ZEPの929伝説は強し！当店がリリースいたしました「LIVE JAPAN 1971」OG盤LP復刻は驚異のスピードでのSold Outとなってしまい、改めてOG盤や929大阪の人気を再認識させられた次第です。そんな好評を受け、今回も当店は929サウンドボード音源の別バージョンのリリースを企画しました。「LIVE JAPAN 1971」リリース時における営業文からの続きとなりますが、929音源がCDでリリースされるようになってから数年の内に、この日のライブはほぼ全編がサウンドボード録音で聴けるようになりました。そんなCDの時代にふさわしい画期的な発掘が実現したものの、一方で音質の方はOG盤を始めとしたLPレベルの音質には到底及ばない、研究書をして「ろくなものがない」とまで言わしめる状態が続いてしまいます。90年代、どんなタイトルがリリースされてもバックでノイズが吹き荒れていたことが「あのLPの音じゃない…」それはマニアのフラストレーションを高めてしまうばかり。そうした状況から「LIVE IN OSAKA」のようなアナログLPを元にして音質の向上を狙ったアイテムがリリースされていたのです。

しかし21世紀に入るとZEPのトレーダー間において「サウンドボード録音のセカンド・ジェネレーション」という音源が出回り始めます。これは90年代のCD群と比べてノイズの現象が著しく、一部のマニアの間では「アナログLPに迫る」とまで言わしめたほど話題の音源となっていました。それはちょうど今から十年ぐらい前の話です。ただしこの時代のZEPトレーダーでビットトレント系の音源シェアに興味のある人が少なく、本当の意味でトレーダー間にだけ広まっていた音源、そして話題となっていた音源でした。とはいってもこの音源が秘匿されていた訳ではなく、単にネットを介して流通する機会がなかったというだけの話。
それから数年したところ、突如としてこの音源がネット上に現れ、それを機に爆発的に広まることとなりました。あの929サウンドボードのロージェネレーション音源です、話題とならない訳がありません。この時のネット上への流通をきっかけとして、ここ数年の間は基本的にこの2nd gen.を元にさまざまなアイテムがリリースされてきました。実はトレーダー間で出回っていた時代にはCD-R上のトラック割があいまいだったのですが、それがネット上に現れた際には整理されていたという利点もあります。それはともかくとして、あまりにも多くのアイテムがリリースされていて、それぞれに特徴を持ったアイテムを皆様がそれぞれ入手されてきたことでしょう。

もはや戦国時代と言ってもおかしくないほどの盛り上がりとハイレベルなリリース合戦が続いたものですが、各アイテムのリリース時におけるマスタリングなどの違いから。逆に大本である2nd gen.の実態を知られない方が多いのではないでしょうか。そこで今回、当店はここ数年の929スタンダードとも言えるこの音源に手を加えず、ありのままなサウンドボード録音をCD化しようと思い立ちました。

こうして大本の音源本体を聴いてもらえれば、この音源がそれまでの音源とは違う経路を辿って登場したことがはっきりと解ります。90年代のCDまでステレオで聴かれなかった「Dazed And Confused」の大半をステレオ状態で収録。そして何よりもノイズの減少。LP「YOU SHOOK ME」から90年代CDに使われた（海外経由と呼ばれる）テープとはまったく次元が違うナチュラルなテープ・サウンド。ライブの中盤だけややヒスノイズが強くなりますが、そこも今回は一切のイコライズをせずに収録しています。このパートでボンゾがよりによって「noisy…too noisy」と呟いてくれるものですから、そこは吹き出しそうになってしまいますが（笑）。
もちろん純然たるクリアネスとなれば、やはりOG盤LPがベストなのは変わりません。それは今回と前回の当店リリースを聴き比べ、むしろ実感していただきたいポイントでもあります。各所でメチャクチャに変化するピッチも出来うる限りの処理を施し、ベストな状態にしました。各所のカットも隠蔽せず、そのままの状態で収録していますが、中でもステレオで聴けるようになった「Dazed And～」における「Pennies From Heaven」をプラントが歌うパートで起きるカットなど、なるほど…ここに各アイテムはオーディエンス録音をインサートしていたのだな…ということが解るのも新鮮だと思います。ある意味オリジナル・ソースならではの種明かし的な楽しみ方もできることでしょう。近代929アイテムのルーツとなったロー・ジェネレーション音源を敢えて忠実な形で収録し、限定のプレスCDにてリリースいたします！
