Paul McCartney’s 70’s almost overlaps his 30s. In the thirties who got talent and motivation burning hotly led the band called wings, flew fruitfully in the seventies. Meanwhile, although I did not come out on tour, I will do a live appearance with a single shot as it is. This work is a series of chronologically recorded miniature live performances that are not recorded in many Collector’s Items, spotlighting such single Paul’s live appearance. The first piece of this work includes one-off live from 1984 to 1990, TV appearance, radio appearances and so on.

【ASPEL & COMPANY】
On June 9, 1984, this will be the first public performance after the wings are dissolved. “I Lost My Little Girl” is a hoax song about to play with a jokes, the middle part to be added later is incomplete at this time, singing the title on a melody. 【THE TONIGHT SHOW】

【ASPEL & COMPANY】
1984年6月9日、これがウイングス解散後初めての人前での演奏となる。「I Lost My Little Girl」はおふざけで口ずさんだ程度の鼻歌で、後年加えられるミドル・パートがこの時点では未完成で、タイトルをメロディに乗せて歌うものである。テレビ司会者との会話の流れで自身初めて作曲した曲ということで披露したものである。そしてこの番組のエンディングでは、ピアノの演奏に乗せてバディ・ホリーの「That’ll Be The Day」をマイクを持ちながら、そう、ちょうど「Coming Up」のプロモ・フィルムのような形態で歌っている。女性が一緒に歌っているが、これは「ヤァ！ブロード・ストリート」で助演したトレイシー・ウルマンである。

【SOUTHBANK SHOW】
1984年10月14日に収録されたものである。ポールはギターだけで「For No One」を歌っている。途中フレンチホーンが入る箇所ではポールが自分でスキャットを入れて補っている。かなりしっかりした演奏で完奏している。この時期は映画「ヤァ！ブロードストリート」が公開されたこともあって、そのプロモーションを兼ねての出演。同映画でも演奏されたこの曲を披露したということだろう。ビートルズ時代を通して初めてのライヴ演奏である。後に2005年のツアーで正式にステージで採り上げられることになる。

【THE TONIGHT SHOW】
1984年10月23日に収録。ポールはギターを手に「Yesterday」のさわりだけを酔っぱらったふうにおどけて歌い、その後軽快に「You’re My Sunshine」に繋げている。軽いお遊び程度の演奏だが、この曲を歌っているのはこれのみである。意外やサウンドチェックその他で一切歌ったことがない貴重な曲、ライヴ・テイクである。

【LIVE AID】
1985年7月１3日、あの有名な歴史的ライヴ・エイドでの演奏である。この時ボブ・ゲルドフから出演を打診されたポールは、バンドを持っていないことを理由として一旦は断っているが、だったらピアノで「Let It Be」を演奏すればよいではないかというゲルドフの進言で出演を決断している。「Let It Be」という選曲はバンド不要でピアノだけで演奏できるという理由からであったのだ。当日は全世界に衛星中継がなされる中、トラブルにより曲の前半だけポールのヴォーカルがオフになっている。これはテレビの中だけでなく、実際の会場でも同様の症状が起きており、ピアノの音だけが鮮明に流れる中、ポールのヴォーカルがオフ・マイクでかすかにしか聴こえていない。途中2度歓声が沸く箇所がある。最初の歓声は、マイク・トラブルに気付いたスタッフがリペアをし、ポールのヴォーカルがオンになった瞬間である。そして2度目は、コーラスとしてボウイやピート・タウンゼントなどが登場した時である。ちなみにこの翌日、ポールはマイクがオフになった曲の前半をスタジオで録音し直している。この時はボブ・ゲルドフは一切の商品化を考えていないと述べていたが、ポールとしては何かの時のために録音しておいたのであろう。それは後にDVD化された時に活かされている。本作には、マイク・トラブルにより前半ヴォーカルがオフになったリアルタイムのテイクと、翌日再録したテイクの2つを収録している。再録テイクはきちんと最初から最後までヴォーカルが入っているので、これでは1度目の歓声の沸き上がりが不自然になるが、致し方あるまい。そしてこのイベントの最後に出演者全員で歌った「Do They Know It’s Christmas」が収録されている。ポールはヴォーカルをとることなく、ステージの後ろでピョンピョン飛び跳ねているだけなのだが、とりあえずは参加している。

【THE REAL BUDDY HOLLY STORY】
1985年12月12日に収録されたバディ・ホリーのヒストリー番組出演時の演奏である。アコギだけで「Words Of Love」を演奏している。間奏はポールが甲高い声でスキャットで通している。『BEATLES FOR SALE』とアレンジは変わらないながら、メロディの美しさは隠しようがなく、非常に美しい演奏となっている。

【THE TUBE】
1986年4月4日収録のTHE TUBE100周年記念ジングルである。ハード・ロック風のギターに合わせて「100周年おめでとう！」と繰り返す。

