【来日公演の歴史】

リンダが死去に前後して活動を休止していたポールでしたが、現場復帰の契機となったのがアルバム「ドライヴィング・レイン」でした。このアルバムのリリースに伴って2002年アメリカからツアーを再開したのです。既に前回のツアーから9年が経過し、また同年代で現役で大規模なツアーを行なっているアーティストがほとんどいなかったことから、もはやツアーを行なうことがなく、このまま静かにレコーディング・アーティストの道を歩むのかと思われていた矢先にツアーが発表になったのです。そして「ドライヴィング・レイン」のレコーディング・メンバーが、そのままポールのツアーに同行するバンドとなり、このチームはポールのキャリアで最も長く、現在に至るまで続いているバンドとなります。そして2002年から、ほぼ毎年のようにツアーを行ない、2015年現在もツアーを続行中という、長期に渡って軸足をコンサート活動に移すことになります。
その間、2002年に5度目の来日公演を果たします。この時は東京3回大阪2回というもので、9年ぶりということもあって、かなり大々的にプロモーションが行なわれました。しかし、前述のように、2002年以降、ほぼ毎年のようにツアーが行なわれましたが、なぜか日本公演は2002年以降、組まれることがありませんでした。そして9年ぶりの来日の後、さらに11年ぶりに行なわれたのが記憶に新しい2013年のOUT THERE TOURでした。世界各国でのコンサートが話題となっている中、日本だけが取り残された感がありましたが、待望の来日公演であること、そしてポールとバンドの演奏が熟練した素晴らしい出来であったことで、この年の話題をさらったものでした。
その2013年の来日公演の直後から、再来日の噂がそこはかとなく流れていましたが、なんと半年後に再度来日することが発表になったのです。11年ぶりの来日の次は半年ぶりの来日という、何とも不思議なスパンでの来日公演の発表でした。実はポールは2013年の来日の際、屋外会場を強く希望していたということですが、諸般の事情により従来通りドーム球場が会場となりました。そのリベンジというわけではないでしょうが、2014年の来日公演は、今まで来日のたびに会場となっていたドーム球場ではなく、取り壊しが決まっていた国立競技場と長居競技場という、巨大屋外スタジアムが選ばれました。そして驚いたことに1966年以来の武道館公演が追加で発表になったのです。しかし、残念ながら、ご存じの通りポールの急病により、全公演が中止となってしまいました。

日本武道館・・・日本人にとって、これほど特別な思い入れのある会場はないでしょう。法隆寺の夢殿をモデルに東京オリンピックの会場として建設され、皇居に連なる立地といい、武道の殿堂としての歴史を刻む由緒ある会場で、特にビートルズファンにとっては聖地とも言える場所です。昭和41年のビートルズ来日公演の会場となったことを嚆矢として、チープトリック、クラプトン、ディランなど、数多くの海外アーティストがライヴを行ない、また名演の数々は「ライヴ・アット・ブドーカン」としてリリースされるなど、世界的にも有名な会場です。その場所で、ポール・マッカートニーがビートルズ以来、約半世紀ぶりに同じステージに立つ。この事実に興奮しないファンはいないでしょう。実際に大阪や東京ドームのコンサートが霞むくらい、今回は話題は武道館に集中しました。チケットが10万円という破格の値段なら、座席は完全抽選という前例のないもので、いかにこの武道館公演が特別なものだったかが伺えます。後述しますが、セットリストも武道館ならではのもので、これはポール本人も武道館という会場が持つ意味合いを理解していた何よりの証拠ではないでしょうか。

