以上、全３公演。本作の大阪公演は初日にあたるショウでした。そんな本作の最大のポイントは、30周年の感慨……ではありません。それさえも吹っ飛ぶ凄まじいクオリティ！　いかな30周年とは言っても、ダメ録音でプレスはいたしません。純粋に「コイツは永久保存しとかなくちゃ」の凄まじいサウンドなのです。
何しろ、本作をモノにしたのは当代きっての名録音家“西日本最強テーパー”氏。その彼のコレクションでも特上の逸品なのです。現場となった“Zepp Osaka Bayside”は、今年２月に誕生したばかりの新会場なのですが、“最強”氏はすでに攻略済み。現在は銘打ての録音家の方々もまだ音響を把握し切れていないというのに、スティーヴン・タイラーの超傑作『OSAKA 2017（Zodiac 244）』で「まるでサウンドボード」「現場より良い音」を実現してしまったのです。本作もまた、“最強”氏しか知らない必勝の方程式が炸裂しているのです。
実際、本作のサウンドは迷いなく「まるでサウンドボード」の言葉を捧げられるもの。冒頭、ANTHRAXの開演を告げる「Can’t Turn You Loose（映画『BLUES BROTHERS』でお馴染み）」からしてウルトラ・クリア。それこそ、サウンドボードどころか公式ライヴアルバム級のサウンドが一気に広がるのです。すべての楽音が強烈なのですが、特に素晴らしいのはシンバルとヴォーカル。鋭いシンバルの残響ゼロっぷりは、本当にドラムにマイクをセッティングしたんじゃないかと思うほど。そして、精緻なギターとベースがリフの壁を作る中、それをぶち破るヴォーカルも超鮮明です。
さらにオフィシャル風なのが大歓声。クリアな「Can’t Turn You Loose」に「うぉー！」の大声援が巻き上がるのですが、このバランスが本当にオフィシャル盤かのよう。１人の声が飛び抜けるようなことなく、群衆ならではのきめ細やかな喝采が立ち上る。それをねじ伏せるように轟くスラッシュ・メタル……。このバランスは“最強”氏の入念な機材選びとセッティングの賜ですが、さらに加えてポジションの力も大きい。今回はほぼ満員の大盛況だったそうですが、２階席の最前席をご友人たちとキープ。１階席からサーファーも大暴れする大熱狂が湯気のように立ち上りつつ、間近にはオーディエンス・ノイズが皆無なのです。そして、２階最前だからこそ真っ直ぐに遮蔽物ゼロの楽音が飛び込み、距離感は機材セッティングで相殺。現場を体験された方からは「結構ダンゴだった」とうかがっているのですが、本作のサウンドからはそうは思えない。まさに「現場より良い音」というヤツなのでしょう……。
その凄味がさらに炸裂するのがヘッドラインのMEGADETH。ANTHRAXも凄まじいサウンドでしたが、MEGADETHはさらにグイッとクリア。ANTHRAXのリフが“壁”だったのに対し、MEGADETHは１音１音が弾丸となって連射される感覚です。念のために申し上げておきますが、ANTHRAXのサウンドが劣っているわけではありません。この違いは現場ＰＡによるものでして、言わば「バンドが出すサウンドの個性」。それを忠実、克明に描ききっているのです。

そして、それに相応しいほど新曲が素晴らしい。全米３位＆グラミー賞獲得というだけでなく、曲自体が恐ろしくカッコ良く、重戦車の如き“ヘヴィMEGADETH”のド迫力が凄まじい。新加入のダーク・ヴェルビューレンは元SOILWORKの名手ですし、キコ・ルーレイロは言わずもがなの天才ギタリスト。スター両名が大成功ツアーを重ねることでMEGADETHにも馴染み、まさに黄金期の輝きで魅せてくれる。そして肝心要のデイヴ・ムステインも素晴らしい。かつてのキーとは違うものの、だからこそ滲むヘヴィネスに相応しいドス声の凄味。一時はそれでも声が出なくて苦しんでいましたが、本作では見事に復活してくれました。
そんなMEGADETHに対する観客も灼熱。巷では「DYSTOPIAはRUST IN PEACE以来の傑作」とも囁かれていますが、それを裏付けるかのように本作でも熱く燃え上がった会場の熱気が凄い。実際、今回のツアーは東京２公演がソールドアウトで、大阪もほぼ満員。２-３階席が閉鎖となっていた2年前の大阪公演がウソのような逆転特大ホームランの如きハイパーライヴなのです。

いまだ衰えず、長いキャリアに裏打ちされた堂々のライヴを見せつけるANTHRAX。その名バンドを従え、新たなる黄金期を満喫するMEGADETH。単に“初来日30周年カップリング”というだけでなく、それぞれに凄まじくメタリックなショウを叩きつけてくれるライヴアルバムです。
正直な話、いかに“THE BIG 2/4”とは言ってもCDRリリースを予定しておりました。しかし、ここまで凄いサウンド、凄いスラッシュメタルを叩きつけられたら、永久保存プレスするしかないじゃないですか。２年前、やはり“最強”氏の超傑作SLAYER『REPENTLESS IN OSAKA（Zodiac 149）』をお届けしましたが、それ以来の超メタル。今なお、突っ走り続けるANTHRAX＆MEGADETHがずっしり詰まった一大巨編。もし、あなたが既に死んでいるなら仕方がない。しかし2017年に生きるメタル者なら、これを聴かずに何とする。さぁ、食らいやがれっ!!