【PRINCE’S TRUST CONCERT】
1986年6月20日皇太子夫妻隣席の下で行なわれたプリンストラスト・コンサートである。ポールは「I Saw Her Standing There」「Get Back」「Long Tall Sally」と、ビートルズ時代のレパートリーを披露している。バックにはエルトン・ジョンやティナ・ターナーなど名立たるミュージシャンが揃っており、ステージで演奏することの楽しみをポールに呼び起こさせたようだ。この時の体験が、1989年ワールド・ツアーをするきっかけとなったと後にインタビューで語っている。いくぶんふっくらとした容貌のポールが玉のような汗を流しながら演奏している。ステージから離れてしばらく経つので、ポールの声は絶好調とは言い難いが、楽しんでノッて演奏しているのは非常によく伝わってくる熱演である。「Dancing In The Street」はミック・ジャガーとデヴィッド・ボウイのデュエットだが、ポールはバックでアコギを弾いている。余談だが歌詞に「Back In The USSR」が出てくる。

1986年11月24日ロイヤル・バラエティ・パフォーマンスでの演奏である。1963年ビートルズが出演した宝石ジャラジャラと同じイベントである。演奏前にポールは当時のこのジョンのジョークに触れ笑いをとっている。この日はリリースされたばかりのアルバム『PRESS TO PLAY』から「Only Love Remains」を演奏している。壮大な曲調かつ普遍的な歌詞を持つ名曲で、王室の方々の前で演奏するに適した選曲といえる。ポールはピアノに座り、リンダがコーラスをつけている。一切加工のないポールの生ヴォーカルで聴くと、この曲の良さが改めて伝わってくるというものだ。

【WOGAN】
1987年11月20日収録。この時期、ポールは『ALL THE BEST』というベスト盤をリリースしている。『WINGS GREATEST』以来10年ぶりのベスト盤である。『WINGS GREATEST』はタイトルに反してウイングスだけでなくソロ名義の曲も収録されていたが、シングル・アルバムであったため選曲漏れしたヒット曲も多数あった。『ALL THE BEST』はダブル・アルバムで新曲やシングルでしか入手できない曲など、非常に練られた選曲であった。この番組は、その新たなベスト盤のプロモーションのために出演したもので、ウイングス時代の「Jet」と「あの娘におせっかい」の2曲を披露している。80年代に演奏したウイングスの曲という非常に珍しいものである。ポールらしくベースが思いっきり大きくミックスされている。テレビ出演のためだけの急造バンドなのか演奏はこなれていないが、それが返って後のツアーなどで聴けるものと異なるテイストで楽しめる。

【BIRTHDAY MESSAGE FOR ALAN FREEMAN】
1987年に収録された、アラン・フリーマンの60歳の誕生日に向けての演奏である。曲は「SGT. Pepper’s」の替え歌で、かなりパンキッシュなアレンジとなっている。

【THE LAST RESORT】
1987年11月27日収録。こちらも『ALL THE BEST』のプロモーションのための出演なのだが、演奏する曲はアルバムには未収録の3曲「Don’t Get Around Any More」「I Saw Her Standing There」「Lawdy Miss Crowdy」である。オールディーズ・ナンバーを非常にノビノビと歌っているポールが印象的である。特に「Don’t Get Around Any More」のウ～ウ～の部分が萌えポイントである。「I Saw Her Standing There」はビートルズ時代から現在に至るまでポールの重要なステージ・レパートリーだが、ここで聴ける演奏は、それらとは異なるいかにも80年代のアレンジなのも聴きどころである。最後の「Spin It On」は番組のクロージング・ジングルとして演奏されたもので歌は入っていない。

【COUNT DOWN】
1987年12月2日収録。イントロの「Jam」に重なっている女性アナウンサーを聴けばわかるとおり、これはオランダの番組に出演したときのものである。この最初の「Jam」こそ生演奏だが、「Once Upon A Long Ago」はマイミングによるものである。マイミングは本シリーズのコンセプトから外れるが、「Jam」と同番組ということで例外的に収録してある。

【SAN REMO FESTIVAL】
1988年2月27日収録。この「Once Upon A Long Ago」もおそらくマイミングであると思われるのだが、ミックスが異なるように聞こえるのと、続く「あの娘におせっかい」はライヴ演奏であるので、その流れで収録されている。この2曲から伺えるとおり、これも『ALL THE BEST』のプロモーションを兼ねた出演である。80年代に「あの娘におせっかい」を2度もライヴ演奏している事実は意外と知られていないのではないだろうか。しかもウイングス時代のようにピアノではなく、ベースを弾きながらの演奏である。

【ECHOES UK SPECIAL / THE FAME GAME】
1988年8月2日収録。こちらは何と貴重な未発表曲である。その名も「In Liverpool」とタイトルが打たれた、郷愁漂う曲である。現在に至るまで未発表曲である。2008年リバプール公演で突如ライヴ演奏されたことでマニアは驚かされたが、実はそれを遡ること20年も前にこうして曲が完成しており、スタジオ・ライヴ形式で放送されていたのである。

