところが1984年に発表された『GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROAD STREET』は、一転駄作のレッテルを貼られている。個人的には大好きなアルバムなのだが、映画のサントラという性格上、過去のセルフカバーがほとんどを占め、新曲は数曲にとどまっていたことも評価が低い遠因となっている。当時「FM fan」という雑誌があり、この映画の特集があった。その中で名前は失念したが、日本のミュージシャンが、「サージェント・ペパーズを作った同じ人が、なぜあのようなくだらない映画を作るのだろう」と発言している。確かに映画は夢オチという「ハイスクール奇面組かよ！」とハリセンで叩きたくなる他愛ないものだったが、こと新曲に関しては非常に優れた楽曲が揃っていた。もう少し評価されてもよいのではと思っている。

続いて発表されたのが1986年『PRESS TO PLAY』である。名曲揃いにも拘わらず、これも世間的には評価が低いアルバムで、セールス的にも失敗に終わっている。ただ注目すべきは、このアルバムでもパートナーを求めて共作させている点である。前2作の共作者とはかなり格落ちだが、エリック・スチュワートである。何も彼が悪いとは言わないが、やはりポールのパートナーとしては力量不足だったかもしれない。しかし「FOOTPRINTS」といい「ONLY LOVE REMAINS」といい、「STRANGLEHOLD」といい、これもまた、もう少し評価されてもよいのではと思っている。

80年代のポールの動きを見ていると、常に自分と対等になって刺激を与えてくれるパートナーを求めているような感じであった。実績あるポールのことだから、ピンで自信を持ってやってもらいたいというが、そこは本人が自覚的に不足している部分を補おうという表れであろう。『PRESS TO PLAY』の不評からしばらく、ポールは沈黙期間に入る。そんな中リリースされたのがベスト盤『ALL THE BEST』である。ジャケット写真では、短く借り上げた髪、いくぶん皺が目立つ45歳のポールがにっこり笑っている。『ALL THE BEST』のジャケット写真は、年月の流れと共に、もうビートルズやウイングスの時代には戻れない、青年期を過ぎた成熟した、否定的な意味ではなく、中年期以降という新しい時代に入ったポールを感じずにはいられなかった。『ALL THE BEST』には新曲として「ONECE UPON A LONG AGO」が収録されている。これが唯一の新曲である。そしてこの曲のプロモ・ビデオでは、リンダはもちろんのこと、ドラムスにはクリス・ウィッテンの姿を見る事ができる。沈黙期間にあったこの時期に、後のワールド・ツアーのメンバーが既に参加している点、プリンス・トラストで啓発されたライヴ活動への布石が徐々に打たれていたという意図が垣間見れる。

1989年に発表されたアルバム『FLOWERS IN THE DIRT』は、古くからのファンにとっては意識の中では最近のアルバムに分類されるであろうが、既にビートルズの歴史の一部となっている。2017年現在リリースから30年弱が経過しようとしている。おそらくこの時期からポールは再び10年ぶりのツアーを念頭に置いていたに違いない。そのためのバンド、そのためのアルバムが必要であった。それもただのアルバムではなく、ツアーを成功に導くヒット作を必要としていたはずである。『PRESS TO PLAY』ではツアーに出ることは困難だったのである。そこで従来の例に漏れず、自分と対等もしくは、意見をしてくれるパートナーを求めた。そこで白羽の矢が立ったのがエルヴィス・コステロであった。コステロはかつてビートルズ・ファン・クラブに入っていたくらいのポール・ファンであり、ポールに対し敬意もある。しかし一方では、少し毒舌過ぎるくらいポールに意見できるカルトな人気と実績と性格をも持ち合わせていた。方向性を見失いつつあった80年代のポールが再出発するパートナーとしては申し分ない相手であった。

ポールとコステロの共同作業の結果、数多くの楽曲が生まれている。それらは『FLOWERS IN THE DIRT』と、コステロの当時の最新アルバム『SPIKE』に分散され収録された。なので曲によっては同じ曲でもポール・バージョンとコステロ・バージョンがあったりする。また収録しきれなかった曲のいくつかは『OFF THE GROUND』に流用されている。また従来のコラボ企画同様、「YOU WANT HER TOO」ではお互いがヴォーカルをとるデュエットとなっている。セールス的には大ヒットとまではいかなかったものの、このアルバムに伴うポールにとって10年ぶりのツアーが行なわれたこともあり、ファンにとっては印象強いアルバムとなっている。本作は、この『FLOWERS IN THE DIRT』のセッション音源をディスク6枚に渡って収録した、魂のこもったタイトルである。アルバム収録曲のみならず、同時期にレコーディングされた未発表曲やシングルのみの曲など、初登場音源を含む集大成となっている。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。スリップケース付。
