Despite being a blissful heavy metal paradise, the most unfortunate tour “MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988” in PRIEST history. The superb and superb video that allows you to experience the scene is usually released.
This tour is truly an unexplored region. Although it can’t be helped in the anonymous era, JUDAS PRIEST after “KILLING MACHINE” has full-scale sound boards and pro shots on almost every tour, and it is becoming official in the archive business on the official side. The only exception to this is “MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR”. There is a sound board for the New Haven performance, but it’s also incomplete, and the video is hopeless. Even now, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we haven’t seen a few pro shots of Hong. Perhaps it is a reaction to the official video & live version of the previous “FUEL FOR LIFE TOUR”, but it is a “secret” that you can’t see even if you want to see it.
This work is a super-superb image that you can peep into such an unexplored region. It’s an audience shot of “July 1, 1988 Providence Performance”. First of all, let’s confirm the position of the show from the whole picture of the largest unexplored tour in the history of PRIEST.

This is the whole picture of “MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR”. The Providence performance of this work is the concert that corresponds to the 10th performance of the “North America” ​​leg, which is the final stage.
The biggest point of this work is the highest quality. It is a top-down shot of the left side of the stage (K.K.downing side), but it is the best angle that JUDAS PRIEST occupies the view without any shadow of the head or arm of the front row, probably because it was the front row of the second floor seats. Even more amazing is the master freshness. Of course, it’s an era video shoot, but it doesn’t even contain a single line noise, and the beautiful image quality spreads across the screen … Oh, no. If you write such a cliché as gudaguda, you can’t tell the greatness of this work!
The visual beauty that embodies the ideal of such an audience is fierce, but the sound is even more overwhelming. Like the field of view, it’s a super clear sound with zero obstruction, but that’s not the case. It’s the only professional record on the tour mentioned above, and it’s a superb sound comparable to the big classic sound board of the New Haven performance. It’s not the type that is different from the sound board, but the slightly cluttered venue sound creates the godliness of Rob Halford, and the crystal clear is wonderful to scatter such as poor line recording. On top of that, there’s almost no audience noise, and it’s a full recording that you can’t hope for on the air … it’s the pinnacle of “MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988”.
And what is really amazing is the show itself entitled “Metal Mercenary”. Historically, the impact of the super-famous board “PAINKILLER” seems to have been drowned out, but “RAM IT DOWN” was the starting point for them to aim for “the core of HEAVY METAL”. And it was “MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR” that hit that feeling on the stage. The show is exactly “Utopia of heavy metals”, “The Hellion / Electric Eye” that embodies the ideal from the opening, and the best (and thoroughly heavy metals) set list at that time continues after that.
I think you’ll be dizzy just by looking at the list of songs below, but the most valuable of these is the repertoire of “RAM IT DOWN”. Starting with the title track “Ram It Down”, heavy anthem “Come And Get It” “Heavy Metal”, lyrical “I’m A Rocker” ………. In the studio album, the bland beat like a drum machine got a strange attention, but in this work of 100% of the original students, the taste of the song itself is out of the question. The super-famous song “I’m A Rocker” was revived in 2005, but the other three songs are extremely rare numbers that are only played on this tour. It is the pinnacle record.

Once, when the official live album “PRIEST … LIVE!” Was released, I was asked “Why is this tour?” Behind those words was the awesomeness of “WORLD VENGEANCE TOUR 1982” and “METAL CONQUEROR TOUR 1984”, but in reality, the next “MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988” is reminiscent of 1982 and 1984. It was a superb set of “THE BEST OF METAL” that was even more thorough.
It was a loss in music history that no professional shots were left on this tour. However, this work remained instead. The later “PAINKILLER TOUR” may have been the climax, but it is hot because it runs up the stairs of the resurrection leading to it. “MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988” ignited the indomitable fighting spirit while being overwhelmed by PMRC bashing and absurd trials. It is a super masterpiece that conveys the truth with the highest quality. One of the miracles created by the music genre “HEAVY METAL” and the culture of “audience photography”. Please take a look!

