Every great band has a period of “starting era”. It is before the explosion of popularity, and it can be said that it is a time when the existence of sound sources and images tends to be limited. Oasis made its debut in 1994 with its debut single “Supersonic” on April 11th. This song, which has become a classic now, was only at number 31 on the chart at that time, and the number of gigs was sparse for a while after releasing the single. It may seem surprising considering the subsequent rise in popularity, but before and after the release of “Supersonic” was an unexpectedly modest time.
As if to reflect that, the live sound source of Oasis Spring 1994 is limited, but the concept of this time is to show the excellent audience recordings left in such a situation on a limited press CD.
The main recording is a gig at the old trout, a live house in Windsor on May 7th, when it first appeared. This venue is a venerable live house where up-and-coming American bands as well as England opened gigs in the early 90’s. This audience recording that captures the gig of the oasis also has plenty of realism like “Hako”. Therefore, the sound image is also very on, and the powerful sound image that makes you want to poke “sound board” in some places is a masterpiece.
The best example would be the intro of “Bring It On Down”. The drumming that Tony McCarroll strikes is the sound board itself. Not only are the sound images close to each other, but the sounds of each instrument are vivid. Is it the sound output from the amplifier instead of the PA such as Noel’s guitar? It’s almost an illusion, and Gigsey’s base is groaning. Above all, Liam’s singing voice is really close. In the finale “I Am The Walrus”, he and the band couldn’t get in touch with each other.
If it became a record in May 1994, his singing voice echoed in the small haco of the old trout with the originality that was heard on the first album, and the stage time of less than 45 minutes was also effective. Liam’s voice is coming out so much that it feels good.
What is even more surprising is that the Japanese were present at this oasis gig shortly after their debut. In front of “Live Forever”, you can clearly hear the conversation of a Japanese woman, “Isn’t your foot black?” It is presumed that he was the person who was staying in the area, but there was a Japanese who had already seen the oasis immediately after his debut. At the same time, another audience (in English, which seems to be a local) muttered, “Do you want to cover T. Rex?”, Which clearly refers to “Cigarettes & Alcohol” and covers. It is only at the time of debut that it is misunderstood as a song.
Another live sound source recorded in this title is a gig performed at 100 clubs in London on March 24, two weeks before its debut. Speaking of 100 clubs, it is also a venerable venue as a gateway to punk such as the Sex Pistols and crashes. It’s not hard to imagine that it was an enthusiastic appearance as an oasis.
What is even more surprising is the high quality of this audience recording. As expected, it is not as good as the old trout of the main story, but the sound image is also on and it is full of power. Even though the band’s gig has already been well received, it’s just before its debut. I cannot help but be surprised that such a high-quality sound source was left at such a timing.
Recording started from the beginning of “Bring It On Down”, and there was a little muffled sound. However, this is what makes you feel as if you have opened the door of 100 clubs and entered the venue, and the sound will soon become clearer and the performance will close more and more. As it was before the debut, the repertoire was small, and the stage itself was less than 30 minutes.
Due to this short recording time, the only item released so far was the CD-R, and only “I Will Believe”, which was the highlight of the day, was a compilation and was recorded on the press CD. However, this is the first time that a press CD release of the entire gig has been realized. A press CD is suitable for recording such a high-quality audience.
The highlight “I Will Believe” is the only live take that is familiar to enthusiasts as a record of pure live performances, and at the same time, it is really lucky that this song was captured with the highest sound quality. In particular, Liam’s voice echoes loudly, and I am fascinated by the atmosphere full of innocence along with the performance. In this way, a historical document that captures both before and after of Oasis’s debut in 1994 with incredibly high-quality audience recordings. This is a record of the oasis “Blue Age”!
