Among the masterpieces released by the ZION label, Linda Ronstadt’s “LAY DOWN BESIDE ME” is one that has an interesting fate. As you can see from the catalog number “ZION-016”, it is one of the earliest labels released in 2006. Even more remarkable is the incredible sound quality. Far from being an “on sound image”, it is a superb sound source that can be called a sound board completely, yet the freshness of the recording is also an extraordinarily high level. In 2006, it was highly acclaimed in specialized magazines, and above all, it was highly evaluated by Linda enthusiasts. However, it was not a classic rock artist or band’s sound source, so it was a so-called “hidden bestseller” item, no matter how outstanding the sound quality was.
However, the situation for this title changed completely last year. A year ago, “LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN”, which can be said to be a trailer of the excavation rush of Mike Millard sound source that continues to the present, was released. Of course, it is still a bestseller because it is a mirrored recording, but when it was released, when I re-pushed “LAY DOWN BESIDE ME” as “a marvelous audience that exceeds the mirrored sound source”, rumors called for rumors. It is said that the “hidden bestseller” was promoted to the “big bestseller” at once, and eventually it became Sold Out.
Among the items released by the ZION label, more than 10 years have passed since the release, and this is the first item that suddenly sold out with such a pattern. Ironically, the appearance of a “comparison target” with a major taper called a mirrored sound source has re-evaluated the awesomeness of this sound source.

In fact, “LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN” has a wonderful sound quality, but the sound image is even closer than that, and the freshness and clearness that seems to have been recorded today are certainly mirrored. A miracle recording that surpassed the sound source with a margin. In other words, there is no “vintage feeling” that is typical of 70’s sound sources. A perfect balance that perfectly combines the advantages of both the proximity of soundboard recording and the presence of audience recording. I’m really impressed that the ultimate audience recording was left so far in 1976.
In this way, “LAY DOWN BESIDE ME” has exploded in popularity since its release in 2006, but since it suddenly became Sold Out from the previous situation, it is now a very popular item that the voice of recurrence can not stop. It has also become. Of course, with such a prominent recording, it should be a standard item that will always be available after recurrence. Therefore, the popular edition from last year has been re-appeared in response to everyone’s request.

At the time of release in 2006, the sound source was made into a press CD as it was without adding any equalization due to its high sound quality and stability, but nearly 15 years have passed since then and technology Is evolving. For this re-release, we’ve made a few tweaks to this perfect recording. That is to alleviate the sound of the bass drum that was ringing with a hard texture on the stage of the day. Especially in the songs at the beginning of the live, the hard sound was remarkable, so suppressing this made it more comfortable to listen to. It’s noticeable around “That’ll Be The Day” and “Willin'”, and I wonder if you can tell the difference even more by listening with headphones.
Even so, this recording is really amazing. Linda’s singing voice is completely soundboard level, so if it’s a song with a small number of sounds in a band such as the timeless masterpiece “Desperado”, you can even hear her breathing. Even so, the outline of the performance is perfect, and even the scene where Waddy Wachtel’s guitar emits a mistone while admiring the beginning of the live can be heard clearly. In addition, the atmosphere of Boston on the day is vividly transmitted. Isn’t it impossible to reproduce even the official one anymore? The ultimate live record of Linda’s heyday. The long-awaited recurrence of Ultra Recording, which can be confidently recommended as an introduction to audience recording for all music fans as well as enthusiasts!

ZIONレーベルがリリースしてきた名盤の中でも、リンダ・ロンシュタットの「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」は面白い運命を辿った一枚です。「ZION-016」というカタログ・ナンバーからも分かるように、2006年にリリースされた同レーベルの中でも最初期の一つ。それ以上に特筆すべきは、信じられないほどの音の良さ。「オンな音像」どころか、完全にサウンドボードと呼んで差しさわりない極上音源であり、それでいて録音の鮮度も異様なほどハイレベル。2006年当時、専門誌においても絶賛されましたし、何よりリンダのマニアから高い評価を受けたものです。とはいってもクラシックなロックのアーティストやバンドの音源でなかったこともあり、いくら音質が飛び抜けていたとしても、いわゆる「隠れたベストセラー」的なアイテムでありました。
ところが、本タイトルに対する状況が昨年に一変します。今から一年前、現在まで続くマイク・ミラード音源の発掘ラッシュの予告編とも言うべき「LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN」がリリースされました。当然ミラード録音ということで現在に至るまでベストセラーを続行中なのですが、それのリリース時「ミラード音源をも上回る驚異のオーディエンス」として「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」を再プッシュしたところ、噂が噂を呼び「隠れたベストセラー」が一気に「大ベストセラー」へと昇格してしまい、挙句の果てにはSold Outになってしまったという。
ZIONレーベルがリリースしてきたアイテムの中でも、リリースから10年以上が経過し、このようなパターンでいきなり売り切れたアイテムというのは本作が初めて。皮肉なことに、ミラード音源というメジャーテーパーによる「比較対象」が登場したことで、改めて本音源の凄さが再評価されることになったのです。

実際「LOS ANGELES 1977 MIKE MILLARD 1ST GEN」も素晴らしい音質な訳ですが、それよりもさらに近い音像、おまけに今日録音してきたのではないかと思えるほどに透き通った鮮度とクリアネスの高さは確かにミラード音源をも余裕で凌駕してしまった奇跡の録音。言い換えれば70年代の音源にありがちな「ビンテージ感」が皆無ということ。サウンドボード録音の近さとオーディエンス録音の臨場感という両方の長所を見事に兼ね備えた完ぺきなバランス。1976年によくぞここまで究極的なオーディエンス録音が残されていたものだと本当に感心させられます。
こうして2006年のリリース当時よりも人気が爆発してしまった「LAY DOWN BESIDE ME」ですが、先の状況から突然のSold Outとなってしまったことで、今や再発の声が止まない大人気アイテムにもなってしまいました。これほど際立った録音であれば、再発した上で常に入手できるスタンダード・アイテムであるべきなのも当然。そこで昨年からの人気盤が皆様のリクエストにお応えして再登場と相成りました。

2006年のリリース時においては、あまりの高音質ぶりと安定度から一切のイコライズを加えることもなく、音源をそのままプレスCD化していた訳ですが、あれから15年近い歳月が経過してテクノロジーは進化。今回の再リリースに当たっては、この完璧な録音にも少しだけ調整を加えています。それは当日のステージにおいて硬めな質感で鳴っていたバスドラの音を緩和したこと。特にライブ序盤の曲ではその硬質な鳴りが顕著でしたので、これを抑えることで聞き心地の良さが増しました。それは「That’ll Be The Day」や「Willin’」辺りに顕著で、ヘッドフォンで聞くとなおさら違いが分かるかと。
それにしてもこの録音は本当に凄い。リンダの歌声からして完全にサウンドボード・レベルですので、不朽の名作「Desperado」を始めとしたバンドの音数が少ない曲だと彼女の息遣いすら聞こえてしまう。それでいて演奏の輪郭も完ぺきで、ライブ序盤にご愛敬ながらワディ・ワクテルのギターがミストーンを発する場面まで克明に聞こえてしまう。おまけに当日のボストンの空気感まで生々しく伝わってくる。もはやオフィシャルですら再現不可能では？と思えるほど究極的なリンダ絶頂期のライブの記録。マニアはもちろん、すべての音楽ファンのオーディエンス録音の入門としても自信を持って推せるウルトラ・レコーディングが待望の再発！
