ポール・マッカートニーは2018年に入り、6月と7月にリバプールとロンドンでウォーム・アップ的にギグを行なっている。そして2018年9月7日にはニューヨークのグランド・セントラル駅の特設ステージにおいて特別ライブ。セットリストは通常より簡略化されたものながら、 ポールのミュージシャンとしての衰えは感じられず、 このメンバーになってからバンドも既に16年目に突入するが、全員が素晴らしいパフォーマンスを行なっている。そしていよいよ、前回のONE ON ONE TOURを改め、FRESHEN UP TOURと題して再び新たなツアーに出る事を発表。 このツアーは2018年9月カナダを皮切りに、フェスティバル出演を含み、2019年にはアメリカのスケジュールまで決まっている。 そして間をおかず2018年、このFRESHEN UP TOURの一環として来日公演が行なわれた。 24歳で初来日してから半世紀以上、こうして76歳になって尚、遠く日本において大規模なスタジアム・コンサートを行なっているなど、本人ですら予想だにしなかったであろう。日程は下記の通り。

今回は初の両国国技館、そして1980年ウイングスが予定していたものの中止となった名古屋公演が組まれているのが特徴である。前回3回だった東京ドーム公演は2回と回数が減ったものの、ドーム球場を何度も埋め尽くせる動員力のあるアーティストは、ポールくらいビッグネーム以外に不可能であろう。 本作は、その最終日2018年名古屋ドーム公演をサウンドチェックを含め完全収録している。

FRESHEN UP TOURにおける特徴として、ニューアルバム『EGYPT STATION』から新曲をレパートリーに加えている点が挙げられる。しかもコンサート序盤に「Who Cares」「Come On To Me」の2曲、そして中盤に「Fuh You」を演奏している。いずれもコンサートで演奏する事を念頭に置いた楽曲と思われ、ステージ構成の重要なアクセントとなっている。またこのツアーで初演となるのが「From Me To You」である。極初期のビートルズの代表曲のひとつであり、アコースティック・コーナーの1曲として採り上げられている。その他、セットリストの曲目だけ見ると、ツアータイトルに反しフレッシュな選曲はなく、これまでも演奏されてきた曲目が並んでいる。しかし、このツアーの特徴を挙げるとしたら、曲目よりもむしろ、アレンジに着目すべきであろう。

従来のポールのステージと大きく異なる点は、ブラス・セクションが加わった点にある。これまで70年代のウイングスを除くと、基本的にポールのステージにバンド・メンバー以外が演奏に加わることはなかった。もちろんバグ・パイプ楽団が登壇したり、ゲストが演奏する場面もなかったわけではない。しかしツアーに帯同して毎夜コンサートの演出として参加したミュージシャンはいない。今回初めて、ブラス・セクションがバンドに加わったのである。それまでウィックスが奏でるキーボードで代用されていた音が、本物の楽器で演奏される点において、敢えてアレンジもそれを活かすものとなっている。

ブラス・セクションは「Letting Go」で初めて姿を現す。しかもステージ上ではなく、客席の中に並んだメンバーが突如奏でるサプライズ演出で、観客は大いに盛り上がっている。同曲は後半に短いブラス・ソロをブレイクに挿入し、一層際立つアレンジとなっている。新曲「Come On To Me」でも大々的にフューチャーされている。その他ブラス・セクションは「Let ‘Em In」や「Lady Madonna」「Ob La Di Ob La Da」「Live And Let Die」「Hey Jude」、そして最後のアビーロード・メドレーにおいても重要な役割を果たしている。

また、アルバム『Egypt Station』に収録の「Back In Blazil」という曲には、「イチバン」という日本語が使われている。この曲を日本で初演するのではないかと前評判であったが、結果的には「Come On To Me」の冒頭にイントロとして加えられた。細かい点であるが、これもまた日本で初めて取り入れられたアレンジである。

【2018年11月8日ナゴヤドーム公演】
2018年来日公演最終日である。FRESHEN UP TOURの特徴を備えつつ、これまでにない大団円的な素晴らしいコンサートとなっている。全4回の2018年日本公演でこの日をベスト・パフォーマンスとする人も多いのではないか。ポールはその時々で最後の公演に余力を出し切る傾向にあり、そのためツアー最終日にリバプール公演が組まれることが多い。この名古屋公演の後はしばらくコンサートがないこともあり、非常に熱の入ったパフォーマンスとなっている。ポール自身もこの日が最終だという意識をもって臨んでおり、それは日本での滞在の素晴らしさを語るMCでも随所に伺い知ることが出来る。ここ数年、ほぼ毎年のように来日しているポールにとって、FAITHFULな日本のファンは強く心に刻まれていることだろう。そのような日本のファンの思いに応えるかのような、ポールの初の名古屋公演であった。

「A Hard Day’s Night」で開幕するのは同じだが、この日も2曲目の「Hi Hi Hi」が「Junior’s Farm」に差し替えられた。さらに「All My Loving」も「Can’t Buy Me Love」に、そして「Yesterday」が日本公演で唯一の「Birthday」に変更になっている。 そしてこの日もまたFRESHEN UP TOURにおいて2度目となる「Got To Get You Into My Life」が演奏されている。ホーンセクションが加わったことにより、かなり重厚で聴き応えのあるバージョンとなっているので、今後ツアーが進行するにあたってレギュラーで演奏されるのではないか。

ディスク3は当日の本番前に行なわれたサウンドチェックの音源である。本編では演奏することのないレアな曲やカバー曲を演奏してくれるVIPチケット用の公開サウンドチェック。この日のサウンドチェックもまた、VIPチケットが存在した三日間の内でベストともいえる内容となっている。久しぶりの「Save Us」はもちろん聴き所であるのだが、最大のウリは「Jet」であろう。毎回コンサートで盛り上がる楽曲であり、特に2004年ツアーではオープニングを飾ったポールの代表曲のひとつでありんがら、今回のツアーでは演奏されることなく、日本公演においても一度も演奏されていない。しかしこの日初めて、サウンドチェックであるものの初披露されたのである。曲自体はこれまで数えきれないくらい演奏されてきたため珍しくはないのだが、この日はホーンセクションが演奏に加わっている点において特筆される。イントロのジャージャッジャジャーからホーンが大々的に加わり、ウイングスのロック・ショウさながらの重厚な演奏となっている。この完成度の高さは、今後レギュラー・セットリストに加えられるのではないか。東京二日目の「Got To Get You Into My Life」といい、この「Jet」といい、ツアーが進化する過程において、その重要な転換が日本で行なわれたという事実を嬉しく思う。そして日本のファンの反応でその後のセットに組み入れるかどうかを判断するという、日本のファンを信頼している故の披露であろう。

2018年来日公演より、最終日11月8日ナゴヤドーム公演を超高音質で完全収録。2003年以降のポールのライブをリアルタイムで追いかけ、今回も、その時々の最新ツアーをいち早くハイ・クオリティでお届けしてきたピカデリー・サーカス・レーベルで揃えて頂ければ間違いないだろう。数多くのタイトルが今回もリリースされると思うが、いろいろと他と比べる必要もなく、決定盤として本作があればそれで良い。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
