This is the whole picture of “Ride the Lightning Tour”. Basically, 80 performances of “Europe” + “North America # 2” are the main, and special performances such as festival appearances are scattered around it. “MONSTERS OF ROCK” of this work was an oversized and highlight stage. After all, Donington is special among specials. Especially for Lars and Kirk who love NWOBHM, it is the biggest stage in the UK that the heroes who are longing for themselves are aiming for. They were called from the stage where even MOTORHEAD, which they worship as a god, had never stood (MOTORHEAD first appeared in 1986). Moreover, Donington continued to be special after that. They have stood in the sanctuary four times at MONSTERS OF ROCK and four times at DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, even surpassing their native hero IRON MAIDEN. 本編プレスCDはMETALLICAの名作と言うだけでなく、音楽ジャンル「ヘヴィメタル」の奇跡とも言うべき超名盤。本来、工業用語であるはずの言葉で形容される珍妙な音楽の魅力が最大限に輝いている歴史的名録音です。そのボーナスには、1985年のMETALLICAだけが持っていた魔力を目撃できるプロショット映像をご用意しました。
そんな本作に封じ込まれた映像は大まかに３種類。個別にご紹介しましょう。
【1985年９月14日METAL HAMMER FESTIVAL（TV放送版）】
メインとなるのは「1985年９月14日METAL HAMMER FESTIVAL」のテレビ放送プロショット。かの『CLIFF ‘EM ALL』にも採用された映像で、「DAY ON THE GREEN」と並んで初期METALLICAを象徴するプロショットです。実のところ、この映像は『RIDE THE LIGHTNING』ボックスで完全版が公式化されてもいるわけですが、本作はあの巨大ボックスが登場する前に最高峰だった放送バージョン。５曲止まりではあるものの、『CLIFF ‘EM ALL』では観られなかった「Ecstasy Of Gold」「Creeping Death」「Disposable Heroes」も楽しめる決定版でした。
もちろん、TV放送だからこそリアル・タイム感は現代でも……いえ、現代だからこそ一層鮮烈。「METAL HAMMER VOL.1」のロゴが飛び交い、「Seek And Destroy」では「クールだろ！」と言わんばかりに時代がかったチープな映像処理が施される。現場そのままなオフィシャル版も良いですが、本作は編集や演出からも強烈に“1985年の薫り”が吹き出すのです。
【1985年９月14日METAL HAMMER FESTIVAL（リメイド版）】
続いて登場するのは、TV放送を元に海外マニアが編集し直したバージョン。TVバージョンでは放送枠に沿って曲順も変更されていましたが、ここでは海外マニアが現場通りに再編集。さらにクリフ・バートンのベースソロ「Anesthesia」を加えています。
それにしても、1985年のMETALLICAはやはり強烈。全編で穴あきジーンズも若々しいパフォーマンスが眩しいのですが、特に衝撃的なのは「Disposable Heroes」。当時のMETALLICAは、名盤『RIDE THE LIGHTNING』のリリースから１年２ヶ月。「MASTER OF PUPPETS」の録音が始まって２週間ほどのタイミングであり、これが全世界初公開の初演なのです。
【４種の放送を集成したボーナス映像集】
そして、３つはボーナス映像集。1986年から1989年までの４つのテレビ放送が収録されていますが、特に面白いのは1986年と1988年の日本放送でしょうか。1986年はお馴染みの評論家がDJを務める番組で、初来日時のMETALLICAを招いて、リハーサル風景とインタビュー・シーンで構成されています。超貴重なリハーサル・シーンはもちろんですが、時代感覚溢れるインタビューも凄まじく面白い。PMRCのメタル・バッシングが吹き荒れていた時代柄か、お茶の間の親御さんを意識した質問を投げかける評論家と、何にも考えていない若きMETALLICAの返答のすれ違いがなんとも痛快！ 『..AND JUSTICE FOR ALL』時代の1988年インタビューも、時代感覚にむせ返るよう。
すべてを書き起こすような野暮はいたしませんが、ひとつ例を挙げると、「どうしてPVを作らないのか？」という質問に対し、ラーズ・ウルリッヒは「金がないのさ」、ジェイムズ・ヘットフィールドは「作るのを忘れちまうんだ」とトボけつつ、「絶対じゃないよ、良いアイディアがあれば……」と答える。後に映画『ジョニーは戦場へ行った』を使用した「One」のPVで一大センセーションを巻き起こすわけですが、その直前の素直な心情が語られるのです。1986年、1988年とも日本語字幕もありますので、英語が不得手な方にも、この面白さは十二分にご堪能いただけるでしょう。
名盤『RIDE THE LIGHTNING』でメタル革命を引き起こし、今まさに代表作『MASTER OF PUPPETS』を生みだそうとしていた1985年のMETALLICA。そのバンド・ポテンシャルが爆発する超充実パフォーマンスが味わえるだけでなく、クリフの悲劇前後のMETALLICAの素顔も堪能できる逸品プロショット集です。この充実感は、名作『CLIFF ‘EM ALL』に匹敵すると言ってもいい。世界中にメタル革命を振りまいていた時代のMETALLICAを、目から耳から最高クオリティで味わい尽くせる１本。ぜひ、歴史的な超名演『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1985』と共に、心ゆくまでご堪能ください！
