’70年代前半のFLEETWOOD MACにおいて中心的な役割を果たしたボブ・ウェルチ。彼の代表作と言えば何と言ってもソロアルバム「FRENCH KISS」。しかしロック・ファンにとっては、彼がJETHRO TULLのグレン・コーニックらと結成したハード・ロック・バンドPARISこそ、思い入れが強いのではないでしょうか。このバンドは著名な音楽評論家が取り上げた事により、欧米よりも日本でこそ正当な評価がなされています。
PARISは２年程度の活動で瓦解した事もあり、ライヴ音源は余り知られていません。その貴重なライヴを、あの”JEMSマスター”で収録した本作「DETROIT BIG TOWNE, 1976」は、全てのロック・ファンにとって「文化遺産」とすらいえる存在。彼らの活動を知らなかったというビギナーの方にも、ぜひ触れてほしい一本です。

本録音はPARISが2ndアルバム「BIG TOWNE, 2061」発表後に行ったプロモーション・ツアーから、1976年10月5日のデトロイト”フォード・オーディトリアム”公演を、当時としては極上のオーディエンス・ソースで収録したもの。オープニング・アクトとしての出演だった事から、演奏時間そのものは40分弱と短めです。しかし特異な方向性とセンス溢れるオリジナルなパフォーマンスは「全編これ聴き所」と言っても差し支えないでしょう。何よりも”JEMSマスター”音源ならではの録音状態は絶品！　近年の録音にすら感じてしまう抜群のクリアネスと演奏のダイレクト感は、時間の短さを補って余りある素晴らしさで、バンドの演奏を目いっぱい楽しませます。
オープニングのバンド紹介から、間髪入れず新作からの「Heart Of Stone」でライヴはスタート。ソウルフルなグルーヴとハードなギターのマッチングは最高の心地よさです。ウェルチはソロこそ割合オーソドックスですが、リズム・カッティングのセンスには驚かされます。ドラムは2ndアルバムにも参加したハント・セールスが、安定感とパワーのあるプレイでバンド全体を牽引。コーニックのベースは最初から自由に弾きまくっている印象で、随所でその印象的なプレイを聴き取れます。
1stアルバム「PARIS」からの「Black Book」では、バンドがLED ZEPPELINから受けたと思われる影響がサウンドに反映されています。しかし彼らは2ndアルバムにおいて、よりファンク色の強い独特のロックを披露していました。２曲目の「Blue Robin」や「New Orleans」では、その要素を色鮮やかに感じられるでしょう。
同じく新作からの「Pale Horse, Pale Rider」や「Big Towne, 2061」では、３ピースのバンド編成では珍しく、シンセサイザーが重要な楽器として使われているのが特徴。前者「Pale Horse, Pale Rider」では重厚な音色が独特のムードを醸し、後者「Big Towne, 2061」では極上のグルーヴを巻き起こしています。この「Big Towne, 2061」から流れ込む「Money Love」の躍動感は最高！　ファンクに根ざした個性的なロックこそ、PARISの魅力と言えるでしょう。ラストは1stからの「Nazarene」がパワフルな演奏で締めくくります。ヴォーカル・メロディやそのムードはZEPPELINさながら。痺れるほどにクールな演奏を楽しめます。

ウェルチはその後「BIG TOWNE, 2061」に続くアルバム製作に取り掛かりますが、作業にメンバーが相次いで離脱し、バンドは崩壊してしまいます。ウェルチが手がけていた「PARISとしての３作目」は姿を変えて「FRENCH KISS」となり、彼に大きな成功をもたらす事になります。
PARISは結果としてアルバム２枚、活動期間２年弱の短命バンドで終わってしまいました。しかしそのオリジナリティ溢れるサウンドは、今なおマニアの絶大な支持を受けています。彼らのライヴを極上の録音で現代に残したテーパーには感謝あるのみ！　本来ならばプレスCDとしてのリリースが自然な決定的音源です。本作はライヴ・テープの旨みが凝縮された、コレクターズ・アイテムならではの一本。本作をまだ聴いていないという方には、この機会にぜひお楽しみ頂きたいと思います！
