Ozzy Osbourne in 1983 broke new ground by discovering Jake E. Lee, a hero with a completely different personality from Randy Rhoads. Phantom bassist: A new excavation live album that tells the scene of the dawn where Don Costa was also released.
It is “January 19, 1983 Offenbach performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is an excellent audience recording that tells the whole story. Many masterpiece live albums from the Jake era will be released at the same time this week, but this work is the very early stage. It was not the “BARK AT THE MOON Tour” but the first act of the “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL Tour”. Let’s look back on the schedule before and after joining Jake to imagine the situation in that area.

This is the history of 1983 since the release of “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”. Initially it was the “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL Tour” that started with Brad Gillis, but after the end of the year it was replaced by Jake. This work was the 5th performance of “Europe # 1” immediately after that … In other words, it was Jake’s 5th stage.
This work, which recorded such a concert, is a real sound that revives the scene of the dawn freshly. Although it is a vintage audience and not a type that can be mistaken for a sound board, a powerful core jumps straight into the thick sound, and you can clearly understand each word of the lyrics. And above all, the master freshness is enormous. As a matter of fact, this work was recorded by Taper, whose MONSTERS OF ROCK relationship has recently become a hot topic. MOTLEY CRUE’s press CD “MONSTERS OF ROCK NUREMBERG 1984 (Zodiac 433)” and Ozzy’s “MONSTERS OF ROCK: KARLSRUHE 1984 (Shades 1297)” will be released at the same time, but this work is also the master collection. I couldn’t make it into a press because I was sucking in the thick hall sound probably because of the indoor venue, but it wasn’t a pop-out audience recording.
The show drawn with that fresh sound is also extremely fresh. First of all, the face is extremely rare, not only the keyboard is Lindsay Bridgewater, but also the base is Don Costa. Yes, that person has the legend that he was enrolled in the predecessor band of GREAT WHITE and the early W.A.S.P., and played with a gold grater (cheese grater) stuck on the back of the base and was full of blood.
Since this work is a live album, I can’t see if Costa is really bloody, but Jake’s lively performance is so real that it comes to mind. The rare song is “Children Of The Grave”, but the performance itself is rare. He doesn’t seem to have his own, but he’s no longer willing to impersonate Randy, and his sharpness and tension are amazing. The selfless performance of a 25-year-old young man who just jumped out into the scene is dazzling.
A stage only in 1983 where Jake E. Lee, who had just made his professional debut, and the phantom Don Costa were lined up. It is a historical new excavation live album where such an extremely rare scene blows out from the speaker. An ultra-realistic on-site experience because of the Omoto Master Sound. これが『SPEAK OF THE DEVIL』リリース以降、1983年いっぱいの歩み。当初はブラッド・ギルスと開始した“SPEAK OF THE DEVIL Tour”でしたが、年末を挟んでにジェイクへと交代。本作はその直後となる「欧州#1」の５公演目……つまり、ジェイク５回目のステージでした。
そんなコンサートを記録した本作は、黎明の現場が瑞々しく甦るリアル・サウンド。あくまでもヴィンテージ・オーディエンスであってサウンドボードと間違えるようなタイプではないものの、厚めの鳴りの中を力強い芯が真っ直ぐに飛びこみ、歌詞の一語一語まではっきり分かる。そして何より、マスター鮮度が絶大。実のところ、本作を録音したのは、最近MONSTERS OF ROCK関係が話題となっているテーパー。MOTLEY CRUEのプレスCD『MONSTERS OF ROCK NUREMBERG 1984（Zodiac 433）』やオジーの『MONSTERS OF ROCK: KARLSRUHE 1984（Shades 1297）』も同時リリースとなりますが、本作もそのマスター・コレクションなのです。屋内会場のせいか厚めのホール鳴りも吸い込んでいるためにプレス化は果たせませんでしたが、そんじょそこらのポッと出のオーディエンス録音ではないのです。
そのフレッシュ・サウンドで描かれるショウもまた、極めて新鮮。まず面子が激レアでして、キーボードがリンゼイ・ブリッジウォーターなだけでなく、ベースもドン・コスタ。そう、GREAT WHITEの前身バンドや初期W.A.S.P.に在籍し、ベースの裏に金おろし（チーズおろし器）を貼り付けて血だらけになって演奏していたという伝説を持つ、あのヒトです。
本作はライヴアルバムなので本当にコスタが血まみれなのかは見えませんが、溌剌としたジェイクの演奏は目に浮かぶほどにリアル。レア曲は「Children Of The Grave」ですが、演奏自体がレア。まだ自分のものに仕切ってはいないようですが、すでにランディのモノマネする気はなく、キレもテンションも凄い。25歳の若者がシーンに飛び出したばかりの無我夢中な演奏ぶりが眩しいのです。