武道館公演の前に、大阪で1公演、東京で3公演を既に終えていましたが、こと武道館に限ってはセットリストが通常とは異なるとされており、ファンの間では期待が高まっていました。1曲目は何なのか、ビートルズの武道館コンサートを意識したセットリストになるのか、様々な思惑が入り乱れて迎えた武道館公演。オープニングはなんと「キャントバイミーラブ」でした。登場と同時におもむろにマイクに向かって歌い出し、最初からアクセル全開といった素晴らしいオープニング。そして、セットリストがまさに武道館ならではの特別セットだということを確信したオープニングでした。ドーム公演ではセットリストはほぼ固定で、次に何を演奏するかネタバレしているコンサートでしたが、こと武道館に関して言えば、次にどんな曲を演奏するのか予測できない、まさにリアルタイムでドキドキできる特別なコンサートだったのです。4曲目には日本初披露となる「ワンアフター909」が飛び出し、アンコールでは「バースディ」を演奏するなど、まさに武道館ならではのセットリスト。このように通常セットと異なるコンサートは今まで類をみないもので、ツアーの一環としてこのような特別コンサートを行なうこと自体が異例のこと。ポールもまた、この武道館に特別な思い入れがあるのかと改めて思わされます。そして今回何といっても話題となったのは、武道館が世界初公開となった「アナザーガール」です。この場に臨場したファンだけが世界に先駆けて聴くことの出来た、新たに採り上げるビートルズ・ナンバー。もちろんビートルズ時代でもライヴ演奏したことがなく、発表から半世紀を経て初めてステージで演奏された特別な曲です。まだ演奏が慣れていないのか、ポールがしきりに手元を見ながらベースを弾いていたのが印象的でした。ちなみにビートルズとして当時演奏された曲で、今回も再び演奏されたのは「ペイパーバック・ライター」と「イエスタディ」の2曲のみ。しかも前者は後半にギターソロが加えられた近年のアレンジで、後者はアコースティックとウィックスが奏でるキーボードのみと、およそビートルズ時代とは異なる形態で演奏されました。
本作のディスク１と2に、この武道館コンサートを超高音質ステレオ・サウンドボードで収録しています。導入部分の「The End」の会場SEからポール登場、そして始まるコンサート・・・当日の興奮そのままに再現してくれます。もちろん今回の収録に当たって新たに24bitデジタル・リマスタリングを行ない、そこからCD規格にダウンサイジングを行なっていますので、一切の音の劣化がなく、また単なる映像由来の音源ではなく、より豊潤で素晴らしい音にグレードアップしているのが特長です。元々映像付随そのままの音は、マスタリングが映像に主眼を置いたもので、当初より平坦であまり評判の良いものではありませんでした。そこで本作は時間をかけてスタジオにて改めて音を磨き、ウォーミーかつナチュラルなオリジナルの空気を損ねることなく、よりダイレクトでオンな音像を再構築すべく丁寧にリマスタリングが施されています。その効果たるや、音の波形で見ても違いは明らかで、高音からズシンと響く重低音まで、元の音源に含まれていた音成分を最大限に引き出し、まるで別物のように素晴らしい仕上がりとなっています。おそらく同系統のタイトルが数多くリリースされると思いますが、それらとは一線を画す、まさに音単体で鑑賞するに相応しい出来栄えとなっています。この素晴らしき音質、音色の差は、ぜひ聴き比べていただきたいと思います。
またディスク2の最後に、ボーナストラックとして、オーディエンス音源による「New」が2テイク収録されています。最初のテイクは途中でポールがミスをしてしまい、完奏こそするものの、これをそのまま放送するのは憚られたのでしょう、曲途中から再度「補填ピース」のために演奏し直したのです。それがテイク２です。当日の武道館では、この2曲が続けて演奏されましたが、サウンドボード音源ではこの2テイクを編集により、ミスなく通して演奏したものとなっています。本作ではドキュメント性を重視して、高音質オーディエンス録音により、唯一放送では編集が行なわれていた「New」を未編集のまま2テイクここに収録しています。
【サウンドチェック】
