One of the features of FRESHEN UP TOUR that began in 2018 is the addition of new songs to the repertoire from the new album “EGYPT STATION”. このようにカナダで4公演を行なった後、アメリカはテキサス州オースティンの2公演を経て日本にやってくることになる。このオースティンでの2公演は「AUSTIN CITY LIMITS MUSIC FESTIVAL」と題したフェスティバルへの出演である。フェスティバルといっても1990年のような短縮されたセットリストではなく、通常と同じ2時間強のフル・コンサートであり、ツアーの一環として位置付けられている。本作は、このオースティン・シティ・ミュージック・フェスの初日2018年10月5日のコンサートを、サウンドボードとプロショットで完全収録したタイトルである。

2018年から始まったFRESHEN UP TOURにおける特徴として、ニューアルバム『EGYPT STATION』から新曲をレパートリーに加えている点が挙げられる。しかもコンサート序盤に「Who Cares」「Come On To Me」の2曲、そして中盤に「Fuh You」を演奏している。いずれもコンサートで演奏する事を念頭に置いた楽曲と思われ、ステージ構成の重要なアクセントとなっている。またこのツアーで初演となるのが「From Me To You」である。極初期のビートルズの代表曲のひとつであり、アコースティック・コーナーの1曲として採り上げられている。その他、セットリストの曲目だけ見ると、ツアータイトルに反しフレッシュな選曲はなく、これまでも演奏されてきた曲目が並んでいる。このツアーの特徴を挙げるとしたら、曲目よりもむしろ、アレンジに着目すべきであろう。

従来のポールのステージと大きく異なる点は、ブラス・セクションが加わった点にある。これまで70年代のウイングスを除くと、基本的にポールのステージにバンド・メンバー以外が演奏に加わることはなかった。もちろんバグ・パイプ楽団が登壇したり、ゲストが演奏する場面もなかったわけではない。しかしツアーに帯同して毎夜コンサートの演出として参加したミュージシャンはいない。今回初めて、ブラス・セクションがバンドに加わったのである。それまでウィックスが奏でるキーボードで代用されていた音が、本物の楽器で演奏される点において、敢えてアレンジもそれを活かすものとなっている。

ブラス・セクションは「Letting Go」で初めて姿を現す。しかもステージ上ではなく、客席の中に並んだメンバーが突如奏でるサプライズ演出で、観客は大いに盛り上がっている。同曲は後半に短いブラス・ソロをブレイクに挿入し、一層際立つアレンジとなっている。新曲「Come On To Me」でも大々的にフューチャーされている。その他ブラス・セクションは「Let ‘Em In」や「Lady Madonna」「Ob La Di Ob La Da」「Live And Let Die」「Hey Jude」、そして最後のアビーロード・メドレーにおいても重要な役割を果たしている。本作で聴くことの出来る、また映像で視認できるブラス・セクションの迫力、やはり生音は違うなと改めて感じさせられる。同じ曲であっても、これほどこれ程異なるものかと思わせられる。また、この日は「Mr.Kite」の前に、先日逝去したジェフ・エマリックに捧げる旨が告げられている。

CD部分は、2018年10月5日オースティン・フェスをサウンドボードで完全収録している。同じサウンドボードでもかなり質の良いもので、きっちり分離したステレオ感、響く重低音、そして伸びのある高音部、さらにブラス・セクションの迫力、クリアなボーカルといい、バランスのとれた非常に優れたサウンドボード音源となっている。またディスク2の最後にはボーナストラックとして、コンサートの開演前に流されたBGMを収録している。ポールの楽曲をリミックスしたコンサートのために編集されたもので、いくばくか雰囲気なりとも感じてもらえたらと思う。

DVDは2018年10月5日オースティン・フェスをプロショットで完全収録している。今までブラス・セクションが入っていたのは知られていたが、どのような配置で、どのような形で演奏されていたのか、この映像を見て頂ければわかるかと思う。カメラワークも秀逸で、フェスだけに屋外の大観衆を前に行なわれたコンサートの魅力を臨場感あふるる迫力の映像で楽しむ事が出来る。

2018年10月5日テキサス州で行なわれたフル・コンサートを、サウンドボードとプロショットで完全収録。音質といい、画質といい、そして内容といい、FRESHEN UP TOURの代表作となることは間違いないだろう。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
