ポールマッカートニーは2018年で76歳になる。いくぶん白髪が増えたようだが、見た目は若々しく現役感が溢れている。何よりパフォーマンスに衰えが感じられないのが素晴らしい。前回のONE ON ONE TOURからタイトルを変え、2018年に入ってFRESHEN UP TOURと題し新たなツアーが発表になった。カナダを皮切りに日本、そして欧州、さらに2019年アメリカ・ツアーまでが発表になり、喜寿を目前にして尚、その意欲には驚かされる。さらに新しいツアーに先立ちニュー・アルバム『EGYPT STATION』を発表し、プロモーションを兼ねてシークレット・ギグが行なわれた。

会場となったのはニューヨークのグランド・セントラル駅構内における特設ステージ。通常は普通に駅舎として交通の要となっている建物の中に、仮設のステージを組み、わずか200人程度の聴衆を前にフル・ステージを行なったのである。このバンド・メンバーになってから既に16年目になる。バンド名こそないものの、ポールのキャリアの中で最も長く時間を共有した仲間であり、もはや不動のメンバーと言えるだろう。

注目の1曲目は「A Hard Day’s Night」であった。ジョンのパートも含め通してポールひとり歌うバージョンはもうすっかりお馴染みとなっている。疾走感あふれる素晴らしい演奏である。2曲目はいきなり「Hi Hi Hi」である。これから始まるツアーがこの日のセットリストを踏襲したものになるのか、それとも全く異なるものになるのか、現時点では不明だが、このオープニングだけで何が飛び出すか非常に期待させられるものである。3曲目はギターのチューニング音だけでわかる「Can’t Buy Me Love」である。

そして「Letting Go」には客席にホーンセクションが控えており、通常ウィックスがキーボードで奏でていたホーンの音を生音で再現するという新しい試みがなされている。かつてポールは「ホーンセクションがないと音が淋しいのはわかっている。しかし最後にメンバー5人だけで聴衆に応えるのは誇らしい。5人だけで全ての演奏を完結させていることを誇らしく思う」とインタビューで述べている。今回はその禁を破りホーン・セクションを導入、曲のエンディング近くにブレイク部分を設け、ホーン・ソロを挿入するというのも従来にはなかった新しいアレンジである。

久しぶりの「I’ve Got A Feeling」を挟んで新曲「Come On To Me」である。起伏の少ない曲で、メロディよりも歌詞を連ねることに重点を置いたニュー・アルバムからのシングル曲。そして「My Valentine」がまた面白い。「これはナンシーのために書いた曲だよ」と曲紹介をすると、客席で本人がにっこり笑うシーンが印象的である。ポールはなんと運動会で使うような拡声器を使って歌う。もちろんこれは敢えてそのようなボーカル・エフェクト効果を狙ってのものであるが、非常に面白い試みである。「Letting Go」と並び、今までもステージで演奏していた曲ながら従来と違うアレンジで提示するという、本作の聴き所のひとつ。

そして恐らく新しいツアーでも目玉のひとつとなるであろう、2018年になって初めてステージで演奏する「From Me To You」である。ポールはアコギで、ウィックスがハーモニカを担当。現代の耳で聴くと幾分古い曲調である印象は否めないが、あの雰囲気を再現するのが難しい初期ビートルズの曲を現在のポールとして演奏している。あのミドルの転調部分を閃いた時はヤッタ！と思った、アンソロジーでも語られていたこのエピソードを演奏後に述べている。「Love Me Do」の時は、ジョンがハーモニカを吹かねばならないため、急遽自分が歌うことになって緊張のあまり声が震えた、という、これまたアンソロジーと同じ話をしている。

「Blackbird」ではステージを降り、客席の中央に移動して歌うという演出がなされた。ちょうどローリング・ストーンズのＢステージのような感じだと思ってもらいたい。移動の最中に握手を求められ、マイクの前に立ったポールは「次の選挙には私に入れてください！」というジョークを言っている。再びステージに戻り、新曲「Who Cares」の前にはファン二人をステージに挙げて演奏のバックで踊ってもらうサービスも。このファン、胸にポールの新曲のタイトルをプリントをしたシャツを着ており、熱烈なファンだという事がわかる。

コンサート後半はポールのステージで欠かせない曲が並ぶ。特設ステージという特殊性から「Live And Let Die」、時間的制約から「Hey Jude」が演奏されなかった以外は、通常のフル・ステージといっても良い。もちろん通常のツアーにおけるステージよりはショート・セットであろうが、オープニングから最後のアビーロード・メドレーまでのフル・ステージである。FRESHEN UP TOURがどのようなセットリストになるか現時点では不明だが、大いに期待させられる内容である。
