マイク・ミラードが録音した「エディの日」はオーディエンス録音としての音質が別格のクオリティ、さらにはボンゾを中心としたZEPのウルトラ・アッパーなパフォーマンスも別格、ということでファンの永遠の名演としての地位を絶大なものとしています。そこで当店も先々週にエディをリリースしたところ、これがまた驚異的なスピードでSold Out。その人気も別格であることを痛感させられました。さすがはブルーベリーヒルや929と並ぶZEPベストライブ音源の一つだけのことはあります。

白いジャケットの包まれた先々週のリリースは五年前の「SEQUENCE OF EVENTS」からサンディエゴと切り離した単体再発だったにもかかわらず、同タイトルリリース時をはるかに凌いだ人気ぶりにも本当に驚かされました。ZEPファンでなくとも「エディ」だけは持っておきたい。そんな絶大なる人気の表れだったのではないでしょうか。
先々週のリリースが速攻でSold Outを記録してしまった後も白ジャケのエディを再発してほしい…そんなリクエストが後を絶ちません。当然でしょう、何しろ問答無用のミラード録音、しかもあの強烈な演奏です。当店としても要望に応えるべく追加の再プレスを準備していたところなのですが、このタイミングでJEMSがもう一度ミラード音源のニュー・バージョンを公開してくれました。一番の大きな違いは演奏の途中でテープ架け替えのカットに当たってしまった「Ten Years Gone」をミラード以外の人物によって録音された別音源で補てんしていたことです。
もちろん同曲のカット部分を補てんしたコンプリート収録も珍しいものではありません。しかし「SEQUENCE OF EVENTS」や白ジャケによる再発が評判を呼んだのは、JEMSが公開してくれたミラード音源のロージェネレーション・バージョンを忠実に収録していたからでしょう。ところが今度はJEMSが直々にカット部分をアジャストした(2 source mix)バージョンを公開してくれたとなれば、それはもうCD化するしかありません！

しかも5年前と同じくJEMSがミラードのマスターのファースト・ジェネレーション・コピーを再度トランスファーした今回のバージョンの音質がまた魅力なのです。前回のミラード録音らしい高音の伸びだけでなく、アナログ録音らしい太い迫力が増しました。あくまでウォーミーでありながらもナチュラルな音質はエディの新たなるスタンダードと呼ぶにふさわしいもの。77年の骨太なZEPのライブ・サウンドがミラードの神業録音とJEMSの最新アップロードによって蘇りました。
今回の音質の素晴らしさは衝撃のオープニング「The Song Remains The Same」のハイパー・ボンゾを聴いてもらえればいとも簡単に理解してもらえることでしょう。あのぶっ飛びドラミングの迫力が一段と引き立っているのです。そして当店が先週リリースしたJEMSによるミラード録音による77年LA公演ニュー・バージョンに続くリリースということから、今回も赤いジャケット・デザインと限定のプレスCDでのリリースとなります。前回の「白エディ」を逃してしまった方、今回の「赤エディ」こそお見逃しなく！
