Among the ZEP live sound sources that Millard left behind as much as “Eddie”, the outstanding quality of the ZEP live sound source, even if it was not a mania level, I got into it and got hooked on collecting ZEP live sound sources There are a lot of people who have gone wrong. In any case, no one would argue that this is the best live sound source of the 1975 ZEP captured by Millard.
In the 21st century, EMPRESS VALLEY’s “LONG BEACH CALIFORNICATION” is unearthing sound board recordings for such a super famous live performance. Does this mean that the world’s mirrored sound source is also useless? However, his popularity never deteriorated. Certainly, the sound board reveals the details of the performance with intense clearness, but the fate of the sound source recorded from the PA out, or the realism unique to live is poor. Furthermore, the feeling that the momentum of the performance is spoiled is undeniable. On that point, the mirrored recording was breathed in on the air of Long Beach Arena on March 11, 1975, and the sound image that was incredibly on and the clear freshness were overwhelming. As a result, the value of this recording was never lost.

How could you achieve such high quality recording so far? That’s what the JEMS team clarified when we released this master tape. It was said in 1975 that Millard first introduced the combination of the Nakamichi 550 cassette deck to the AKG 451E microphone that realized the high sound quality. He first tested this equipment at a concert at the LA Forum in Phases in early March. That was the recording heard on their “L.A. FORUM 1975 MIKE MILLARD 1st GEN” CD, which was also in preparation for the upcoming ZEP west coast attack. It was said that the concert that I participated in while also checking the equipment was Phases.
But that’s not all. Millard came up with the legendary “wheelchair training” and put it into practice on the first day of Long Beach. Regarding this matter, at the time of this release, the testimony of a person named Jim R who raised a wheelchair and headed to Millard and Arena was included, and he said that it was “the beginning of the wheelchair era” in Millard’s recording career. Is. It was a reason why I was able to achieve a sound image that was extremely stable and yet amazing. In addition, Johnsie’s bass line is also captured with an amazing clearness. Perhaps because it was a monumental recording for Millard as well, this time, JEMS is an irregular sound source that is released from the first remastered version of the master.
After that, I uploaded the master tape as it was, a version of “Flat Transfer”. Regarding this sound source, we released “LONG BEACH ARENA 1975: Mike Millard Unmarked 1st Gen Cassettes Transfer” released by JEMS a few years ago, and there is a track record of being sold out, but the difference in sound quality between this version and this version Is obvious. Our staff were overwhelmed by whether the difference in sound quality was created so much between the so-called low-generation type “Unmarked 1st Gen” and the master tape. Even with “Unmarked 1st Gen,” which sounds so natural and natural, it sounds like a muffled sound in front of this version.
Among them, the “flat transfer” is especially noteworthy. The texture and listening comfort that you want to call the delicate and natural extremity of the cassette audience are truly wonderful. Mirrored is originally a taper that focuses on wide area expansion by strengthening hiss noise by selectively using Dolby on and off. Finally, I was able to enjoy what it was like.
On the other hand, the remastered version that first appeared, but the finish here is also wonderful. Although there are some unnaturalness due to the suppression of hiss noise such as the sound of Bonzo’s drum and the edge of MC generated by the plant between songs, I think that this is more enjoyable for beginners. It is clear that JEMS especially wanted to push the sound of Paige’s guitar to the front by this equalization.

And the performance is also wonderful. From the next day to the second day of Seattle among enthusiasts, the peak of the 1975 U.S. tour is likely to be the peak, but the day before that, ZEP’s light footwork ready to run out is the light performance of this day. Isn’t it a big attraction? In particular, the flexible performance of the rhythm team is different from the runaway performance of the next day, and the first performance is “In My Time Of Dying”. It was clear that the original approach was different from the heavy-duty reproduction of the studio version when the keys were lowered for live performances, but the rhythm team’s light and supple performance and the front. マニアにとって毎週のお楽しみであるマイク・ミラードのオーディエンス録音マスターの公開、今回は遂にレッド・ツェッペリンの音源が登場です。その第一弾が1975年のロングビーチ初日というのも実に相応しいではありませんか。ZEPロングビーチ初日といえば、そのあまりの高音質ぶりから数え切れないほどのアイテムを生み出してきた極上オーディエンス。あの「エディ」と双璧をなすほどミラードが遺したZEPライブ音源の中でも際立ったクオリティの高さには、マニア・レベルでなくとも手を出してしまい、それをきっかけとしてZEPライブ音源収集にハマってしまったという方も少なくないのでは。いずれにせよミラードが捉えた75年ZEPのライブ音源はこれがベストであることに異論を唱える人はいないでしょう。
そんな超有名ライブも21世紀を迎えるとEMPRESS VALLEYの「LONG BEACH CALIFORNICATION」によってサウンドボード録音が発掘されています。これで天下のミラード音源もお役目御免となってしまうのか…。ところがどっこい、それでも彼の音源の人気が落ちることはありませんでした。確かにサウンドボードは強烈なクリアネスで演奏のディテールを解き明かしてくれるのですが、PAアウトから収録された音源の宿命か、ライブならではの臨場感が乏しい。さらには演奏の勢いもスポイルされてしまう感が否めない。その点ミラード録音の方は1975年3月11日、ロングビーチ・アリーナの空気をたっぷりと吸い込んだ上で信じがたいほどにオンな音像と澄み切った鮮度が圧巻。結果としてこの録音の価値が失われることはありませんでした。

