THE NICE is a legendary group that spreads the seeds of followers around the world with the influence of EL & P. A decision board featuring the multi-camera professional shots is here.
There may be no underrated group like THE NICE. The recreation that rocks jazz, classical music, and contemporary music into rock with a brute force is the “columbus egg”. The impact spread throughout Europe without waiting for the appearance of EL & P, and became the source of followers in various countries such as LE ORME, TRIUMVIRAT, PELL MELL, ELECTRA, COLLEGIUM MUSICUM, and so on. In other words, it was also the starting point for embodying “easy to understand” in “progressive rock”, which is preceded by clever thinking. That said, it’s not the case that THE NICE has become popular on large-scale world tours. In the meantime, they evolved into EL & P, and their stage is mostly in their home country, England. Rather, it was media appearances such as album work and television that spread their innovation and appeal. This work is a collection of professional shots of THE NICE TV. It’s a DVD that has been used to the best version, which has been upgraded one after another as of 2019.
There are 7 types of TV programs in this work. Both are standard shots for mania, but only masters who have the highest peaks. Let’s introduce them individually.
The 7 programs included in this work are roughly divided into two, and the first half is West Germany. At the beginning, two pro shots of the famous program “HITS A GO GO” appeared. As you can imagine from the fact that it is arranged at the beginning, the biggest point of this performance is quality. All the masters recorded in this work are just the best of the official class, but this video is really amazing. Details are not communicated, but completely unrelated to dubbing marks and aging. This visual beauty is a station master … I think that it is a digital rebroadcast even if it looks conservatively. The beauty of the dimension that cannot be otherwise. The program includes two episodes, “September 1968 (America)” and “November 12, 1969 (Country Pie / Hang On To A Dream)”, but the first 1968 is full color. It’s a beautiful and beautiful video that captures its vividness.
And the contents are too wonderful. The beginning of the go-go dance bursts into a sense of time, and “Hang On To A Dream” progresses simultaneously with a horror movie skit. Of course, the most important live is “America”, where the young Keith’s fingertips extending from the gold sleeves dance brilliantly, and despite the studio live, he stabs a knife in the organ and hops over. In 1969, “Country Pie” and “Hang On To A Dream” are singing songs, so there will be a lot of Lee Jackson, but the main character is still Keith. You can enjoy the great performance of young Maestro with a multi-camera.
● STAR-CLUB (1969)
The third is West Star Broadcast “STAR-CLUB”. This is also a master of the finest, even black and white film grain. “HITS A GO GO” was a studio live in the broadcasting station, but this is “Rondo” in Hamburg concert video. This is a news-like video with a little bit of German narration.
The second half is 4 French TV pro shots. First comes the phantom music program “BOUTON ROUGE”. This program was broadcast for about one year from April 1967 to May 1968, and was also called “TV’s first rock magazine”. THE NICE appeared twice in the later stages of “March 23, 1968 (Rondo)” and “April 20, 1968 (Azrael)”. The former is monochrome, the latter is full color, and a great performance is seen, but the point is a guitarist. At the back of the screen, David Orist is playing the guitar! Even though THE NICE’s video is precious, you can see the early four-person era with multi-camera pro shots. Keith goes on a rampage while struggling with the organ, and the Oristo ticks the rhythm silently, staring at it. Obviously, only him is floating, and it is a valuable video that shows that it was nature’s course to leave.
● FORUM MUSIQUES (November 1968)
Next comes the TV program “FORUM MUSIQUES” after becoming a trio. It is a famous program in PINK FLOYD, but THE NICE appeared on “November 20, 1968”, which was the release period of “Shonen Yakugaku Gakusei” The three live “Brandenburger”, “America” and “She Belongs To Me” are live in monochrome. It seems that it is a simple and intimate performance at first because it is sitting in a simple studio in the song and sitting in front of the audience who does not speak out, but it can not be suppressed when “ America ” is heated Keith pierces the knife and begins to rampage. Three people can watch a lot of performances while exchanging hot interplays while watching each other’s performance rather than the audience.
