The MOTLEY CRUE is about to release the biographical film “The Dart: Motley Crew Autobiography” and the covers of his new song “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” and “Like A Virgin” are also hot. This is MOTLEY CRUE of 1985/1986. The tour started from the first visit of the legendary Japan, and swept the earth with a total of 127 performances. This work is the “UK” leg of the late stage. They played their first tour of England in 1984, but at that time they had only 2 shows for the show, including MONSTERS OF ROCK. On the other hand, “THEATER OF PAIN TOUR” realizes a large-scale tour of all nine performances. The Sheffield performance of this work was the concert which is the 7th performance of such “UK”.
This work which recorded such a show is just the name recording of a miracle. What made it to a thing is a master of craftsman “Crazy S.”. 本作に収められているのは「1986年２月13日シェフィールド公演」。そう、Langleyレーベルの大名盤『WELCOME TO THE THEATRE OF PAIN』がアップグレードした超傑作です。本作最大のポイントは奇跡のような極上サウンドにあるわけですが、まずはショウのポジション。全世界を揺るがした“THEATRE OF PAIN TOUR 1985/1986”の全体像から確認してみましょう。

これが1985年／1986年のMOTLEY CRUE。ツアーは伝説の初来日からスタートし、全127公演で地球を席巻しました。本作はその終盤の「英国」レッグ。彼らは1984年に初渡英を果たしていましたが、その際はMONSTERS OF ROCKを含むお披露目的な２公演だけ。それに対し、“THEATRE OF PAIN TOUR”では全９公演の大規模ツアーが実現。あのCHEAP TRICKを前座に従えただけでも驚きですが、現在に至るまで超えるもののないMOTLEY CRUE史上最大の英国ツアー。本作のシェフィールド公演は、そんな「英国」の７公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、まさに奇跡の名録音。モノにしたのは、かの名匠“Crazy S.”氏。80年代を通して名盤・名録音を多数残した人物ですが、彼が本当に神懸かっていた最盛期は1986年にトドメを刺す。この時期は機材やテクニックだけでは説明の付かない異様な録音が多く、アクセプトの『WAR COMMANDER（LANGLEY DELUXE 008）』やトィステッド・シスターの『COME OUT AND PLAY IN NOTTINGHAM (ZODIAC 129)』、オジー・オズボーンの『MONSTERS OF ROCK（Zodiac 192）』、マリリオンの『WELCOME TO THE GARDEN PARTY: MILTON KEYNES 1986（Zodiac 186）』、クイーンの『DEFINITIVE KNEBWORTH 1986（Wardour-320）』、アイアン・メイデンの『CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN LEICESTER (LANGLEY DELUXE 022）』等々、屋内・屋外問わず幾多の歴史的名録音が残されました。
本作もまた、そんな超名録音の１つ。Langleyレーベルから『WELCOME TO THE THEATRE OF PAIN』として紹介されるやあまりの高音質に世界中のマニアが騒然。MOTLEY CRUEオーディエンスの基準そのものをグイッと引き上げてしまいました。すでに長らく廃盤・完売となってきたわけですが、単なる再プレスではありません。“Crazy S.”氏のオリジナル・カセットから最新機材で改めてデジタル化し直したもの。至高の録音の最高峰を更新してしまった超極上盤なのです。実際、そのサウンドは圧倒的。既発盤も世界を驚かせる超クリアサウンドでしたが、本作はさらに鮮やか。会場音響よりも芯がグイグイと迫り、まるで録音ポジションそのものが３・４列ほど前になったようなダイレクト感に生まれ変わっている。名録音なのは分かっていましたが、まさか大元カセットにはここまでの音が記録されていたとは……。改めて奇跡の凄味を突きつけられるアップグレードぶりなのです。
その更新サウンドで描かれるのは、HRの本場イギリス侵攻に燃えるMOTLEY CRUEの熱演。セットは２大名盤『SHOUT AT THE DEVIL』『THEATRE OF PAIN』を濃縮還元した特濃モノ。「Live Wire」やエルヴィスのカバー「Jailhouse Rock」も演奏されはしますが、残りは２枚から綺麗に６曲ずつセレクトされている。「Red Hot」「Louder Than Hell」も『LIVE: ENTERTAINMENT OR DEATH』でも聴けないわけですが、さらに「Use It Or Lose It」「Fight For Your Rights」「Keep Your Eye On The Money」に至っては、このツアーでしか演奏していない。カセット録音の宿命であるテープ・チェンジもドラムソロの合間なので違和感なく、貴重ナンバーも含めたフルステージをサウンドボード裸足な奇跡クオリティで一気体験できるのです。

The main press CD is a miracle super masterpiece left by the master artist “Crazy S.”. It is a live album that will be the highest peak of “THEATER OF PAIN TOUR”. It is “October 19, 1985 Montreal performance” that is included in such this work. It is an audience shot that records the whole story. This work is in 1985 whereas the main story was in 1986, but both are the same “THEATER OF PAIN TOUR”. It was a concert equivalent to the 56 performances of the “North America” ​​tour, as it is said in the main story commentary schedule.
