From the 1976 Europe & UK tour that took place after the performance in Japan, London recorded the live performance of March 30th, which is the third day of Hammersmith Odeon, with a good audience recording. Neil Young’s live tour has a reputation for variety, but Hammersmith is different from his first visit to Japan and Paris. Such changes emerged from the opening. The beginning of this day was “On The Way Home”, which is very rare in 1976, and the brighter and more relaxed performance than in the CSNY era seems to be a 1976 tour atmosphere. 日本公演後に行われた1976年ヨーロッパ＆ＵＫツアーより、ロンドンはハマースミス・オデオン3日目となる3月30日のライヴを良質オーディエンス録音で収録。これもまたマニア感涙のレア音源でしょう。収録されたオーディエンス録音はやはりディスタントな音像が特徴ながら、それでいて独特なクリアネスは十分に聴きやすいもの。そこへピッチの正確なアジャストまで加わったのですから、どちらかと言えば敬遠されがちだった31日以外のハマースミス・オデオンのライブを捉えた音源が意外と「聴けて」しまうクオリティであることを再確認してください。
もちろんこちらも遠い音質です。しかしこの日の演奏の充実ぶりはしっかりとキャッチされているのも魅力でしょう。日本公演、特に今回の大阪最終日のような壮絶な演奏とはまた違った充実の演奏、これがツアーの変化というもの。ニール・ヤングのライブ・ツアーは変化に富んでいることがマニアに定評ありますが、初来日公演やパリとも違うのがハマースミスなのです。
そうした変化はオープニングから現れました。この日の幕開けは76年で非常に珍しい「On The Way Home」しかもCSNY時代よりも明るくゆったりとした演奏が76年ツアーらしい雰囲気ではないでしょうか。この時期と言えばオープニングは「Tell Me Why」という印象が俄然強いものですから、この日のオープニングのレアさ加減が引き立ちます。さらに前日に続いて「Midnight On The Bay」も継続して演奏。しかし一番の魅力はいつもなら「Down By The River」をやるところで「Cowgirl In The Sand」を演奏したことでしょう。しかも出来がまた見事なもので、セットリストや内容に関しては間違いなく日本公演と違った大きな魅力を放つ、マニア必聴のレア音源。是非入手してください！