● DIM DAM DOM (March 1969)
The last to appear is a full-color super beautiful video again. This is the French TV program “DIM DAM DOM” that appeared on “March 1, 1969”. The middle part of this work is monochrome, but this video is really beautiful. Like “HITS A GO GO (1968)” at the beginning, it can be thought of only as a station master, and it is a completely official video beauty even when viewed by modern digital standards.
And its contents are also very colorful. It is a studio live of the two songs “Intermezzo From The Karelia Suite” and “Rondo”, where beautiful women in gorgeous costumes appear. They are amazing again. “Intermezzo From The Karelia Suite” feels like a casual mannequin is dancing, but when it comes to “Rondo”, it ’s a different world. Everyone was shining, and that was exactly what came out of “Space Trek” (Star Trek) and “Outer Limits”. She twists her body to meet the crazy THE NICE interplay. Of course, Keith is also struggling with an organ with one knife in hand, and a crazy different space is drawn. No, the 60s are really amazing.
”Jimimi of the keyboard. Keith Emerson breached the possibilities of the keyboard during the lock dawn. Arrangement, performance, performance … This is a masterpiece video that can be enjoyed for about an hour with THE NICE, which was filled with the radiance of the pioneering period. The best multi-camera professional shots assembled by the highest masters in history. Please enjoy it carefully.
不世出の天才キース・エマーソンの名を世に知らしめ、（ある意味）EL&P以上の影響力でフォロワーの種を全世界にまき散らした伝説のグループ、THE NICE。そのマルチカメラ・プロショットを集成した決定盤が登場です。
THE NICEほど過小評価なグループはないかも知れません。ロックの常識「ギターが主役」をあっさりとひっくり返し、ジャズやクラシック、現代音楽を力業でロックへ引き込む娯楽性は、まさに“コロンブスの卵”。その衝撃はEL&Pの登場を待たずしてヨーロッパ全土へと広がり、LE ORME、TRIUMVIRAT、PELL MELL、ELECTRA、COLLEGIUM MUSICUM等々、各国のフォロワー達の源泉にもなった。ともすれば頭でっかちな思考性が先行する「プログレッシヴ・ロック」において“分かりやすい楽しさ”を体現する原点でもありました。とは言え、THE NICEが大規模なワールド・ツアーで人気を広めていったかと言うと、そうでもない。あっと言う間にEL&Pへ進化したこともあり、彼らのステージは大部分が母国イギリス。むしろ、彼らの革新性や魅力を広めていったのはアルバム作品やテレビ等のメディア出演でした。本作は、そんなTHE NICEのテレビ出演プロショットを集成した１枚。それも、奇しくも2019年現在で次々とアップグレード版が登場している最高峰版を一網打尽にしたDVDなのです。
そんな本作に収められているTV番組は７種類。いずれもマニアには定番となるプロショット映像ですが、それぞれに最高峰を極めるマスターばかり。それでは個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【前半：西ドイツ放送（３番組）】
●HITS A GO GO（1968年／1969年の２回分）
