Karla Bonoff’s live performances from the time when her first album became very popular after her debut as a West Coast songwriter in the late 70’s are recorded for two days. The place where the live was performed is New York, and the stereo line recording at the bottom line is the recording for the radio, and it is natural that the full length version was released in “WOLFGANG’S VAULT”. So both shows are the best stereo line recordings. Interestingly, she seems to have a cold on the first day of the stage, as you can tell by listening to the opening “Home”. Still, what is recovering as the show progresses is probably the skill she can do at the young age of 24. Of course, it was cured the next day, and the fact that this show was a complete recording with a large number of songs may have been recorded as a backup for radio broadcast editing the day before. 西海岸のシンガー・ソングライター、カーラ・ボノフが1977年に発表したデビュー作して最高傑作と評されるファーストアルバムに伴うニューヨークはボトムライン公演より10月4日と5日のレイトショウの２公演をオフィシャル級の超高音質ステレオ・サウンドボード録音で収録。冒頭Homeの後、「皆さん、こんばんは。ニューヨークは初めてなんです。ここは食べ物もおいしいし・・・」と、すれていないウブなムードを感じさせるようなMCを披露します。Someone to Lay Down Beside Meの前のMCで鼻をすすっているので風邪をひいているようですが、歌声には殆ど影響ないようです。Isn’t It Always Loveの前にアコースティック・ギターがハウリングし、「Thank you テステス Hello」と言うところも可愛らしい感じです。アルバム全曲をライブ披露していますが、4日のショウはイントロのI Can’t Hold Onが未収と思われます。前半にリンダ・ロンシュタットに提供したカーラの書いた名曲If He’s Ever Near、Lose Again、Someone to Lay Down Beside Me を披露します。Lose Againでは堂々たるムードで聴かせるリンダと対照的に、吐息を混ぜながらピアノの弾き語りで切々と歌いきるカーラの魅力的な演奏にニューヨークの観衆が押し黙って聴いている様子を非常にリアルにドキュメントしています。5日のレイトショウは、冒頭のアナウンス、そしてバンド全体で勢い良くスタートするI Can’t Hold OnからショウエンドのFaces In The Wind まで完全収録。If He’s Ever Nearの素晴らしいボーカルには誰もが感動することでしょう。この日は風邪も良くなっているようで、前日以上の高品質なライブを楽しむことができます。バックメンバーの好サポートも見事。ファーストアルバムを発表、ニューヨークでのボトムラインを成功させ、これから大きく成長していくカーラ・ボノフの初期ステージをオフィシャル級のライン録音で捉えたファン必聴盤。全ての洋楽ファンに聴いて頂きたい素晴らしいライブ・ドキュメントです。

70年代後半にウエストコースト系のソングライターとしてデビューし、ファースト・アルバムが大評判となった頃のカーラ・ボノフのライブを二日分収録している。ライブを行った場所がニューヨーク、ボトム・ラインでステレオ・ライン録音といえばラジオ用の録音で、その全長版が『WOLFGANG’S VAULT』で公開されたものが元になっているのは当然だろう。よってどちらのショウも最高のステレオ・ライン録音である。面白いことに初日のステージではオープニングの「Home」を聴けばわかるように、彼女は風邪をひいているようだ。それでもショウが進むうちに回復しているのは当時彼女が24歳という若さのなせる技だろう。当然翌日には治っているし、しかもこちらのショウが曲数の多い完全収録ということは、前日はラジオ放送編集用のバックアップに録音したのかもしれない。どちらのショウもボノフの歌とアコギを引き立てる、過不足ないバンドのバッキングが素晴らしく、ロック調はもちろん、カントリーやバラードも演奏してみせる懐の深さが見事だ。よって彼女のファンでなくとも、70年代後半のアメリカの女性シンガー・ソング・ライターによる一級品のライブ・アルバムとして文句なしに楽しめるだろう。この調子でファンをアッと言わせた今年の来日公演などもリリースされないだろうか。