どんな偉大なバンドにも“駆け出しの時代”という時期が存在します。それは人気が爆発する前を指し、音源や映像の存在が限られがちな時期だとも言えましょう。オアシスが1994年にデビューシングル「Supersonic」でデビューを果たしたのは4月11日のこと。今やクラシックと化したこの曲も当時はチャートの31位どまりでして、シングルをリリースしてしばらくの間はギグの本数もまばらでした。その後の人気の上昇を考えると意外にも思えますが、「Supersonic」リリースの前後というのは思いのほか地味な時期だったのです。
それを反映するかの如くオアシス1994年春というのはライブ音源も限られているのですが、そうした中で残されている優良オーディエンス録音を限定プレスCDに収めてみせたのが今回のコンセプト。
メインに収録されているのは初登場5月7日にウインザーにあるライブハウス、オールド・トラウトでのギグ。この会場は90年代前半においてイギリスはもとよりアメリカの新進気鋭バンドなどもギグを開いた由緒あるライブハウス。オアシスのギグを捉えた今回のオーディエンス録音も「ハコ」らしい臨場感がたっぷり。それ故に音像も非常にオンで、所々で「サウンドボードか」と突っ込みたくなるようなド迫力の音像が圧巻。
最たる例は「Bring It On Down」のイントロでしょう。トニー・マッキャロルが叩きだすドラミングはサウンドボードそのもの。単に音像が近いというだけにとどまらず、それぞれの楽器の音が生々しい。ノエルのギターなどPAでなくアンプからの出音では？と錯覚しそうになるほどですし、ギグジーのベースもブリブリと唸っている。何よりリアムの歌声がまた実に近い。勢い余ってフィナーレ「I Am The Walrus」では彼とバンドが噛み合わなくなる場面まで。
それが1994年5月の記録ともなれば、彼の歌声はファースト・アルバムで聞けたあの初々しさそのままでオールド・トラウトの小さなハコに響き渡っていて、なおかつ45分弱というステージの時間も功を奏して気持ちいいほどにリアムの声が出ている。
さらに驚かされるのが、このデビューして間もないオアシスのギグで日本人が居合わせていたということ。「Live Forever」の前では日本人女性の「足が真っ黒じゃない？」という会話がはっきり聞き取れる。恐らくは現地に滞在していた人物なのだと推測されますが、デビュー直後で既にオアシスを見ていた日本人がいたとは。それと同時に別の観客（こちらは現地の人だと思われる英語で）「T・レックスのカバーやるよな？」と呟いており、それが「Cigarettes & Alcohol」を指すのは明らかであると共にカバー曲と誤解されるのもデビュー当時ならでは。
本タイトルに収録されているもう一つのライブ音源はデビューを二週間後に控えた3月24日にロンドンの100クラブで行ったギグを収録。100クラブと言えばセックス・ピストルズやクラッシュを始めとしたパンクの登竜門として由緒ある会場でもある。それだけにオアシスとしても気合の入る出演であったことは想像に難くありません。
それ以上に驚かされるのは、このオーディエンス録音のクオリティの高さ。さすがに本編オールド・トラウトには及ばないものの、こちらも音像がオンで迫力満点。既に評判となっていたバンドのギグとはいえ、まだデビュー直前。そんなタイミングでこれほどまで高音質な音源が残されていたことに驚きを禁じえません。
録音は「Bring It On Down」の序盤からスタートしており、そこでは少し音がこもっている。ところが、これこそ100クラブのドアを開けて中に入ったかの臨場感がありありと伝わってくるもので、すぐに音がクリアーになって演奏がどんどんクローズしてくるという。さすがにデビュー前という事もありレパートリー少なめ、ステージ自体も30分を切るものでした。
この収録時間の短さが仇となって今までリリースされたアイテムはCD-Rのみ、またこの日の目玉である「I Will Believe」のみがコンピレーションものでプレスCDに収録されたことがありましたが、ギグ全体のプレスCDリリースが実現するのは今回が初めて。これだけの高音質オーディエンス録音ならばプレスCDが相応しいというもの。
その目玉たる「I Will Believe」は唯一の純生ライブ演奏の記録としてマニアにおなじみなライブテイクであると同時に、この曲が最高音質で捉えられたというのは本当に幸運でしょう。特にリアムの声が大きく響き渡り、演奏と共に初々しさに溢れた雰囲気には聞き惚れてしまいます。このようにオアシス1994年のデビュー時のビフォー＆アフターをどちらも信じられないほどの高音質オーディエンス録音で捉えた歴史的ドキュメント。これはオアシス「青の時代」の記録です！
