1975年アメリカ・ツアーの千秋楽を飾ったLAフォーラム3ナイツ。中でも最終日たる3月27日は当店からも二回ほどリリースされてきました。最初はこの日存在する二つのオーディエンス録音を一切の加工なしにカップリングしてみせたTCOLZブランドの「WE’RE PLAYING OUR BALLS OUT」。特にミラード・ソースこと「recorder 1」に関しては海外のマニア間で「もっともナチュラル」だと評価を受けています。ところが日本のマニアからすれば「何もしなさすぎる」あるいは「ヒスノイズの量からすると本当にマスターからなのか」という意見も聞かれたのは事実。
二回目のリリースは赤いジャケで75年LAの三部作の一つだった「LA FORUM 1975 3RD NIGHT」。こちらはJEMSによるファースト・ジェネレーション・カセットを元にしており、「WE’RE PLAYING～」ほどヒスノイズが強くないことからか日本のマニアの間ではこちらの方が好まれたように思われます。いずれにせよ、当店から過去にリリースされてきたアイテムはそれぞれのソースを素直に収録したものであり、当日のライブの完全収録を目指したものではありません。内容ではなく、むしろ音源アーカイブとしてのリリースが過去の二タイトルだったのです。

元々がツアー最終日ならではのマラソン・ショーですので、今回は当店から初の1975年3月25日のコンプリート・バージョンが限定のプレスCDにて登場します。そのリリースに際して元にしたのはネット上で2010年にLiriodendronを名乗る人物がアップしたバージョン。そもそもこの日のコンプリート・バージョンと言えば、リリースが今から十年以上前になる「DEEP THROAT III」しか存在せず、トータルでよりイコライズ感が低い状態での新たなコンプリート版の登場が待ち望まれていた日でもありました。
実を言いますと、今回のリリースに対して当初はおなじみWinston Remasterバージョンの使用を検討していたのですが、彼のアイテムとしては初期のものだからでしょうか、コンプリートながらも「recorder 1」パートの仕上がりが今の「Winston Remaster」からは想像もつかないような硬い質感のイコライズが施されてしまっていたのです。
そこで「recorder 1」パートに関して新たなる白羽の矢が立てられたのが今回のLiriodendron。彼は「LA FORUM 1975 3RD NIGHT」と同じくJEMSバージョンの音源をリマスターしているのですが、その仕上がりがいい感じ。同じミラードの録音でも1977年と違って75年LAは高音の抜けがそれほどでもなく、むしろビンテージなアナログ・テイストを感じさせる音質です。そこに下手なイコライズを加えると不自然極まりない（Winston Remasterはそこで失敗していたのです）。その点Liriodendronはヒスを適度に抑えた仕上がりが見事であり、今回のリリースにおけるメインパートへの採用となりました。
そして補填要員として「recorder 2」パートにWinston Remasterを採用しています。こちらのパートのイコライズは問題なかったものの、やはり初期のWinston作品ですので、今にもましてピッチの狂いががおざなり。そこで補填として使う前にこの問題をしっかりとアジャストした上で補填しているのです。中でも「recorder 1」パートにおいてもっとも深刻な欠損の起きた「The Rain Song」と「No Quarter」もなめらかにコンプリート編集。

演奏内容に関しては「LA FORUM 1975～」リリース時にも申しましたように、75年アメリカ・ツアーの中ではロングビーチ二日目からシアトル二日目までの名演量産期間からすれば、ややとっ散らかった印象を受ける日。それでもマイク・ミラードによって信じられないほどオンな音像で捉えられたツアー最終日のショーをコンプリートで聴き通せるというのは格別というもの。
この日のステージでプレイにもっともムラが現われているのがペイジ。色々と最終日ならではのスペシャルを盛り込もうとするのですが、その場の思い付きとツアーの披露が重なったからでしょうか、今一つフレーズに結びつきません。それが上手くいった例は引き伸ばされた「Over The Hills And Far Away」のエンディングでしょう。ところが次の「In My Time Of Dying」ではペイジと他の三人が上手くかみ合っていない場面があり、こういったところがとっ散らかった印象につながるのです。
何とも解りやすい話ですが、その点「The Song Remains The Same」のように遊びが入らない、あるいは遊びを盛り込む余地のないやり慣れた曲になるとバンドが一致団結した素晴らしい演奏が聞かれるのだから面白いもの。LAでの「The Song～」と言えば1977年「エディ」の日の印象が強烈ですが、実は75年3月27日の演奏はその時と違った名演となっています。もっともキレたプレイを聞かせるボンゾですら77年よりはフットワークが軽く、このツアーのZEPにはまだある種の「若さ」が宿っていたことを再認識させてくれる名演と呼べるでしょう。
非常に長い演奏となった「Dazed And Confused」にしても、前半はただ各パートを引き伸ばしているだけにしか映りません。しかし弓弾きパート以降になるとペイジが持ち直し、75年ならではなヘビィネスが冴えるボンゾとの駆け引きが非常にスリリング。そしてアンコールの「Black Dog」ではペイジが文字通り最後の力を振り絞るかのようなフレーズを弾きまくってマラソン・ショーを終えています。そんな1975年ZEPライブならではの「ムラ」を楽しむべきなのがアメリカ・ツアーのラスト・ナイト。久々の完全収録な編集盤かつ新たなる決定版にてじっくりとお楽しみください！
