Introducing a wonderful live album that recorded the second solo visit to Japan. This work contains a performance of “October 30, 1978: Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium”. The return performance of this year was originally scheduled for April, but Olivia postponed it in opposition to the dolphin extermination case in Japan. It was realized in October, half a year later. First, let’s check the position of the show on the tour schedule.

Above, all 12 performances. It was a large-scale tour that traversed the archipelago from Iwate in the north to Fukuoka in the south. The Nagoya performance of this work was the final concert. Speaking of Olivia, the first visit to Japan in 1976 is full of various records such as the official board “LOVE PERFORMANCE”, the masterpiece “BUDOKAN 1976 (Calm & Storm 038)” recorded by TV broadcast pro shots and Miracle Man. However, 1978 is extremely rare. Even though there are so many performances, many people may hear it for the first time in this work.
Such a valuable work is a vintage audience with a deep taste of quality. It is an original master brought by our original route, but above all, the clearness of the singing voice that arrives straight is wonderful. Despite the 70’s, the master freshness is outstanding and there is no distortion or turbidity. Although it is not a type of “sound board”, the sound of the venue is transparent and conveys the subtleties of the singing voice without hiding it. What a wonderful thing about “Take Me Home Country Roads” singing with a tense voice … Of course, the band sound that supports that singing voice is also clear. It’s not a modest mix, but it’s a vibrant sound that doesn’t mix with vocals.
The sound depicts a rush of famous songs that are different from the first visit to Japan. Of course, I also sing major songs that were heard even in 1976, such as “I Honestly Love You” and “Have You Never Been Mellow,” but that’s about one-third of the total. The rest are full of blockbuster songs from “MAKING A GOOD THING BETTER”, “TOTALLY HOT” and the musical movie “Grease” released after the first visit to Japan. Cover songs such as Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are” and John Denver’s “Follow Me” are studded there.
And the mood of the venue where you can immerse yourself in the sea of ​​such a famous song is also wonderful. The gentle clapping of each song is warm, and cheers fly from all over the venue between the songs. Olivia talks to her intimately, but in response to that … Rather than saying, “Olivia!” Olivia introduces the song while suddenly calling out to her name. As mentioned earlier, it was a very controversial visit to Japan, but the atmosphere of this work is full of hospitality. There is plenty of Western music mood in the late 70’s.

Two years after the first visit to Japan, which became a social phenomenon, the second performance in Japan, which has become a social uproar in another sense. There was a friendship between Olivia and the fans who overcame the turmoil and reunited. It is a masterpiece of a live album where you can witness the scene and immerse yourself in the fresh singing voice. One piece that you can fully enjoy the blockbuster songs that have become even richer since your first visit to Japan. Introducing a rare brand that carries “Nagoya in 1978”.

２度目のソロ来日を記録した素晴らしいライヴアルバムが登場です。本作に収められているのは「1978年10月30日：愛知県体育館」公演。この年の再来日公演は本来４月に予定されていましたが、オリビアが日本のイルカ駆除事件に反対して延期。半年後の10月になって実現しました。まずは、そのツアースケジュールでショウのポジションを確認してみましょう。

以上、全12公演。北は岩手から南は福岡まで、列島を縦断する大規模なツアーでした。本作の名古屋公演は、その最終盤にあたるコンサートでした。オリビアというと1976年の初来日はオフィシャル盤『LOVE PERFORMANCE』をはじめ、テレビ放送プロショットやミラクルマン録音の大傑作『BUDOKAN 1976（Calm & Storm 038）』など、さまざまな記録がひしめいています。しかし、1978年は極めて希。これだけの公演数がありながら、本作で初めて耳にするという方も多いのではないでしょうか。
そんな貴重な本作は、クオリティも味わい深いヴィンテージ・オーディエンス。当店の独自ルートでもたらされたオリジナル・マスターなのですが、何よりも真っ直ぐ届く歌声のクリアさが素晴らしい。70年代にも関わらずマスター鮮度はバツグンで歪みや濁りがまったく見られない。「まるでサウンドボード」というタイプではないものの、その会場音響が透き通っていて歌声の機微を隠すことなく伝えてくれる。張りのある声で歌い上げる「Take Me Home Country Roads」のなんと素晴らしいこと……。もちろん、その歌声を支えるバンド・サウンドもクリア。決して控えめなミックスではないにも関わらず、ヴォーカルと混じり合わない鮮やかなサウンドなのです。
そのサウンドで描かれるのは、初来日とはまた違った名曲のラッシュ。もちろん「I Honestly Love You」や「Have You Never Been Mellow」など、1976年でも聴かれた大代表曲も歌いますが、それは全体の１／３程度。残りは初来日後に発表された『MAKING A GOOD THING BETTER』や『TOTALLY HOT』、ミュージカル映画『グリース』からの大ヒット曲がたっぷり。そこにビリー・ジョエルの「Just The Way You Are」、ジョン・デンバーの「Follow Me」といったカバー曲が散りばめられるのです。
そして、そんな名曲の海に浸りきる会場のムードも素晴らしい。どの曲でも優しい手拍子が暖かく、曲間では会場のあちこちから声援が飛ぶ。オリビアが親しげに話しかけるのですが、それに応える……と言うよりは無関係に「オリビアぁ！」とカナ発音の名前が飛びまくる。そんな唐突に名前コールに吹き出しながらも、曲を紹介するオリビア。先述の通り、かなり物議を醸した来日だったわけですが、本作から漂う雰囲気は歓待一色。70年代末期の洋楽ムードがたっぷりと漂うのです。

社会現象と化した初来日から２年、別の意味で社会的騒動となってしまった２度目の来日公演。そこには騒動を乗り越えて再会を果たしたオリビアとファンの交歓がありました。その現場に立ち会い、瑞々しい歌声に浸りきれるライヴアルバムの大傑作です。初来日からさらに豊かになった大ヒット曲もたっぷり楽しめる１枚。“1978年の名古屋”を運んでくれる希代の銘品が登場です。