どうしてここまで卓越したハイクオリティ録音が実現できたのか？ということを今回のマスターテープ公開に際してJEMSチームが解明してくれました。そもそもミラードがその高音質ぶりを実現させたAKG 451Eマイクにナカミチ550カセット・デッキというコンビネーションを導入したのが1975年だったという。彼はまず3月頭にフェイセズのLAフォーラムでのコンサートにてこの機材を試験投入。それが彼らの「L.A. FORUM 1975 MIKE MILLARD 1st GEN」CDで聞かれる録音だったのですが、それもこれも来るべきZEPの西海岸襲来へ備えてのことだったのです。機材のチェックを兼ねて参戦したコンサートがフェイセズだったとは。
しかしそれだけに収まりません。ミラードは伝説の「車椅子仕込み」を思いつき、それを実行に移したのが何とロングビーチ初日だったのです。この件に関しては今回の公開に際して車椅子を調達してミラードとアリーナに向かったJim Rという人物の証言が盛り込まれており、ミラードの録音キャリアにおいて彼言うところの「車椅子時代の始まり」であったというのです。どうりで安定感抜群でなおかつ驚異的な音像が実現できた訳だ。おまけにジョンジーのベースラインも驚異的な粒立ちのクリアネスで捉えられている。このようにミラードにとっても記念碑的な録音であったからか、今回JEMSは最初にマスターをリマスターしたバージョンから公開するという、変則的な音源の登場となっています。
その後で改めてマスターテープそのままの状態、いわば「フラット・トランスファー」のバージョンをアップロードさせました。この音源に関しては数年前にこれまたJEMSが公開した「LONG BEACH ARENA 1975: Mike Millard Unmarked 1st Gen Cassettes Transfer」をリリースし、なおかつ売り切れてしまった実績がありますが、それと今回のバージョンの音質の差は歴然。いわゆるロージェネレーションの類である「Unmarked 1st Gen」とマスターテープでもこれほどまでに音質の差が生まれていたのか…と当店スタッフは圧倒されました。あれほど高音質でナチュラルに感じられた「Unmarked 1st Gen」ですら、今回のバージョンを前にするとモコモコとしてこもり気味の音質に聞こえてしまう。
中でも特筆すべきは「フラット・トランスファー」。繊細でナチュラルというカセット・オーディエンスの極みとでも呼びたくなる質感や聞き心地は本当に素晴らしい。ミラードは元々ドルビーのオンオフを使い分けてヒスノイズを強めてまで広域の伸びにこだわったテーパーです。そのありのままの状態が遂に楽しめるようになったのです。
一方、最初に登場したリマスター版ですが、こちらの仕上がりも見事。ボンゾのドラムの音や曲間でプラントが発したMCのエッジなど、ヒスノイズまで抑えたが故の不自然さが少し見受けられるものの、むしろ初心者はこちらの方が楽しめると思います。特にJEMSがこのイコライズによってペイジのギターの音を前面に押し出したかったのは明らか。

そして演奏がまた素晴らしい。マニアの間では翌日からシアトル二日目までが75年アメリカ・ツアーのピークとされがちですが、その前日であるこの日、ZEPが暴走し出す準備の整ったフットワークの軽い演奏こそ、この日の大きな魅力ではないか。特にリズム隊の足腰しなやかな演奏ぶりは翌日以降の暴走ぶりとはまた違った魅力があり、その最初の名演が「In My Time Of Dying」。元々ライブ演奏用にキーを下げた段階でスタジオ・バージョンにあった重厚な雰囲気の再現とは違ったアプローチを図っていたことは明白ですが、リズム隊二人の軽やかでしなやかな演奏ぶりとフロント二人のはっちゃけぶりがうまく溶け合っている。
確かに翌日からシアトルまでの演奏はボルテージ高めなのですが、それがクドめに映ってしまうのも確か。実際に「Dazed And Confused」は翌日以降エスカレートの一途を辿る訳ですが、むしろ75年アメリカの定型パターンで収まっているこちらの演奏の方が聞き疲れしない魅力があり、それが今回のマスター音質によってさらに際立っている。また「Stairway To Heaven」になると今度はペイジが軽やかにフレーズを弾きまくっており、これもまた翌日以降とは違った魅力にあふれている。
つまり75年アメリカ・ツアーの完成形がロングビーチ初日に出来上がり、それが翌日以降のエスカレートしたプレイにつながったのだといえるのでは。これまでにリリースされてきたロングビーチ初日アイテムを聞き倒してきたマニアにとっても、今回のマスターテープならではのアッパー感によって、その演奏の魅力に改めて気付かされるのではないでしょうか。そしてリマスターとフラット・トランスファーそれぞれのバージョンに魅力がある。ここから始まった伝説の車椅子録音を心ゆくまでお楽しみください。

For the first day of the long beach in 1975, JEMS published the long-awaited mirrored cassette master version on the net, but the same JEMS 1ST in 2015 was the 34th minute of the second half of the show on the second day. Since releasing the GEN sound source, the upper version has not appeared yet.

