For Zeppelin fans the year of 1971 is memorized as a very fruitful one. Particularly for Japanese fans, this is also the year when the first Japan tour was held, in addition to the opening beginning with the medley of “Immigration Song” and “Heart Breaker”, 4th album songs were added to the set list, It is this time that came out. 【1971 North American Tour】
In 1971, Zeppelin tours Europe in May and June, followed by North America in the following August and September. In the summer North American tour, putting in the Montreux 2 show of the warmup gig, we perform all 26 performances. It is the first time that almost 1 year interval has passed since the last tour and I have not been living for such a long time. Meanwhile, the situation surrounding rock in the United States, other bands such as Grand Funk has come on, and Zeppelin had to appeal again to the American market and fans. Although it is a somewhat echoed sound, it is recorded with uniform sound quality throughout the entire story. Most of the ones on the pre-laid-on board feel sound processing somewhat excessive. The somewhat muffled sound image does not know the feeling of wanting to raise the treble part, but due to the nature of this sound source, the sound processing is not effective and it is forced to make the original sound distorted. In this work, emphasis on naturalness is suppressed to the minimum level of processing to slightly reduce His. The content attention is “Comminication Breakdown” played by encore. It is a version in which “Gallows Pole” lyrics are inserted in the middle.

【Second Season of Berkeley Performance September 14, 1971】
William Stout will be a famous illustrator who has worked on numerous masterpiece jackets among the Zeppelin collectors. Analog boot ‘GO TO TO CALIFORNIA’ recorded September 14, 1971 Berkeley performance. It is just before the legendary first Japan tour. In tracing an analog sound source, the turntable’s motor sound and needle sound are inevitably a structural problem. Of course, it can be processed mechanically when digitizing, but if it is applied too much, the original sound itself will also be affected, so we must carefully modify it. This work is not an exception, although it is processing to make the needle sound inconspicuous, it has not yet been completely erased. This is due to the fact that it is the processing on the barely available line so that the original sound is not affected. Of course, the big needle sound is removed by pinpoint, but on the assumption that the sound of the original material is respected, please think that the needle sound elimination processing is done in the range without influence.

In addition, in the middle of “Stairway to heaven”, the plant can listen to a very unusual moment, singing the lyrics “Unnamed:” You are the house of the children of the sun ~ ♪ “. 【GOING TO CALIFORNIA TWO SHOWS】

ツェッペリン・ファンにとって1971年という年は非常に実り多きものとして記憶される。特に日本のファンにとっては初来日公演が行なわれた年でもあり、「移民の歌」と「ハートブレーカー」のメドレーから始まるオープニングに加え、4thアルバムの曲がセットリストに加わり、ステージ構成に厚みが出てきたのもこの時期である。この頃には既にツェッペリンは巨大な存在となっており、かつてのような小さな会場では収容できないくらいの動員数を誇るようになっていた。そのような状況を鑑みて、1971年初頭にBACK TO THE CLUBS TOURという、あえて小さな会場を巡るツアーを行ない、4thアルバムの曲の初演を行なっている。後世の視点からはツェッペリン・クラシクスとも言うべき「Rock And Roll」や「天国への階段」「Black Dog」などが加わることにより、よりショウ全体がドラマチックになったと言える。特に「天国への階段」は後半のギターソロが、スタジオ・バージョンに比べ毎晩長く時間が費やされており、ステージのハイライトともなっている。

【1971年北米ツアー】
1971年、ツェッペリンは、5月と6月に欧州を、続く8月と9月に北米をツアーでまわっている。夏の北米ツアーは、ウォームアップギグのモントルー2公演を入れると、全26公演行なっている。前回のツアーからほぼ1年の間隔が空いており、これほどまでに長い間ライヴをしなかったのは初めての事である。その間、アメリカのロックを巡る状況は、グランドファンクなど他のバンドが台頭してきており、ツェッペリンは再びアメリカの市場とファンへ向けてアピールする必要があった。プラントはキレイに前年までの髭を剃り、再びツェッペリンがアメリカのファンの眼前に立ったのである。

北米ツアーは、ホームグラウンドであるLAフォーラム、そしてバカンスを兼ねたハワイ公演など、いずれも温暖な空気を感じさせる、のびのびとした熱演が連夜行なわれた。そのいずれも名演と呼ぶに相応しく、またこのツアーからは、サウンドボード収録のオーランドや、「急がば回れ」のロサンゼルスなど、名音源が数多く輩出されている。そして本作カリフォルニアはバークレー公演も、その名音源のひとつに挙げられるべきものであろう。長いツアーの中で、ホノルルがバカンスを兼ねた追加公演とするならば、フルコンサーとで実質的に最終地となったのが、このバークレー連続公演である。LAとツェッペリンの関係は今さら語るまでもないだろうが、このツアーにおいても、LAフォーラムとバークレーだけが、連続で2公演行なわれていることからも、いかにツェッペリン側がLAのファンを重視していたかが伺える。

