77年「SIMPLE DREAMS」ツアーと言えばオーストラリアのテレビ局が収録と放送を行った12月のアトランタが定番。この映像に関してもMASTERPORTレーベルから名作プレスDVD「ATLANTA 1977」がリリース済ですが、今回はそれより二か月前、ロスアンジェルスのユニヴァーサル・アンフィシアターで行われたステージを収録。前年のアルバム「HASTEN DOWN THE WIND」の大ヒットで人気が爆発したリンダは「SIMPLE DREAMS」のリリースによって遂にスターダムを獲得する位置にまで昇格。このアルバムの為のツアーは77年8月下旬からスタートしますが、その最初のハイライトとなったのが9月下旬から10月下旬にかけてのユニヴァーサル・アンフィシアター12夜連続公演。そのすべてのチケットがソールドアウトとなり連日大盛況。その千秋楽が今回リリースされる10月3日でした。

76年ボストン「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」はリンダの70年代ライブ音源の中でも「稀代の名盤」と呼んで差し支えないほどのウルトラ・クオリティを誇りました。今回もそれに匹敵するほどのクオリティ、しかもLAでのライブとなれば…そう、このショーを録音したのは、かのマイク・ミラードだったのです。彼にとって1977年と言えば「イヤー・オブ・エディ」な一年。それこそ稀代の名録音を生み出してくれた訳ですが、LAフォーラムでの熱狂から数か月後、リンダのコンサートにも出向いていたとは意外な事実でしょう。
逆に言えばミラードが録音したくなるほど当時の彼女は人気絶頂だったという訳です。そもそもミラードのユニヴァーサル・アンフィシアターと言えば翌年のボブ・ディランのステージを最高の音質で捉えてくれたことが思い出されますが、この日のリンダも完璧な音質で捉えているからお見事。
アトランタのプロショットDVDは画質面において申し分なかったのですが、サウンドボード音声の方はどちらかというと卓直結に近いバランス。よって演奏アンサンブルのクリアネスは申し分なかったのですが、臨場感の希薄さが否めなかった。ましてや人気絶頂期です。その点で本領発揮なのが今回のミラード録音。アンフィシアターならではの親密さと人気が頂点に達した臨場感をしっかりとキャッチしてくれている。とは言っても演奏をかき消したり、あるいは耳を突くような盛り上がりは皆無。そこはミラード録音、あくまでも主人公はリンダの声と熟練ミュージシャンによる演奏なのです。
となると「高音質」、あるいは「まるでサウンドボード」という枕詞すら生ぬるい。もはやサウンドボードそのものかと錯覚しそうなほどのウルトラ・クオリティはそれだけで全音楽ファンに一聴の価値があると断言します。それが人気絶頂期のリンダ・ライブともなれば、これはもうマニアでなくとも楽しめること請け合い。おまけに今回はJEMSがファースト・ジェネレーション・コピーを元にして公開してくれたバージョンを元にしていますので、限定プレスCDリリースに当たっての調整もほとんど必要なかった。

そして何よりも驚かされるのが、これが12夜連続公演の最終日とは思えないほど絶好調なリンダの声。正に「パンチのある歌声」という表現がピッタリくる歌唱は本当に素晴らしい。シンガーソングライター全盛の1970年代において、あくまでもシンガーであることを通したリンダが遂に爆発した人気を後ろ盾にして堂々たるショーを繰り広げる様は圧巻。一回のステージがCD一枚に収まる長さであったことも、そのような連続公演を可能としたのだと思われますが、トリプル・プラチナ・ディスクを記録するほどの大ヒットを記録した「SIMPLE DREAMS」ツアーは、遂にこの後アリーナへと会場を拡大させます。それだけに、このリラックスしたムードのシアター公演を完璧な音質で捉えてくれた音源の価値はリンダの歴史的にも重要なもの。
実は「SIMPLE DREAMS」ツアーは開始直後にキーボード・プレイヤーのドン・グロルニックが交通事故に遭ってしまい、前年のツアーではギターを弾いていたソングライターのアンドリュー・ゴールドがキーボードに移る形で継続となり、実際にここの日もバンドメンバーの交代を余儀なくされたことをリンダが告げています。むしろそうしたハプニングすら跳ね返さんばかりなバンドの結束力が伝わってくるのもミラード録音のウルトラ・クオリティならでは。ライブ終盤「You’re No Good」でのケニー・エドワーズのベース・ソロからワディ・ワクテルのギター・ソロが続く場面などはサウンドボードでも捉え切れないのでは？と思えるほどの生々しさ。人気の頂点を迎えたリンダ最高のステージを究極の音質で捉えてくれた、マイク・ミラードの新たな傑作が登場です！

