“LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN” became an unexpectedly big hit title because it captured not only the finest audience album by Mike Millard but also the live performance of Linda Ronstadt peak It was a pleasant surprise. マイク・ミラードによる極上オーディエンス・アルバムということだけに留まらず、リンダ・ロンシュタット絶頂期のライブ・パフォーマンスを捉えてくれていたことから「LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN」が思わぬ大ヒット・タイトルとなってしまったことは嬉しい驚きでした。それだけではありません、今から10年以上前にリリースされていたミラード録音をも凌ぐ稀代の極上録音を収めた名盤「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」までもが再評価を受けて好セールスの相乗効果を生み出すほどだったのです。考えてみればリンダほどのアーティストのライブ音源アイテムが今まで少なすぎたのではないでしょうか。それが1976年から77年という文句なしの人気絶頂期ともなればなおさら。
それまでにもアルバムがヒットしていたリンダですが、76年8月に「HASTEN DOWN THE WIND」がリリースされると人気はいよいよスーパースターの域へと到達。これによって同年の下半期というのはその人気爆発と比例して映像や音源が恵まれています。中でも11月のヨーロッパ・ツアーからはロンドンとオッフェンバッハという二種類のプロショット映像が生み出されただけでなく、アムステルダムでのラジオ放送音源まで存在するという充実ぶり。
このヨーロッパ・ツアーを終えた後で再びアメリカに戻って大成功の一年を締めくくったツアーの一夜を捉えたのが、あの超絶クオリティのオーディンス・アルバム「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」でした。

よって11月から12月にかけては音源も映像も大充実期だと呼べるのですが、そんな絶頂期の収録ラッシュの狼煙を上げたのが11月3日のユニバーサル・アンフィシアター公演。こちらは70年代アメリカ・ロック界において大物アーティストのライブの数々を放送してくれたキング・ビスケット・フラワー・アワー（以下KBFHと称します）による収録が行われました。リンダは9月に同会場での連続公演（奇しくも一年後の「LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN」のと同じ会場。当時の彼女にとっていわばホームだったのでしょう）をこなしていますが、その後でヨーロッパ・ツアーの開始直前というタイミングに一日だけ再びアンフィシアターに戻って行われたショー。ということはKBFHの収録用に行われた特別なステージだったと思われます。
この放送用音源は権利関係の隙間を縫って現在「WILLIN’ IN L.A.」というタイトルにてグレーゾーンCDがリリース済。これは一世を風靡した「CONCERT VAULT」サイトの音源を拝借したタイトルだったのです。しかし今回のリリースに当たって元にしたのは最近になってネット上に登場した放送用マスター・リールであり、ボストンの放送局WBCNが所有していたバージョン。
その音質は非常に素晴らしく、例の「CONCERT VAULT」をも凌ぐハイクオリティ。このままオフィシャルにリリースしてグレーゾーンCD「WILLIN’ IN L.A.」を一蹴出来てしまうかと思えるほど。唯一の欠点としてラストの「Someone To Lay Down Beside Me」が未収録でしたので、同曲だけ「CONCERT VAULT」から改めて収録して内容に完璧を期しています。断じて「WILLIN’ IN L.A.」からのパイレートではありません。

確かに「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」はリンダのオーディンス・レコーディング史上ワールド・ベストに輝く音源だった訳ですが、それでも放送用にきっちりとミキシングが施された本音源には及ばない。例えば「You’re No Good」でワディ・ワクテルとダン・ダグモア二人のギターが左右に分かれ、彼らのプレイが克明に聞き取れる様を前にすると、やはりステレオ・サウンドボード録音にかなうものはない…そう思わずにはいられません。
それに何と言っても「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」のショーは大成功の余裕と自信がたっぷりに落ち着きを払った演奏を極めつけのオーディンス録音にて楽しめましたが、こちらはラジオ収録を意識した「攻め」のリンダが全編で輝きを放っている。それでいてこの時期ならではの色気と愛くるしさを兼ね合わせたルックス。人気が出ないはずがない。ニール・ヤングをして「あのバカでかい声」と言わしめた彼女の歌声ですが、その魅力でもありパンチ力に溢れた歌いっぷりがエンジン全開。なおかつディスク一枚でサクッと聞けてしまう最高のシンガー・ショー。
ここまで何度も触れてきた1976年の横綱オーディエンス「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」と77年の横綱オーディエンス「LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN」という名作の間に割って入ったステレオ・サウンドボード録音のベスト・バージョンが遂にします。過去二タイトルにまったく引けを取らない、これまた最高音質な今回の「LOS ANGELES 1976」。この三つがあればリンダ人気爆発期のライブ音源はOK！
