この歴史的共演がどれほど歴史的か……想えば想うほどメーター上がってしまうのですが、そんな自分をグッとこらえつつ、この世紀のライヴアルバムをご紹介いたしましょう。本作は、先日行われたMICHAEL SCHENKER’S TEMPLE OF ROCKとGRAHAM BONNET BANDの大阪公演と名古屋公演を記録したオーディエンス・アルバムです。大注目シェンカー&ボネットの共演はもちろんのこと、2公演・2バンドを、あらゆる手段を講じて最上サウンドで完全録音したプレス4CDです!
本作を録音したのは、HR/HMを魂レベルで愛する傑作録音製造機、“西日本最強テーパー”氏。中部・関西会場のスウィートスポットを知り尽くしている氏ですが、今回ばかりはいつにも増して気合いが凄い。今回のツアーは、歴史的共演が事前にアナウンスされていたこともあって、どの会場も満員御礼。近年、HR/HMではなかなか聞かれないチケット争奪戦まで起こりました。そんな中で、“最強テーパー”氏は最高音質をモノにするため、文字通り“あらゆる手段”を講じてベストシートを確保したそうです。実のところ、今回のツアーは、会場のPA環境が理想的とは言えず(特に大阪!)、歴史的共演に似つかわしくないサウンドに、ネット上でも「なんでこんなに音が悪いんだ!」と不満が噴出する始末。正直な話、他のテーパー諸氏から寄せられたマスターをいくつか聴いてみても、こもりまくり、爆音ギリギリばかりで「これじゃなぁ……」というレベルでした。ところが! “最強テーパー”氏の本作から聞こえてくるのは、そんな会場の真実さえもかき消す、ド級の美麗サウンドなのです。音の悪い録音をお聴かせしても仕方ないので公表はしませんが、本当なら聞き比べていただきたいくらい。これが、本当に同じライヴを録音したものなのか!?!? みなさん誰でも「お、良い音だね!」と思うでしょうが、もし実際に大阪公演をご覧になっていたら「こんなに良い音の場所があったの!?」と腰を抜かすことでしょう。“最強テーパー”氏はニヤッと笑いながら「ちょっと言えない額を使ったよ」と言っていましたが、これは、たしかに……。
そんな“最強テーパー”氏の気迫は、名古屋公演でも爆発! 大阪公演は、現場のモコモコ音を覆してみせた驚愕録音でもあったわけですが、こちらはあらゆる枕詞が不要な超スーパーサウンド。高音から低音まで、あらゆる音域がサウンドボード・レベル……と言いますか、こんな陳腐な言葉で形容してしまうのが申し訳ないほどにウルトラクリア・サウンドなのです。それもそのはず、超満員オールスタンディングの名古屋ダイヤモンドホールで、“最強テーパー”氏は最前列を死守。PAの出力音のダイレクト録音を成功させているのです。すし詰め大熱狂の会場で、大歓声が楽音を邪魔しないとは……。だからと言ってラインのような味気ないサウンドかというと、さにあらず。前からPAダイレクトの楽音がクリア極まりなく響きつつ、後頭部の方から生々しい大熱狂が押し寄せる立体サンドイッチ感覚のサウンドなのです。なんなんだ、この録音は!?
本作を聴いたあなたは「良いポジションって凄いんだなぁ」と思われる事でしょう。ですが、そうではないのです。数多くの名テーパーたちが地元のスウィートスポットを探り、自分なりのポジションを確立している。しかし、“最強テーパー”氏は、それ以上。ポジションの特性に合わせ、機材もシチュエーションに応じて絶妙に変えているのです。ある時は遠方から会場反響を計算して迫力を抽出し、ある時はPAダイレクトを狙いつつ、歓声の立体感も拾う指向性を選ぶ……会場のスウィートスポットだけでなく、バンドの音楽性、コンサートの特性までトータルに計算している。誇り高きマニアのコア世界においても、“最強”の名でお呼びするのには、それなりの理由があるのです。

あまりに素晴らしいサウンドをお伝えしたく長くなってしまいましたが、そこまでの音質で綴られた本作の主役は、シェンカー&ボネットの歴史的共演に他ありません。かの英雄たちの共演は、まさに長年の夢です(いえ、もう「でした」なんですよね……)。歴史に残る超名盤「黙示録」を創り上げながら、彼らが同じステージに立ったのは「1982年8月27日シェフィールド工業芸術大学」のみ。それも、途中で“あの”事件が起き、グラハムがステージ放棄してしまった伝説の1回だけなのですから。その後、2005年にもNAMMのショウケース・ギグで“共演する”と発表されましたが、当日(!)になってグラハムが体調を崩してドタキャン。これらの歴史を知っている方ほど、GRAHAM BONNET BANDの後でマイケル・シェンカーが出てきても、“まだ分からないぞ……”と不安が拭えなかった事でしょう。
そして、歴史が変わる瞬間は、共演はTEMPLE OF ROCKのセット終盤の「Desert Song」で訪れました。ただでさえ、マイケルが「Desert Song」を弾くのは1983年以来になるわけですが、そこへドゥギー・ホワイトが“Legendary”という言葉で紹介し、ステージ端から歩いてくるグラハム……ついに、ついに! 衝撃に大気が凍りつく大阪の緊張感、感情が爆発する名古屋の大歓声。どちらも、現場で世紀の瞬間を目撃しているオーディエンスの激情が乗り移ってくるようです。あのリフ、あの歌詞、そして甘美なるあのソロ……その総てを、マイケル・シェンカーとグラハム・ボネットの2人が奏でているっ!!
もうひとつの共演曲は、アンコールでの「Assault Attack」。やはりドゥギーの「Please welcome, Graham Bonneeeeet!!!」の雄叫びに応えるようにグラハムが再登場。ここではグラハム→ドゥギーと歌い継ぐデュエットとなったわけですが、ドゥギーも米国ツアーとはまるで違う絶好調のノド。「どうせならグラハムが全部歌って……」との想いが頭をよぎる頃には、マイケルの甘美なソロが響き渡り、再びグラハムの猛々しい声が轟く。素晴らしい、なんて素晴らしいんだ!

実際、聴いていても信じられない気持ちばかりが渦巻く中、ラストの「Blackout」がダメ押しして歴史的なショウは幕を閉じます。たった2曲×2公演のご紹介だけで字数を使い切ってしまいましたが、2バンドでRAINBOW5曲、UFO5曲、SCORPIONS5曲、MSG3曲、ALCATRAZZ2曲、それに「Night Games」と、80年代の名曲群がこれでもか!と目白押しのステージ。さらにはグラハムの最新ソロ「Mirror Lies」やTEMPLE OF ROCKが6曲(「Saviour Machine」は大阪が世界初演!)といった最新型のマイケル、グラハムもスパイスになっていて、退屈するヒマさえない4枚組なのです。
歴史的な共演。その第一夜と第二夜を、現場の会場でさえ聴けないベストポジション・サウンドで真空パックしたプレス4CD。さぁ、さぁ、さぁ! 目撃された方も、居合わせられなかった方も、心ゆくまで存分にお楽しみください!!!