As for the ZEP performance itself, March 12th, when the extremely rough performance was shown against the first day, was evaluated by enthusiasts, but unfortunately Millard was in a traffic jam on this day. I was caught up, and when I finally arrived at the venue, the live was at the end. Still, when I listen to the recorded fragments, this is the outstanding sound quality again. If the second day of Long Beach, which is one of the famous performances, is listened to with this sound quality… I can’t help holding my dream. In addition, although it is the second day of 1ST GEN with sufficiently high sound quality, although it is a short recording, you can enjoy the performance and sound quality of the masterpiece, so here is the second day master sound source released to JEMS. Where you want it.

The recording on the first day was the best, but the sound recording on the second day was quite amazing even though it was a fragment recording. From the TCOLZ label at the beginning of the 2010s, on this day, “DEDICATED TO WHO GOT DIVORCED TODAY” covers all the sound sources including this recording, but even if you compare it to the version recorded there, the upper feeling this time is It is considerable. After all, the sound quality with luster and waist is a wonderful recording. If you want to listen to the whole live with this release, I highly recommend “DEDICATED TO~”. The sound quality is inferior to that of the mirrored sound source, but among maniacs, it will be overwhelmed by such a masterpiece that it can be said that “From this day to Seattle is the peak”.
That said, it’s different if the first day is a mediocre live. On the first day of Long Beach, the tour was rehabilitated from the condition of a cold plant and Page injured finger in a frigid Chicago to recover the condition and prepare for a perfect condition. Let’s The voice of the plant is particularly wonderful, and the powerful song shines throughout the story.
It is also known that “The Crunge” was performed almost full with plant vocals in both of these two days. Fortunately, I’m really happy that this precious take was recorded on the second day. Mirrored’s recording shows the stunning funky groove unique to 1975. On the first day’s live performance, the roundness of Johnsy’s bass line and the paige that allows him to quickly return and hear a stable phrase, even if it gets disturbed, are reflected in the performance on the first day. On Eddie’s Day, please enjoy the two days of Long Beach that Millard left behind with ultra-comparable ultra quality with this set.

75年ロング・ビーチ初日関しては、待望のミラード・カセット・マスター・ヴァージョンをJEMSがネット上に公開してくれましたが、2日目のショウ後半の34分は2015年に同じJEMSが1ST GEN音源を公開してくれて以来、アッパー版は未だ出現していません。

ZEPの演奏自体は、初日に対して極度に荒々しい演奏が披露された3月12日の方が、マニアの間で評価されていますが、残念なことにミラードはこの日、交通渋滞に巻き込まれてしまい、ようやく会場に着いた時にはライブが終盤を迎えるという状況でした。それでも録音された断片を聴くと、これがまた抜群の音質。名演の一つに数えられるロングビーチ二日目が全編この音質で聴かれたならば…叶わぬ夢を抱かずにはいられません。また、十分に高音質な1ST GENのこの2日目ですが、幾ら短い録音とは言え、圧巻の演奏・音質が楽しめますので、ここはJEMSに、この2日目マスター音源も是非、公開して欲しいところ。

初日の録音は最高ですが、この2日目も断片録音とは言え、相当凄い音質。2010年代初頭にTCOLZレーベルからこの日は「DEDICATED TO WHO GOT DIVORCED TODAY」にて、今回の録音を含むすべての音源を網羅していますが、そこに収録したバージョンと比べても今回のアッパー感は相当なものです。やはり艶や腰のある音質が見事な録音となっています。もし今回のリリースでライブ全体を聴いてみたくなられたとしたら、是非「DEDICATED TO～」をおすすめいたします。音質はミラード音源と比べて見劣りしますが、マニアの間では「この日からシアトルまでがピーク」と言わしめるほどの名演に圧倒されることでしょう。
かといって初日が平凡なライブかといえば、それは違います。むしろ極寒のシカゴで風邪をひいてしまったプラントと指を怪我したペイジ、という手負いの状態から敢行されたツアーが調子を取り戻し、万全な状態へと息を整えられた名演がロングビーチの初日でしょう。特にプラントの声の状態は素晴らしいものがあり、全編において力強い歌が輝きを放ちます。
これら二日間ではどちらでも「The Crunge」がプラントのボーカル入りでほぼフルに演奏されたことでも知られています。幸いにもこの貴重なテイクが2日目にも録音されてるのは本当に嬉しい。それを75年ならではの腰が据わったファンキー・グルーブを見事な状態で捉えてみせたのがミラードの録音。丸みを帯びたジョンジーのベースライン、時折乱れても、すぐに戻って安定したフレーズを聴かせるペイジなど、いい意味での堅実さが演奏に反映されているのが初日のライブであり、あの「エディの日も」顔負けなウルトラ・クオリティでミラードが遺してくれたロングビーチ二日間を本セットにてどうぞ味わって下さい。
