当店がリリースしてきたZEP歴代のLA公演ですが、皆さんもご存知のようにマイク・ミラードによる超絶オーディエンス録音は前回の1975年にて終了となりました。よって今回リリースされるのは彼の音源とは無関係なオーディエンス録音ではありますが、それでもZEPのライブ史において欠かす事が出来ない名音源だから絶対に見逃せません。「Burn Like a Candle」、そうです！1972年6月25日のLAフォーラムでのライブを収録した名音源が今回の限定プレスCDリリースに選ばれました。

この日は今から十年以上前にライブアルバム「How the West Was Won」のメイン・フィーチャーとなり、それまでリリースされて来たオーディエンス録音も役割を終えてしまうかに思えたものです。この日のライブが完璧なクオリティのステレオ・サウンドボードでZEP側からリリースされたとなっては、それまで72年アメリカ・ツアーの定番として親しまれてきたオーディエンス録音がもはや形無しか…そう思われました。
ところがどうでしょう、先のアルバムは次の公演であったロングビーチと組み合わせた編集ライブ盤であり、曲間におけるMCはことごとくカット。さらに「Whole Lotta Love」メドレーは著作権使用料が発生することもあって短縮。そして21世紀初頭ならではのエフェクティブが目立つ仕上がりが気になる音処理など、リリースから時間が経過するにしたがって、マニアの間では評価が分かれるアルバムとなってしまいました。そんな状況を突いて作られたのが当店リリース「How the West Was Redone」だったのです。

こうした状況は先のアルバムに対する違和感だけでなく、それまで長年に渡ってマニアに愛されてきた72年6月25日のオーディエンス録音を再浮上させるきっかけとなりました。確かにこの日の音源はミラード録音のような無敵のクリアネスには及ばないかも知れませんが、それでも驚く程にオンな音像は1972年のオーディエンス録音としては別格のクオリティ。何よりも相思相愛なZEPとLAのオーディエンスによる相互作用が産み出したマジカルな一夜の臨場感を克明に捉えてみせた点はライブ・アルバムからことごとく切り落とされていた部分を蘇らせてくれたと言っても過言ではないのです。
そこで、ここ十年の間に再び72年LAフォーラム公演のオーディエンス録音を収録したアイテムが登場するようになりました。ところが残念なことに、その大半が元の音源にイコライズを加えてしまった形だったのです。元が非常にアナログチックな味わいを持った音源ですので、イコライズ感がどうにも否めません。この音源の持つ豊かな臨場感やオンな音像を際立たせようとしての処理だったのでしょうが、結局はイコライズの弊害もまた目立つ結局となってしまいました。

そこで今回はLAフォーラム72年公演オーディエンス録音のファースト・ジェネレーション・コピーを元に、一切のイコライズを加えずピッチ補正といった微調整のみで忠実にCD化。90年代に出されていたアイテムなども素直な音質ながら、ピッチの狂いといった問題を抱えたままだったのです。何よりもイコライズ感の無い状態でも非常に素早いオーディエンス録音であることを再認識させられるはず。
今回のオーディエンス録音は音質の素晴らしさはもちろんのこと、何よりも演奏とライブ全体が筆舌に尽くしがたいほどな内容であることを再認識してもらえることが大きな魅力でもあります。やはりまだ声が若くて刺すようなスクリーミング・ボイスが冴え渡るプラントはとにかく素晴らしい！結果として完成前の「Houses of the Holy」収録曲が同様な状態でも歌い上げられた貴重なライブ音源としても評価の高い音源な訳ですが、しかも「The Ocean」後半部などはリマスター盤コンパニオン・ディスクのアレンジでプラントが歌っていることが解るのも現在ならではの発見と言えるでしょう。

そしてZEPのグループ全体を通しても足腰しなやかな演奏がまた新鮮。長い「Dazed and Confused」でも「Walter’s Walk」パターンから「The Crunge」への移り変わりも鮮やか。これが1年後にはベビーなグルーブへと豹変するのだから、なおさら面白いものです。終盤「Whole Lotta Love」の名曲連発なメドレー選曲もこれこそが真の状態。プラントを中心として、軽やかな演奏と長時間のステージを難なくこなしていた時期が終焉を迎えようとしていた時期を捉えた不変の名作オーディエンス録音が最も忠実にリリースされます、どうぞ今回もお見逃しなく！
