Introducing the most natural and excellent “Presence” version of the pitch adjustment board of the sound board sound source of the Southampton performance on January 22, 1973, which appeared in 2007 and attracted the attention of the collector world.

Comparing the sound sources that were distributed around Nishi-Shinjuku at that time, there were a wide variety of versions, from those with a flashy equalization to those recorded with a natural sound that was faithful to the original sound. In the equalized version, by raising the mid-low range and high range from the original sound, you can see that the depth is killed while the finish is flashy at first glance. Furthermore, on the net, there are currently no tweaks from the original sound, probably just fine-tuning “Winston”, “Presence” (which is said to be the best if you want a natural sound), and even 80’s metal-like equalizing. So, there was a version called “dadgad” that had no wide space. However, as with all these versions, the drawback of each disc getting higher and higher in the second half was left untouched. As mentioned at the beginning of this edition, the pitch of the “Presence” sound source, which was recorded with the most natural tone of all the sound sources (probably the master as it is), was adjusted and recorded. Correctly adjust the pitch to increase steadily around the second half for each track (about 1 minute 30 seconds longer overall. Disc 1: 76:53 → 77:53, Disc 2: 75:32 → 76:58). Nine years after its original release, you can relive that amazing Southampton University 1973 with the most natural tones and perfectly corrected pitches.

★ Regarding the sound source of this performance (excerpt from “Live File”)

Southampton on January 22 even reported that there was a multi-channel recorded tape left and Jimmy Page considered recording it when making a live album to be released as “How The West Was Won”. Has been done. Therefore, the sound quality is outstanding, at least among the sound sources that captured this tour, it boasts the sound quality of the best, but for example, in “Rock And Roll”, the part where Robert Plant’s vocal first enters is not well heard. It’s clear that the mixdown wasn’t done with the official release in mind, and it’s likely that the “RAW” state was leaked. There was a fade-out in the middle of the guitar solo of “I Can’t Quit You Baby”, and only the part where the following blues song is connected by the fade-in is missing, but the other recording contents are perfect. “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp” doesn’t seem to be played, but instead the encore is more than enough to make up for it. Following “Heartbreaker”, it is valuable to hear “Thank You” using the mellotron, which is a feature of this period, with such a wonderful sound board sound source, but after all, the highlight of this performance is “How Many More Times” It will be after. Jimmy Page didn’t show off his bow in this “How Many More Times”, and the composition is bold. First of all, when the theme was over, the ad-live that was clear for Robert Plant at this time was developed, and then it moved to “The Hunter” easily, but this time with the instrumental part in between, it was a wasteful form again. “The Hunter” is being played. And instead of returning to “How Many More Times”, “Th Hunter” is followed by “Communication Breakdown”. “How Many More Times” itself is a very unusual development, but I was surprised at the extremely unusual flow of “How Many More Times”, “The Hunter”, and “Communication Breakdown” for the first time in a while. It’s a must-listen to play with attention to Jimmy Page’s details as a whole, but it’s a reminder of how John Paul Jones’ bass added depth to the band.

2007年に登場し、コレクター界の話題をさらった1973年1月22日サウスハンプトン公演のサウンドボード音源の最もナチュラルで優秀とされる「Presence」ヴァージョンのピッチ調整盤が登場です。

当時、西新宿を中心に出回った音源を比較しますと、派手なイコライズを施したものから、原音に忠実なナチュラルなサウンドで収録されたものまで、実に様々なヴァージョンが存在していました。イコライズされたヴァージョンでは、原音から中低音と高音を上げる事により、一聴すると派手な仕上がりながら奥行きが殺されいることが判ります。更にネット上では、現在、原音から全くいじってない、おそらく微調整のみの「Winston」、「Presence」（自然なサウンドを求めるならこれがベストと言われている）、更には80年代メタルのようなイコライジングで、ワイド間が無くなっている「dadgad」というヴァージョンが存在していました。ただし、これら全てのヴァージョンの言えることですが、各ディスクごとに後半を中心にどんどんピッチが高くなっていくという欠点はそのままにされていました。本盤は、冒頭にある通り、全ての音源の中で、最もナチュラルな音色で収録されていた（おそらくマスターそのまま）「Presence」音源のピッチを調整し収録したものです。後半を中心にどんどんピッチが高くなっていくのを各トラックごとに正しく調整（全体で約1分30秒長くなっています。Disc 1: 76:53→77:53、Disc 2: 75:32→76:58）。オリジナル・リリースから9年目、最もナチュラルな音色と完璧に補正された正確なピッチで、あの素晴らしい「Southampton University 1973」を再び楽しむことができます。

★本公演音源に関して（「Live File」より抜粋）

1月22日のサウザンプトンはマルチ・チャンネルで録音されたテープが残されていて、「How The West Was Won」としてリリースされるライヴ・アルバム制作の際、ジミー・ペイジが収録を検討したとさえ伝えられている。従って、音質は抜群に優れており、少なくともこのツアーを捕えた音源の中ではダントツの音質を誇るものだが、例えば「Rock And Roll」でロバート・プラントのヴォーカルが最初に入る部分が良く聴こえないので、オフィシャル・リリースを念頭にミックスダウンを施したものではないのは明白であり、おそらく”RAW”な状態のものが流出したものと思われる。「I Can’t Quit You Baby」のギターソロの途中でフェイドアウトが入り、続くブルース曲がフェイドインで繋がっている箇所だけ欠落しているが、他の収録内容は申し分のないものだ。「Bron-Y-Aur Stomp」は演奏されていない模様だが、その代わりにアンコールはそれを補って余りある素晴らしい内容となっている。「Heartbreaker」に続き、この時期の特徴であるメロトロンを使用した「Thank You」がこのような素晴らしいサウンドボード音源で聴けることは貴重だが、何と言ってもこの公演のハイライトは「How Many More Times」以降だろう。この「How Many More Times」でジミー・ペイジは弓弾きを披露しておらず、その分だけ構成に大胆さが味わえる。まずテーマが終わると、この時期のロバート・プラントにしては冴え渡ったアドリヴが展開されていて、その後、あっさりと「The Hunter」に移るが、インスト・パートを挟んで今度は勿体ぶった形で再び「The Hunter」が演奏されているのだ。そして「How Many More Times」へは戻らず、「Th Hunter」に続いて「Communication Breakdown」が演奏されているのである。「How Many More Times」自体が非常に変わった展開だが、「How Many More Times」、「The Hunter」、「Communication Breakdown」と言う、極めて珍しい流れには久しぶりに驚いてしまった。全体的にジミー・ペイジの細部にまで気を使ったプレイも必聴だが、ジョン・ポール・ジョーンズのベースが如何にこのバンドへ音の厚みをもたらしていたのかを再認識できるものである。
