【November 5, 2018, Both National Kokugikan Performances】
It is the third day of the performance in Japan in 2018. Originally it was only two days of Tokyo Dome and the Nagoya Dome, but later the two National Kokugikan performances were announced additionally. I was amazed at the Budokan performance in 2015 and 2017, but it is unbelievable that Paul is doing a concert at both countries’ Kokugikan. ポール・マッカートニーは2018年に入り、6月と7月にリバプールとロンドンでウォーム・アップ的にギグを行なっている。そして2018年9月7日にはニューヨークのグランド・セントラル駅の特設ステージにおいて特別ライブ。セットリストは通常より簡略化されたものながら、 ポールのミュージシャンとしての衰えは感じられず、このメンバーになってからバンドも既に16年目に突入するが、全員が素晴らしいパフォーマンスを行なっている。そしていよいよ、前回のONE ON ONE TOURを改め、FRESHEN UP TOURと題して再び新たなツアーに出る事を発表。 このツアーは2018年9月カナダを皮切りに、フェスティバル出演を含み、2019年にはアメリカのスケジュールまで決まっている。そして間をおかず2018年、このFRESHEN UP TOURの一環として来日公演が行なわれた。 24歳で初来日してから半世紀以上、こうして76歳になって尚、遠く日本において大規模なスタジアム・コンサートを行なっているなど、本人ですら予想だにしなかったであろう。日程は下記の通り。

今回は初の両国国技館、そして1980年ウイングスが予定していたものの中止となった名古屋公演が組まれているのが特徴である。前回3回だった東京ドーム公演は2回と回数が減ったものの、ドーム球場を何度も埋め尽くせる動員力のあるアーティストは、ポールくらいビッグネーム以外に不可能であろう。本作は、その初日、2018年東京ドーム公演初日をサウンドチェックを含め完全収録している。

FRESHEN UP TOURにおける特徴として、ニューアルバム『EGYPT STATION』から新曲をレパートリーに加えている点が挙げられる。しかもコンサート序盤に「Who Cares」「Come On To Me」の2曲、そして中盤に「Fuh You」を演奏している。いずれもコンサートで演奏する事を念頭に置いた楽曲と思われ、ステージ構成の重要なアクセントとなっている。またこのツアーで初演となるのが「From Me To You」である。極初期のビートルズの代表曲のひとつであり、アコースティック・コーナーの1曲として採り上げられている。その他、セットリストの曲目だけ見ると、ツアータイトルに反しフレッシュな選曲はなく、これまでも演奏されてきた曲目が並んでいる。しかし、このツアーの特徴を挙げるとしたら、曲目よりもむしろ、アレンジに着目すべきであろう。

従来のポールのステージと大きく異なる点は、ブラス・セクションが加わった点にある。これまで70年代のウイングスを除くと、基本的にポールのステージにバンド・メンバー以外が演奏に加わることはなかった。もちろんバグ・パイプ楽団が登壇したり、ゲストが演奏する場面もなかったわけではない。しかしツアーに帯同して毎夜コンサートの演出として参加したミュージシャンはいない。今回初めて、ブラス・セクションがバンドに加わったのである。それまでウィックスが奏でるキーボードで代用されていた音が、本物の楽器で演奏される点において、敢えてアレンジもそれを活かすものとなっている。

ブラス・セクションは「Letting Go」で初めて姿を現す。しかもステージ上ではなく、客席の中に並んだメンバーが突如奏でるサプライズ演出で、観客は大いに盛り上がっている。同曲は後半に短いブラス・ソロをブレイクに挿入し、一層際立つアレンジとなっている。新曲「Come On To Me」でも大々的にフューチャーされている。その他ブラス・セクションは「Let ‘Em In」や「Lady Madonna」「Ob La Di Ob La Da」「Live And Let Die」「Hey Jude」、そして最後のアビーロード・メドレーにおいても重要な役割を果たしている。

また、アルバム『Egypt Station』に収録の「Back In Blazil」という曲には、「イチバン」という日本語が使われている。この曲を日本で初演するのではないかと前評判であったが、結果的には「Come On To Me」の冒頭にイントロとして加えられた。細かい点であるが、これもまた日本で初めて取り入れられたアレンジである。

【2018年11月5日両国国技館公演】
2018年来日公演三日目である。当初は東京ドーム2日間と名古屋ドームのみの予定であったが、その後、この両国国技館公演が追加で発表されたのである。2015年と2017年の武道館公演にも驚かされたが、まさかポールが両国国技館でコンサートを行なうなど、 信じられない思いである。キャパは武道館より一回り小さく、公称でおよそ7000人である。2013年来日の際は福岡公演の折、大相撲九州場所を観戦し、懸賞金もつけるなど、好角家は言い過ぎだろうが、ポール自身非常に相撲に興味を持っているようである。もちろん両国国技館はその大相撲の会場でもある。 当日は升席もそのまま使用され、非常に近距離でポールのコンサートを楽しめるとあって満席、雰囲気だけでもと見切り席まで当日券として急遽販売されたほどの大盛況であった。場所が両国国技館だけあって、ポールは時折「ごっつぁんです」や相撲の懸賞金を受け取る際の手刀を真似るなど、終始機嫌が良い感じであった。 セットリストは通常のステージから数曲カットされたダイジェストなものであったが、演奏は非常に熱く、近年稀にみる素晴らしいものであった。

本作はその両国国技館公演を超高音質で完全収録している。最前列ではないものの、Aブロックの前方で収録された音像は周囲に耳障りな嬌声を発する人もおらず、また目立つ拍手もほとんどなく、非常にクリーンかつ近距離で収録されている。あの喧騒の国技館にあって奇蹟的な録音であると言える。この日のオーディエンス録音で本作を超えるものはあるまい。またボーナストラックとしてポール自身による今回の日本公演に向けてのメッセージ、さらに両国国技館公演が追加になった旨を伝えるメッセージなどを収録している。

この日はサウンドチェックは公開されなかったが、本作のディスク3は両国国技館のコンサートをスタンド正面から撮影されたDVDとなっている。1カメラの収録ながら非常に安定したショットで、ズームを駆使してコンサートを完全収録している点、当日のコンサートの様子が楽しめる。ピカデリー・サーカス・レーベルからは、両国国技館を4カメラで収録し編集されたプロショット顔負けのDVDが個別にリリースされているが、本作はそれとは別に、1カメラながらコンサートを完全収録したものとして、充分に楽しめるものとなっている。

2018年来日公演より、三日目11月5日両国国技館公演をアリーナ最前ブロックにて超高音質で完全収録。 これまでの来日公演において最高の音質で収録されている。2003年以降のポールのライブをリアルタイムで追いかけ、今回も、その時々の最新ツアーをいち早くハイ・クオリティでお届けしてきたピカデリー・サーカス・レーベルで揃えて頂ければ間違いないだろう。数多くのタイトルが今回もリリースされると思うが、いろいろと他と比べる必要もなく、決定盤として本作があればそれで良い。美しいピクチャー・ディスク仕様の永久保存がっちりプレス盤。日本語帯付。