The main story press CD is a live album of a miracle that was born from that 1st generation of Mike Miller’s recording. As I mentioned in the commentary, when it comes to the symbol of the ‘SIMPLE DREAMS’ era, which became the biggest hit film of the 70’s, there is no other than multi-camera pro shot of the Atlanta performance. Therefore, the highest peak master of this large standard picture is attached as a bonus.
That’s why, this film was filmed “Dec. 1, 1977 Atlanta show”. The show was shot as a pro shot for a television broadcast, but it wasn’t in the home country of America, but in Australia, where she boasted huge popularity at the time. The filming staff is also a crew member of the Australian broadcaster, and after being broadcast only once at that time, it is a professional shot of a phantom that has not been realized again. Of course, there was also a bad aircheck master from old times, but this work is the highest peak version that wiped out such a group of already released. と言うわけで、本作が撮影されたのは「1977年12月１日アトランタ公演」。このショウはテレビ放送のためにプロショット撮影されたわけですが、その放送が実現したのは母国アメリカではなく、当時彼女が絶大な人気を誇っていたオーストラリア。撮影スタッフもオーストラリア放送局のクルーであり、当時一度だけ放送された後、再放送の実現していない幻のプロショットなのです。もちろん、古くから劣悪なエアチェック・マスターも知られてはいたのですが、本作はそんな既発群を一掃した最高峰版。エアチェックではなく、現存する業務用マスター・テープからダイレクトにデジタル化されたものなのです。
実際、本作のクオリティはかつてない映像美。さすがに42年前の幻映像だけに現代基準では「オフィシャル級」とは言えないものの、当時であれば十分に言える。何よりも業務用マスターならではのダビング痕のない瑞々しさが素晴らしく、テープヨレどころか白線ノイズもほとんどなく（数カ所一瞬だけ入るので「皆無」とは言えませんが）、デニム＆ブーツにノースリーヴで熱唱するリンダの姿が美しく描かれる。サウンド面では「Lose Again」「Crazy（の後半）」「Poor Poor Pitiful Me」「Love Is A Rose」「Maybe I’m Right」の５曲でやや落ちるものの、それでも当時のテレビ放送なら当然のレベル。他15曲は極上サウンドボードで全盛の歌声とベスト・メンバーと呼ばれたアンサンブルをたっぷりと楽しめるのです。
そんなクオリティで描かれる名曲群がとにかく素晴らしい。セットは『Don’t Cry Now』以降に絞り込みつつ、３大ヒット作『HEART LIKE A WHEEL』『HASTEN DOWN THE WIND』『SIMPLE DREAMS』の濃縮還元。特に軸となるのは最大ヒット『SIMPLE DREAMS』の大盤振る舞いで、本編プレスCDより２ヶ月が過ぎたせいか、さらに３曲「Maybe I’m Right」「It’s So Easy」「Sorrow Lives Here」が増量（その代わり「Heart Like A Wheel」がセット落ちしています）。その結果アルバム全10曲中７曲が歌われるのです。もちろん、過去のレパートリーでは従来のカントリー・スタイルも味わえますし、ワディ・ワクテルのギターを要としたロック・カラーと融合させた当時ならではの幅広いアレンジも素晴らしい。次作『LIVING IN THE USA』に収録される事になるエルヴィスの「Love Me Tender」でも見事な歌声を聴かせてくれます。
