Unreleased Studio Sessions in 1978-1981

The legendary label “So What”, which received tremendous trust from Miles Davis lovers and produced numerous masterpieces. Under the complete supervision of the “So What” label, “Voodoo Down Records” was launched at the end of 2020. The depth of trust can be seen from the fact that it was allowed to list the label name of “SO WHAT!” For the first time. Careful remastering, discerning artwork with obi, and a beautiful picture disc press board. This is the 5th release from this label, which is already attracting attention as a must-have item for Miles collectors despite being a new label.
This is the first “studio session” thing since the first “Unreleased Bitches Brew Session”. I heard the voices of the fans saying, “It’s about time for a collection of sessions for’Kind of Blue’,” but I was happy to disappoint that expectation, and the fans have handed it down as “Comeback Sessions.” It will be the appearance of a valuable session that was being held. Miles, who came to Japan in 1975, produced super-heavyweight masterpieces called “Agartha” and “Pangaea”, and the impact went into a period of inactivity without cooling. This pause was lifted with the release of “The Man with the Horn” in 1981 and the resumption of concert tours, including performances in Japan. At that time, fans would have been waiting for the release of “The Man with the Horn”. Meanwhile, Miles, who was on hiatus, wasn’t just lying on the living sofa every day and watching TV. He secretly held sessions and repeated experiments in search of new directions. What is recorded here is the culmination of the sessions that took place during this break, commonly known as “comeback sessions.” The 1978 session on Disc 1 was a super rare member, with Larry Coryell on guitar and TM Stevens on bass. Drums is a safe Al Foster. Mr. Yasuki Nakayama, a Miles researcher, wrote that “Maybe Miles just gave instructions at the control booth”, but the organ with a fairly Miles tone echoed everywhere, and it was in the studio session. It seems that he would have participated as well. However, this session itself was a phantom session without any album being produced by this member. The 1981 session of the disc includes two sessions of “Back Seat Betty” recorded in “The Man with the Horn”. Both of these are alternate versions and both are long versions that exceed 10 minutes. In particular, Alternate 2 is an enthusiastic performance of nearly 20 minutes. And the 1980 session recorded on Disc 2 is a popular theory with the session for “Shout” recorded in “The Man with the Horn”, but it is almost a different song. However, this song is a very good pop and funky masterpiece. It is recorded that they are exploring the completed form and trying sessions with various approaches. It is a phantom masterpiece because it is an unreleased song despite its very high degree of perfection. It can be said that the members are still in a transitional session until the members of the resurrection tour are decided before joining Marcus Miller.
Both are valuable sessions focusing on the trajectory of the revival of Emperor Miles, and are a must-have session collection following the “Unreleased Bitches Brew Session”.

マイルス・デイヴィスの愛好家から絶大の信頼を受け、数々の名盤を生み出した伝説のレーベル“ソー・ホワット”。その“ソー・ホワット”レーベルの完全監修を受け、2020年末に発足したのが“ヴードゥーダウン・レコーズ”です。初めて“SO WHAT!”のレーベル名を記載することを許可されたことからも信頼の厚さがうかがえます。丁寧なリマスタリングに、こだわりの帯付アートワーク、美麗なピクチャー・ディスクのプレス盤。新鋭レーベルながら早くもマイルス・コレクター必携アイテムとして注目を集めている本レーベルから第五弾のリリースです。
今回リリースとなるのは第一弾の『アンリリースド・ビッチェズ・ブリュー・セッション』以来となる“スタジオ・セッション”モノです。「そろそろ『カインド・オブ・ブルー』のセッション集が出るのでは」というファンの声もチラホラ聞こえてきましたが、心地よくその期待を裏切らせていただき、ファンの間では通称“カムバック・セッションズ”として語り継がれていた貴重なセッションの登場となります。1975年来日したマイルスは『アガルタ』と『パンゲア』と言う超重量級傑作を生みだし、その衝撃も冷めやらぬままに活動休止期間へと入ってしまうのです。この休止期間が解けたのは1981年『ザ・マン・ウィズ・ザ・ホーン』のリリース、そして来日公演含むコンサートツアーの再開でした。当時ファンはこの『ザ・マン・ウィズ・ザ・ホーン』のリリースを首を長くして待っていたことでしょう。一方休止期間を取っていたマイルス、毎日リヴィングのソファーで横になってテレビを見ていただけではありませんでした。密かにセッションを行い新たな方向を探る実験を繰り返していたのです。ここに収録されているのはまさにこの休止期間中に行われていたセッション、通称“カムバック・セッションズ”の集大成です。ディスク1の1978年のセッションは激レア・メンバーでギターはラリー・コリエルにベースはTM・スティーヴンス。ドラムスは安心のアル・フォスターです。マイルス研究家の中山康樹氏は「マイルスはコントロール・ブースで指示を出していただけではないだろうか」と記していましたが、かなりマイルス的な音色のオルガンが随所で響いており、スタジオのセッションにも参加していたであろうと思われます。しかしこのセッション自体は元より、このメンバーでアルバムが制作されることは無く幻のセッションとなったのです。同ディスクの1981年のセッションは『ザ・マン・ウィズ・ザ・ホーン』に収録された『バック・シート・ベティ』のセッションが二つ。これらはどちらもオルタネート・ヴァージョンでどちらも10分を超えるロング・ヴァージョン。とくにオルタネート2は20分近い熱演です。そしてディスク2に収録の1980年のセッションは『ザ・マン・ウィズ・ザ・ホーン』収録の『シャウト』の為のセッションとの通説となっていますが、ほとんど別曲です。しかしこの曲かなり上質なポップでファンキーな名曲。それを完成形を探り様々なアプローチでセッションを試みている様が収録されています。完成度が非常に高いにもかかわらず未発表曲となっているため幻の名曲です。メンバーもまだマーカス・ミラー参加前で復活ツアーのメンバーが決まるまでの過渡期のセッションと言えます。
いずれも帝王マイルス復活までの軌跡にフォーカスした貴重なセッションで、『アンリリースド・ビッチェズ・ブリュー・セッション』に続く必携セッション集です。