日本公演中、唯一アリーナクラスの会場であることと、過去においてこのバンドでは初めて演奏する場所ということで、当日は入念なサウンドチェックが行なわれました。通常のVIPチケット購入者を対象としたサウンドチェックがおよそ1時間に満たないくらいなのに対し、武道館はポール来場前に1時間強、ポールが参加して1時間強と、2時間半に渡って各楽器を細かくチェック。またコンサートは撮影が行なわれるとあって、客を入れずにバンド及び関係者のみでの真剣そのもののサウンドチェックが行なわれたのです。
ディスク3に相当する部分では、まだポールが会場入りしておらず、ウィックスとエイブの二人とスタッフによる楽器の調整と音出し。主にキーボードに主眼を置いてサウンドチェックがなされている様子を収録しています。コンサートでは演奏されなかった新曲「Hope For The Future」を繰り返し演奏していたり、結局日本公演で演奏されなかった「Penny Lane」などを繰り返し演奏しているのです。途中からラスティとブライアンが到着し、サウンドチェックに参加します。ポール以外のバンドメンバー4人によるサウンドチェックです。
そしてディスク4にはポールが到着後のサウンドチェックが収録されています。充分にバンドが暖まり楽器の調整もほぼ固まり、ボスの確認をとるだけの状態でポールが登場、会場にいる人たちに挨拶をします。この日は京セラドームや東京ドームと異なり一般には公開しないサウンドチェックで、その分エンターテイメント性を排除し、同じ曲を何度も繰り返し演奏したりと、リハーサルを兼ねたサウンドチェックが入念に行なわれています。「Matchbox」や「Honey Don’t」などオールディーズ・ナンバーで始めるのは通常の公開サウンドチェック同様ですが、特に入念に行なわれているのが「ガット・トゥ・ゲット・ユー・イントゥ・マイ・ライフ」「ペニーレイン」「アナザーガール」の3曲です。「～イントゥ・マイ・ライフ」は武道館コンサート本編で久しぶりに演奏するということで入念な確認が行なわれたのでしょう。そして同様に「アナザーガール」はこの武道館コンサート本編の目玉となるライヴ初演ということで、これまた入念に何度も繰り返し最終確認が行なわれています。
サウンドチェックは基本的に非公開だったのですが、ここで収録されているのはIEM録音と言われるもので、ポールの曲間のおしゃべりはもちろん、各メンバーとの会話、スタッフへの指示などが鮮明に、生々しく耳元で聞こえるサウンドボード音源なのです。もちろん受信不良のようなノイズもなく、約2時間半に渡って完全収録されているのです。しかもIEM録音特有の貧弱なか細い機械的な音ではなく、深味と厚みのある骨太の音で収録されているのも、他の類似タイトルと一線を画すところ。
さらにピカデリーの既発盤「JUST ONE NIGHT AT JUDO ARENA」と異なる点は、本作がステレオ音源で収録されている点です。音の広がりや分離の良さなど、既発のモノラルではなく、ステレオIEMサウンドボードで収録している点、ぜひ聴き比べていただけたらと思います。
【EXTRA DISC】
次にディスク5に相当するエキストラ・ディスクについてです。コンサートにおいて印象的だったのは、開演前に会場にポールのソロやウイングス時代の曲をサンプリングしたBGMがスクリーン映像と共に流されていたことです。そしてカバー曲による「The End」がコンサート開始の合図。客電が落ち、会場が暗転すると同時に湧き上がる歓声。そして青色のスポットに照らされたポールが登場し、軽く挨拶をして始まる非現実世界。トラック1の「DJ Sampling Music」は、このオープニングに使用されたBGMをサウンドボードで収録しています。もちろん2013年とは構成が異なる、2015年ツアー用に作られた新しいDJサンプリング。特に印象強いのは、“カミダズ、カミダズ、カミダズ・・・”という「心のラブソング」のリズムに被って始まる「テンポラリー・セクレタリー」、さらに再び“カミダズ、カミダズ、カミダズ・・・”とループし、その後に「The End」繋がる部分です。これを聴いただけで、当日のコンサートの胸騒ぐドキドキ感がよみがえってくることでしょう。もちろんサウンドボード音源にして、最後まで歓声が被らないクリーン・バージョンです。
