JUDAS PRIEST in the early 90’s was hit by the biggest crisis of leaving Rob Halford. The discontinued official video produced at that big milestone is a DVD.
The true identity of this work is the video work “METAL WORKS 73-93” released in 1993. There was also the best compilation album of the same title, but it is a history video released as a video version. Since the 1980s, many rock video works have been released with the spread of home video decks, but by the beginning of the 90s, the types have become more popular. Not only live videos and clip collections, but also many genre-specific compilations, video magazines, and other projects have been produced. Moreover, the HR / HM bubble collapsed at the same time. The main members were replaced and disbanded one after another, and many history videos were released that looked back on the history at that turning point. Ozzy Osbourne’s “History of Os” announced his retirement, BLACK SABBATH’s “Story Vol.1 / 2” reunited with Ronnie James Dio, and DEF LEPPARD’s “Vivian” joined by Vivian Campbell. Arise ”and so on … This work is a video work that can be said to be the JUDAS PRIEST version. At that time, I was overwhelmed by the shock of “withdrawal from Rob”, and suspicions and anxieties erupted, “Why did this happen?” And “What will happen in the future?” There were many fans who got the video for their explanation.
The masterpiece of such history will soon be out of print due to the nature of the video work at that time. After that, Rob’s return to metal → reunion, etc., made it difficult to make an official DVD, and now it is difficult to even see it. This work appeared there. The laserdisc version, which was the highest quality of the official products released at that time, was precisely reprinted from the Japanese version with the bilingual subtitles essential for documentaries, and made into a DVD.
The visual beauty is undoubtedly the highest peak in history. We have worked on many LD reproductions at our shop, but this work is the latest bullet. Using the mint quality board that the core collector had treasured, digitization was outsourced to an overseas specialized manufacturer. All the information contained in the LD is transferred to the DVD. I think there are many people who have realized the high quality of the collections that have been released so far.

The content of this work is the right way of history video. Rob, Glen. Looking back on the history of glory, centered on Tipton, K.K. Downing, and Ian Hill, various celebrities have also commented on how great Priest is. The mens are also gorgeous, including Roger Glover and Tom Arom, local senior Ozzy Osbourne, and KERRANG editor-in-chief Jeff Burton. Affected juniors will also feature Sebastian Bach, Kerry King, Rick Savage, Henry Rollins, and even LIVING COLOR.
The composition is in chronological order. そんな本作の正体とは、1993年にリリースされた映像作品『METAL WORKS 73-93』。同タイトルのベスト盤もありましたが、その映像版としてリリースされたヒストリー・ビデオです。80年代以降、家庭用ビデオデッキの普及と共にロックの映像作品も数多く発売されましたが、90年代に入る頃にはその種類も多用化。ライヴビデオやクリップ集だけでなく、ジャンル別コンピレーション、ビデオマガジン等の企画物も多く制作されるようになりました。しかも、時を同じくしてHR/HMバブルも崩壊。主要メンバーの交代や解散も相次ぎ、その節目に歴史を振り返るヒストリー映像も多くリリースされました。引退を発表したオジー・オズボーンの『ヒストリー・オブ・オズ』、ロニー・ジェイムズ・ディオと再結成を果たしたBLACK SABBATHの『ストーリー Vol.1/2』、ヴィヴィアン・キャンベルが加入したDEF LEPPARDの『ヴィジュアライズ』等々……。本作は、そのJUDAS PRIEST篇とも言える映像作品です。当時は「ロブ脱退」の衝撃に打ちひしがれ、「どうしてこうなった？」「今後はどうなる？」との疑念・不安が噴出。本人達の説明を求めてビデオを手にされたファンも数多くいました。
そんなヒストリーの名作も、当時の映像作品の性で間もなく廃盤。その後はロブのメタル復帰→再結成などもあって公式DVD化は望むべくもなく、今では見ることさえ難しい状況になっています。そこで登場したのが本作。当時リリースされたオフィシャル品の中でも最高峰クオリティであったレーザーディスク版、それもドキュメンタリーに必須な対訳字幕を完備した日本盤から精緻に復刻、DVD化したものなのです。
その映像美は間違いなく、史上最高峰。当店では数多くのLD復刻を手掛けてきましたが、本作はその最新弾。コア・コレクターが秘蔵していたミント・クオリティ盤を使用し、海外の専門メーカーに委託してのデジタル化。LDが封じ込めていた情報のすべてを余すことなくDVDに移し替えている。これまでリリースされてきたコレクションで、そのクオリティの高さを実感されている方も多いのではないでしょうか、