至福の重金属パラダイスでありながら、PRIEST史上もっとも不遇なツアー“MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988”。その光景を体験できる超・極上映像が通常リリース決定です。
このツアーは、まさに秘境。無名時代は致し方ないとは言え、『KILLING MACHINE』以降のJUDAS PRIESTは、おおよそどのツアーもフルスケールのサウンドボードやプロショットが存在し、公式サイドのアーカイヴ事業でオフィシャル化も進みつつあります。その唯一の例外なのが“MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR”。ニューヘイヴン公演のサウンドボードもありはしますが、それも不完全ですし、映像に至っては絶望的。30周年を迎えた現在でさえ、ホンの数曲分のプロショットも確認されていません。恐らくは１つ前の“FUEL FOR LIFE TOUR”でオフィシャル映像＆ライヴ盤を大盤振る舞いした反動と思われますが、まさに見たくても見られない“秘境”そのものなのです。
本作は、そんな秘境をのぞき見られる超・極上の映像。「1988年７月1日プロヴィデンス公演」のオーディエンス・ショットなのです。まずは、PRIEST史上、最大級の秘境ツアー全体像からショウのポジションを確認してみましょう。

これが“MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR”の全体像。本作のプロヴィデンス公演は、最終盤となる「北米」レッグ10公演目にあたるコンサートです。
そんな本作最大のポイントは、極上のクオリティ。ステージ左側（K.K.ダウニング側）の見下ろしショットなのですが、２階席最前列だったのか前列の頭や腕の影も一切入らず、JUDAS PRIESTが視界を占領する極上アングル。さらに驚異的なのがマスター鮮度。もちろん、時代柄ビデオ撮影ではあるのですが、線ノイズ１本さえ入らず、美麗な画質が画面いっぱいに広がる……あぁ、ダメだ。こんな決まり文句をグダグダと書いていたら、本作の凄味は伝えられない！
そんなオーディエンスの理想を体現した映像美も猛烈なのですが、それ以上に圧倒的なのがサウンド。視界と同じく、遮蔽物ゼロの超クリア・サウンドなのですが、それどころの話じゃない。前述したツアー唯一のプロ記録、ニューヘイヴン公演の大定番サウンドボードにも匹敵する絶品ぶりなのです。サウンドボードとカン違いするタイプでもないのですが、ほんのりまとった会場音響はロブ・ハルフォードの神々しさを演出し、クリスタル・クリアぶりは下手なライン録音など蹴散らす素晴らしさ。その上、ほとんどオーディエンス・ノイズが入らないわ、放送では望むべくもないフル収録だわ……まさに“MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988”の頂点記録なのです。
そして、本当に凄いのは「メタルの傭兵」と題されたショウそのもの。歴史的には超名盤『PAINKILLER』のインパクトにかき消された感がありますが、彼らが“HEAVY METALの核”を目指し始めたのは『RAM IT DOWN』がスタート地点。そして、その想いをステージにぶつけたのが“MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR”だったわけです。そのショウは、まさに“重金属の理想郷”でして、オープニングから理想を体現する「The Hellion / Electric Eye」であり、その後も当時のベスト（かつ、徹底的に重金属）なセットリストが続く。
もう、下記の曲目一覧をご覧頂いただけで目眩がするかと思うのですが、その中でも貴重なのが『RAM IT DOWN』のレパートリー。タイトルトラックの「Ram It Down」を始め、ヘヴィ・アンセム「Come And Get It」「Heavy Metal」、叙情で迫る「I’m A Rocker」………。スタジオ・アルバムではドラムマシンのような味気ないビートが妙な注目を集めてしまいましたが、本生100％の本作では曲そのものの旨みがムキ出し。超名曲「I’m A Rocker」こそ、2005年に復活を遂げましたが、それ以外の３曲はこのツアーでしか演奏されていない激レアナンバー。その頂点的記録なのです。

かつて、公式ライヴアルバム『PRIEST…LIVE!』がリリースされた際、「なんでこのツアーなの？」と言われたものでした。その言葉の裏にあったのは“WORLD VENGEANCE TOUR 1982”や“METAL CONQUEROR TOUR 1984”の凄味だったわけですが、実はその次の“MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988”こそ、1982年や1984年を彷彿とさせつつも、さらに徹底的な“THE BEST OF METAL”な極上セットだった。
このツアーにプロショットが残されなかったのは、音楽史上の損失です。しかし、その代わりに本作が残った。後の“PAINKILLER TOUR”こそ絶頂だったのかも知れませんが、そこへ至る復活の階段を駆け上がるからこそ熱い。PMRCのバッシングや不条理な裁判沙汰に叩きのめされつつ、だからこそ不屈の闘志に火が付いた“MERCENARIES OF METAL TOUR 1988”。その真実を極上クオリティで伝える超傑作です。“HEAVY METAL”という音楽ジャンル、“オーディエンス撮影”という文化が成しえた奇跡の１本。どうぞ、刮目してご覧ください！