【BUDDY HOLLY WEEK】
ポールはミュージシャンとしての活動のみならず、ビジネスとして数多くの楽曲版権を有していることでも知られている。特に自身がファンであるバディ・ホリーの楽曲版権はポールの手にある。そして毎年「BUDDY HOLLY WEEK」と称したイベントを主催していたのである。バディ・ホリーの曲を演奏して後世に伝えることを目的としているので、当然演奏されるのはバディの曲ばかりである。これは1988年9月7日の同イベントにおける「Rave On」のライヴ演奏である。

【McCARTNEY ON McCARTNEY】
1989年5月7日収録。これもまた自分が初めて作曲した「I Lost My Little Girl」を演奏している。古くはアナログ・ブート『WINGS OVER DENMARK』の冒頭に収録されていたことでも知られるテイクである。ディスク1の1曲目1984年の演奏と比べると、ミドル・パートがこの時点で遂に完成していることが伺える。

【RFANTASTICO】
1989年5月7日ブラジルの番組への出演である。アルバム『FLOWERS IN THE DIRT』はリリース直前だが、いち早くアルバム収録の「How Many People」をアコースティックで披露している。スタジオ・バージョンはレゲエ・テイストな曲であったが、こうしてアコギで演奏されると、また違った魅力が垣間見れるのではないか。実際に聴いてみるとレゲエのリズムは影を潜め、普通のマッカトニー・ナンバーとして聴ける。ここではもう一曲、さわりだけであるが、やはりアルバムから「Distractions」を聴くことが出来る。続く【RAPIDO】もブラジル滞在中の収録で、曲の演奏はないが、インタビューのバックで流されているのはポール・バンドの演奏である。

【MENSCH MEIR】
1989年5月18日ドイツの番組に出演した時の演奏である。「Put It There」はかなり完成度の高い演奏でスタジオ・バージョンとそっくり、当初マイミングかとも思ったが、注意深く聴くと歌いまわしや演奏が異なり、しっかりライヴ演奏であるのがわかる。「Figure Of Eight」はイントロのうわずったような歌いまわしが、ゲットバック・ツアー初期で歌われていたものと同じで、いくぶんゆったりとした演奏である。新曲をステージで披露するに当たって、徐々に練られていく過程においてあのようなタイトなアレンジに発展したと思われるが、ここで聴くことができるのは、その初期のまだ初々しいライヴ・テイクである。この曲ほど最初と最後で演奏が変化した曲も珍しい。

【WOGAN】
1989年5月19日収録。後にコンサートのオープニングを飾る「Figure Of Eight」がこの時も演奏されている。『FLOWERS IN THE DIRT』のプロモーションのための出演ではあるが、ツアーに向けての前哨戦という意味合いも込められているのだろう。日にちが前後する先のMENSCH MEIRにおける同曲の演奏と比べても歌いまわしがかなり異なるので、これもまたひとえにアレンジが固まっていないが故の事であろう。「My Brave Face」はマイミング演奏であるが、スタジオ・バージョンに重なって実際のライヴ・ヴォーカルも平行して聞こえる。

【COUNT DOWN】
1989年5月22日収録のオランダの番組への出演である。最初にバンド・メンバーをひとりひとり紹介している。このバンドでツアーに出ることが決まっており、それを踏まえた上でのバンド紹介であろう。ヘイミッシュやロビーなど、今となっては懐かしいメンバーである。「How Many People」は先のRFANTASTICOの演奏と異なりバンドによるライヴ演奏である。この曲をかなり頻繁に演奏しているが、実際のツアーでは一切演奏されていないのは歴史が語っている。「My Brave Face」はマイミング演奏である。

【GERMAN TV SHOW】
1989年収録。これも『FLOWERS IN THE DIRT』のプロモーションのための出演である。そしてここでもまた「How Many People」である。この曲をアルバムの中でも非常に重要な位置付けをポールが行なっているというのが伺える。もちろんバンドでの演奏である。

【STEVE WRITE SHOW】
1990年6月13日収録のラジオ番組における演奏である。既に前年よりツアーが始まっており、これはそのツアーの途次で出演したものであろう。ラジオ番組ということで、バンドは参加せずポールのみがインタビューを受けるという形で出演し、その余興でアコギを使って2曲「Matchbox」「Blackbird」を演奏している。「Blackbird」では、途中に合いの手を入れて笑いを誘い、実際にスタジオにいる人たちがこらえきれないとばかりに笑っているのがわかる。

【BUDDY HOLLY WEEK】
1990年9月4日に収録された、この年のバディ・ホリー・ウィークでの演奏である。この年はサービスよく3曲も演奏している。本物のバディのバックを勤めていたクリケッツの演奏である。ポールも気持ちが高揚するというものだ。この年以降、バディ・ホリー・ウィークが開催されたという話は聞かないので、この年が最後なのかもしれない。