【1971年9月13日バークレー公演初日】
高音質で数多くのタイトルが古くから存在する二日目に比して、この初日はタイトル数が少なく、また音源も一種のみしか確認されていない。しかし二日目ほどではないにせよ、充分な高音質で収録されているし、何よりコンサート完全収録である。 1971年のコンサートがフルで収録されている、これだけで価値があるというものだ。音源的には超大物コレクター提供の2nd Generationテープとして伝わっているソースを使用。いくぶんエコーがかった音ではあるものの、全編通して均一の音質で収録されている。既発盤では音処理がいくぶん過剰にも感じられるものがほとんどであった。幾分くぐもった音像は高音部分を上げたくなる気持ちもわからないでもないのだが、この音源の性質上、音処理が効果的とは言えず、本来の音が歪にならざるをえない。本作ではナチュラルさを重視し、わずかにヒスを軽減させる程度の最低限の処理に抑えられている。内容的な注目はアンコールで演奏される「Comminication Breakdown」である。途中で「Gallows Pole」の歌詞が挿入されるバージョンとなっている。

【1971年9月14日バークレー公演二日目】
ウイリアム・スタウトは、ツェッペリン・コレクターの間では数々の名盤のジャケットを手掛けた有名なイラストレーターであろう。スタウトはツェッペリンのみならず、ビートルズ、THE WHO、ストーンズ、クラプトンなど、当時の多くのジャケットのデザインを手掛けている。彼の代表作といえば、ツェッペリンなら『BONZO’S BIRTHDAY PARTY』『BURN LIKE A CANDLE』など、ストーンズなら『WELCOME TO NEW YORK』、クラプトンなら『STORMY MONDAY』と言ったところだろうか。おそらくスタウトは、江戸時代の浮世絵師が、生活費のために春画を請け負っていたような感覚でジャケットを描いていたのだろう。そして、そのスタウトのジャケットが内容とタイトルを含め合致する名盤のひとつが、本作『GOING TO CALIFORNIA』である。

アナログ・ブートの『GOING TO CALIFORNIA』は1971年9月14日バークレー公演を収録している。伝説的な初来日公演のまさに直前である。アナログ時代も黎明期にリリースされたコレクターズ・アイテムとして、TMOQレーベルがリリースした『GOING TO CALIFORNIA』は、その音質の良さから非常に人気のある公演であった。むしろアナログ盤が、この公演を有名にしたと言ってもいい。そして、これだけ発掘が進んだ近年において、いまだその元となったテープ・ソースが見当たらないという事でも有名である。つまり、CD時代すら終えようというこの時代にあって、いまだ当時のアナログ盤が最も音質が良いということになる。そして本作も数多ある既発盤と同様、アナログ盤から起こした音源をCD化している。

アナログ音源をトレースするに当たって、ターンテーブルのモーター音と針音は構造上不可避な問題である。もちろんデジタル化に際し機械的に処理することは出来るのだが、過度に施すと原音そのものにも影響が出てしまうため、その加減を慎重にせねばならない。本作もそれは例外ではなく、針音を目立たなくする処理はしてあるものの、完全消去には至っていない。これは原音に影響が出ぬようギリギリのラインでの処理であることに起因する。もちろん大きな針音はピンポイントで除去してあるが、元素材の音を尊重するという前提の上で、影響のない範囲で針音除去処理がしてあると考えていただきたい。

なお、「天国への階段」の途中において、プラントは通常とは異なり「君は太陽の子供たちの家～♪」という歌詞を歌うという、非常に珍しい瞬間を聴くことが出来る。意味は難解だが、どことなく曲の雰囲気、世界観に合ったものといえるだろう。

【GOING TO CALIFORNIA TWO SHOWS】
1971年9月13日と14日の二日間連続で行なわれたカリフォルニアはバークレー公演を、4枚組にて収録。初日は2nd Generationと言われているテープから起こしたもの。そして二日目はアナログ音源をデジタル化したものが、それぞれソースとなっている。 機械的なイコライジングで「ある特定の音」を強調するのではなく、あくまでナチュラルな素材のままの音を尊重し、両日とも聴きやすさを優先して制作されている。おそらくこの2公演に関しては、本作が現在考え得る最高のものであろう。あの神々しい光を放っている初来日公演、その直前のツェッペリンを大いなる感慨を持って聴いてみて欲しい。ちなみに帯の上部のカラー写真は1971年9月14日の写真と言われているものである。 ジャケは外面コーティングジャケ仕様、CDラベルはピクチャーディスクの永久仕様の愛蔵盤で登場！大大大大スイセン盤！Truly Amazing SoundでPlay It Loud！日本語帯付。