This work that recorded such a show is just a great masterpiece of shooting the audience. It is shooting from a stand with the stage in front, but the amazing feeling of stability and superb view. I think that it was the front row of the stand seats, the shade of the front visitor was not reflected at all, only the stage occupies the view. Stand stands mean that there is a distance, but it is a bold zoom to offset it. This is really ugly. Vince Neal and Nicky Six are running around the stage on a large and endless basis, but the screen is not disturbed at all as it rushes there. Though it has been involuntarily long by camera work alone, the master freshness to convey such a design to the present age is not a hammer either. There is no dubbing mark as it is digitized directly from the recently excavated master tape, and is further polished with digital mastering. It is the beauty of the image that the scene at that time is reproduced exactly in front of you.
The quality is drawn in the full show of MOTLEY CRUE which tries to catch the whole world. The main story press CD was also uncut except for the tape change, but this is only North America on the main battlefield and the show itself is long. In addition to the same songs as the main press CDs, he also performed “Piece Of Your Action” and “Knock ‘Em Dead Kid”. This allows you to witness up to 8 out of 11 songs (including In The Beginning) of “SHOUT AT THE DEVIL”.
And the main thing is the drum solo by all means. I did not rotate or move the coaster as I did in the later years, but I just tilted forward 90 degrees, but at that time it was just an impact. 本編プレスCDは、名匠“Crazy S.”が残した奇跡の超傑作。“THEATRE OF PAIN TOUR”の最高峰となるライヴアルバムです。そんな本編が録音のミラクルだとすれば、本作は映像のミラクル。オーディエンス記録の超傑作を同時に味わっていただける豪華セット決定です。
そんな本作に収められているのは「1985年10月19日モントリオール公演」。その一部始終を記録したオーディエンス・ショットです。本編が1986年だったのに対して本作は1985年ですが、どちらも同じ“THEATRE OF PAIN TOUR”。本編解説の日程で言うところの「北米」ツアー56公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、まさに客席撮影の大傑作。ステージを正面に据えたスタンド席からの撮影なのですが、驚くべきは猛烈な安定感と絶景。スタンド席の最前列だったのか、前方客の陰が一切映り込まず、ステージだけが視界を占領する。スタンド席ということは距離があるということですが、それを相殺するのが果敢なズーム。これが本当に凄い。ヴィンス・ニールやニッキー・シックスが広いステージを縦横無尽に走り回るわけですが、そこにグイグイと迫りながら画面がまったく乱れない。思いっきり引けばステージの全景を見渡せ、最ズームではメンバーが画面半分になるほど迫る。当時の機材の限界ギリギリまで近づき、その猛アップのまま左右に振る。普通であれば、手ブレで見られた物にならなくても仕方がないのに、安定している。三脚は使っていないようですが、どうやってここまでビシッとした撮影ができるのか……。
思わずカメラワークだけで長くなってしまいましたが、そんな意匠を現代に伝えるマスター鮮度もハンパじゃない。最近になって発掘されたマスターテープから直接デジタル化されただけにダビング痕は皆無で、さらにデジタル・マスタリングで磨き込まれている。まさに当時の光景がそっくりそのまま目の前に再現される映像美なのです。
そのクオリティで描かれるのは、全世界を手中にせんとするMOTLEY CRUEのフルショウ。本編プレスCDもテープチェンジ以外はノーカットでしたが、こちらは主戦場の北米だけあってショウ自体が長い。本編プレスCDと同じ全曲に加え、「Piece Of Your Action」や「Knock ‘Em Dead Kid」まで披露。これにより『SHOUT AT THE DEVIL』の全11曲中８曲（In The Beginningも含む）まで目撃できる。
そして何と言っても目玉はドラムソロ。後年のように回転やコースター移動はせず、前方に90度傾いていくだけですが、当時はこれだけで衝撃だった。本作には観客の姿は映らないものの、その盛り上がりは超リアルに感じ取れる。このシーンばかりはやはり映像あってこそのスペクタクルです。