続いて、これはドキュメントとして収録されているのですが、オーディエンス録音にて、武道館入場からコンサート開始までの会場の様子が収録されています。入場を促す係員の様子、着座してからの会場内のざわめき。主催者の紹介や会場内での注意事項を告げるアナウンスメント。そして自然発生的に始まる客席のウェーブ。その間もずっと流れている会場内のBGM。音楽的には特筆すべきものではありませんが、当日のドキュメントとしては最高の収録となっています。あの日、会場に臨場した人が想い出として楽しめることはもちろんのこと、残念ながら行けなかった方も、疑似体験としてコンサート開始前のドキドキを感じることが出来る雰囲気満点の音源です。
さらに後半は、日本公演に向けたポールによるメッセージが収録されています。最初は結果的に中止となった2014年来日へ向けてのメッセージを収録。「マタアイマショウ」という日本語と共に、日本公演パート2をやるよというメッセージです。さらに武道館公演に向けてのメッセージを2種収録。東京と大阪のスタジアム公演がソールドアウトになった謝辞に加え、武道館公演が追加されたこと、ポール自身が武道館公演に際し非常に興奮しているといったことを本人が自分の口で語っています。しかしながら、ご存知の通り体調不良により、2014年の来日公演は全て中止になってしまいました。その2014年の来日公演がキャンセルされたことを伝える海外メディアのレポートも3種収録しています。
そして2015年の来日公演に向けて新たに収録されたメッセージを2種収録しています。最初のメッセージはバンド全員によるもので、リハーサルを終えて今から日本のファンに会いに行くよというメッセージ。ポール単独のメッセージでは、2013年の日本公演が最高のものであったこと、そして2014年の日本公演が中止になったことを大変申し訳なく思っていること、改めて2015年に日本に行くことを楽しみにしているという内容です。そして最後にファンからの質問に答える形で、日本はファンも気候も素晴らしく、日本に行く理由は数多くある旨を語っています。
【インナー】
本作は約半世紀ぶりの歴史的なポールマッカートニーによる武道館公演ということで、当日の想い出をなるべく残そうという想いが込められており、それは音源だけでなく、視覚的な資料として全セットに6面見開きのインナーが封入されています。当日の未発表写真をふんだんに使用し、武道館の座席表、武道館のチケット、武道館公演を伝えるチラシ、当日売られていたＴシャツやキーホルダー、タオルなどのグッズの写真も掲載されています。ぜひ当日の雰囲気を伝える視聴の補助としていただければと思っています。
また、それとは別に、当日は座席に遠隔操作で色が変わるライトが置いてありました。このライトは「レットイットビー」や「ヘイジュード」などで効果的に使用され、客席が大きな日の丸とユニオンジャックに蛍光した写真を見た方も多いでしょう。そのライトには「日本のファンの皆様へ。ポールマッカートニーさんご本人へは内緒の演出です」で始まる注意書きが添えられていました。その注意書きを復刻して、これもまた封入されています。まさに当日、臨場した方が手にしたものと同じものです。裏面は「半世紀ぶりに、日本武道館に立つ！」という印象的な新聞広告のデザインになっています。
【BACK TO BUDOKAN 2015】
本作は、2015年の来日公演のハイライトである最終日、伝説となるであろう武道館公演を、サウンドボードで収録。サウンドチェック、オープニングDJミュージックなどもサウンドボードで収録。さらに当日の会場の雰囲気を楽しめるドキュメントやポール自身による日本のファンへのメッセージ、さらに当日の写真やメモラビリアが掲載されたインナーなどが封入され、2015年来日公演のエッセンスが凝縮された大切なメモリアルとなるタイトルに仕上がっています。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。スリップケース付。