本作に収められた７番組は大きく２つに分けられ、前半は西ドイツ放送。冒頭を飾るのは名物番組“HITS A GO GO”の出演した２回分のプロショットです。冒頭に配されていることからもご想像頂ける通り、この演奏最大のポイントはクオリティ。本作に収録されたマスターはすべてオフィシャル級の超極上物ばかりですが、この映像は本当に凄い。詳細は伝わっていませんが、ダビング痕や経年劣化などとは完全無縁。この映像美は局マスター……控えめに見てもデジタル再放送なのではないでしょうか。それ以外にはあり得ない次元の美しさ。この番組からは「1968年９月（America）」「1969年11月12日分（Country Pie・Hang On To A Dream）」の２回分が収録されていますが、特に冒頭1968年分はフルカラー。その鮮やかさが目に染みる美超美麗映像です。
そして中身がまた素晴らしすぎる。冒頭のゴーゴーダンスからして時代感が炸裂し、「Hang On To A Dream」ではまんまホラー映画な寸劇と同時進行する。もちろん肝心のライヴ凄まじく、「America」では金袖から伸びる若きキースの指先が華麗に舞い、スタジオ・ライヴにも関わらずオルガンにナイフを刺し、飛び越えながら弾きまくる。1969年は「Country Pie」「Hang On To A Dream」と歌物なのでリー・ジャクソンも多めに映りますますが、それでも主役はやはりキース。若きマエストロの大熱演をマルチカメラでじっくりと楽しめるのです。
●STAR-CLUB（1969年）
３つめも西ドイツ放送の“STAR-CLUB”。これまたモノクロながらフィルムの粒子感まで鮮明な極上マスター。“HITS A GO GO”は放送局内のスタジオ・ライヴでしたが、こちらはハンブルグのコンサート映像で「Rondo」を披露。そこにドイツ語ナレーションが（少し）被さるニュース風の映像です。
【後半：フランス放送（４番組）】
●BOUTON ROUGE（1968年３月／４月の２回分）
後半はフランスのTVプロショット４種。まず登場するのは幻の音楽番組“BOUTON ROUGE”。この番組は1967年４月から翌1968年５月まで約１年間だけ放送され、「テレビ初のロック・マガジン」とも称されたもの。THE NICEは後期の「1968年３月23日（Rondo）」と「1968年４月20日（Azrael）」に２回出演。前者はモノクロ、後者はフルカラーで大熱演が見られるわけですが、さらにポイントなのはギタリスト。画面奥ではデヴィッド・オリストがギターを弾いている！ ただでさえTHE NICEの映像は貴重なわけですが、初期の４人編成時代をマルチカメラ・プロショットで見られるわけです。キースがオルガンと格闘しながら大暴れし、それを静かに見つめながら黙々とリズムを刻むオリスト……。明らかに彼だけが浮いており、去っていくのも自然の成り行きだったと分かる貴重映像です。
●FORUM MUSIQUES（1968年11月）
続いて登場するのはトリオになってからのTV番組“FORUM MUSIQUES”。PINK FLOYDでも有名な番組ですが、THE NICEは『少年易老学難成』の発売期だった「1968年11月20日」に出演。モノクロで３曲「Brandenburger」「America」「She Belongs To Me」のスタジオ・ライヴを披露しています。シンプルな曲内スタジオでひな壇に大人しく座って声も出さない観客を前にしているせいか、最初のうちはわりと淡々等した演奏ぶりですが、「America」が加熱してくると押さえきれなくなったキースがナイフを突き刺し、暴れ出す。３人が客席よりも互いの演奏を見ながら熱いインタープレイを交わす演奏をたっぷり見つめられます。
●DIM DAM DOM（1969年３月）
最後に登場するのは再びフルカラーの超美麗映像。「1969年３月１日」に出演したフランスのTV番組“DIM DAM DOM”です。本作の中盤はモノクロも多いのですが、この映像は本当に美しい。冒頭の“HITS A GO GO（1968年分）”と同じく、局マスターとしか思えず、現代のデジタル基準で見ても完全オフィシャル級の映像美です。
そして、その中身がまた極めてカラフル。２曲「Intermezzo From The Karelia Suite」「Rondo」のスタジオ・ライヴなのですが、そこに煌びやかな衣装の美女達が大挙して登場する。彼女たちがまた凄い。「Intermezzo From The Karelia Suite」ではカジュアル・スタイルのマネキンが踊っているような感じなのですが、「Rondo」になると一気に異世界。全員がキラキラ光り、それこそ「宇宙大作戦（スタートレック）」や「アウター・リミッツ」からそのまま出てきたような出で立ち。激しく狂うTHE NICEのインタープレイに合わせて身体をくねらせている。もちろん、キースもナイフ片手にオルガンと格闘しており、何とも狂乱の異空間が描かれていくのです。いやはや、60年代って本当に素晴らしいです。
まさに鍵盤のジミヘン。ロック黎明の最中にキーボードの可能性を力ずくで広げたキース・エマーソン。アレンジ・演奏・パフォーマンス……すべてが開拓期の輝きに満ちていたTHE NICEを約１時間に渡って楽しめる大傑作映像です。史上最高峰マスターで集成された極上マルチカメラ・プロショット作品。どうぞ、じっくりとご堪能ください。