そんな本作の内容は、ヒストリー映像の正道。ロブ、グレン。ティプトン、K.K.ダウニング、イアン・ヒルの４人を中心に栄光の歴史を振り返り、さまざまな著名人達もいかにプリーストが偉大なのかコメントを寄せている。そのメンツも豪華で、関係者のロジャー・グローヴァーやトム・アロム、地元の先輩オジー・オズボーン、KERRANG編集長のジェフ・バートン。影響を受けた後輩陣もセバスチャン・バックやケリー・キングをはじめ、リック・サヴェイジ、ヘンリー・ロリンズ、さらにはLIVING COLOURまで登場します。
その構成は時系列。幼少期に聞いて育った鋳造所の騒音がメタル・ビートの原点というところから始まり、音楽を志したCREAM／ジミヘンの衝撃、デビュー時のメンバーが１人もいなかった「オリジナルJUDAS PRIEST」との出逢い、初めてギャラをもらったクラブを再訪、そして４人の出逢い……と、初期の現場を詳らかにしていくのです。
そして、話がデビュー段階に到達すると演奏映像もふんだんに登場する。映像のない初期曲は後年のライヴで代用されていたりしますが、最大インパクトだったのは1975年に出演したBBC“The Old Grey Whistle Test”。「Rocka Rolla」「Dreamer Deceiver」といった激レアな生演奏だけでなく、長髪ロブに衝撃を受けた方も多いことでしょう。
その後もCBS移籍やレザー＆スタッドへのイメージ・チェンジ、メタル・サウンドの発明、第１回MONSTERS OF ROCKやUSフェスティバルといった歴史的イベントへの参加、ファンの自殺裁判などなど……歴史に名高い事件を語っていくのです。今では有名な話も多いものの、やはり当事者たちの肉声だと面白い。例えば、ロジャー・グローヴァー。「プリーストのいないロック界なんて想像できない。未だに現役なんだから」と語るのですが、現在ではロジャー自身が75才で現役。当時40代そこそこだった面々に向かって言う台詞の時代感が強烈です。
また、各作品を本人達がどう思っているか話すのもヒストリー物の醍醐味。例えば、グレン。『POINT OF ENTRY』について「当時は完璧だと思っていた。振り返ってみると完璧じゃないかもしれないけど、ファンがバンドに期待していたアルバムじゃなかった」と本音を明かし、『PAINKILLER』に対しては「プリーストが正直にやりたいことをやるとこうなるという見本だ」と熱いのです。
そうして70年代／80年代を足早に辿った時計の針は「1993年」で止まり、イアンの「バンドの将来はヴォーカルがどうするのかによるな」で本作は幕を閉じる。その後も知る今となっては、その表情・声色さえ感慨深いのです。

バイオから想像するだけだった結成前からロブ脱退まで。JUDAS PRIESTが神として君臨し、新たな音楽「HEAVY METAL」を創出していった時代を総まとめにした映像作品です。使用されているライヴやクリップは不完全なものも多い（各映像の完全版DVDも下記にリストアップしておきます。コレクションの参考にしてください）のですが、数々のコメントに宿る輝きは現在も色あせていない。栄光の時代を濃縮して楽しめる１枚。どうぞ、史上最高峰クオリティでじっくりとご堪能ください。
