As you can see, this time we have 5 shows in all of Japan tour. So far, JOURNEY has visited Japan 11 times, but Tohoku performance is the second time in history. This work is an audience album of Sendai performance which I realized for the first time in 13 years.
It was a master who knows people in Tohoku who got such a rare live. The other day we delivered Jeff Beck ‘s finest album’ SENDAI 2017 (Wardour – 220) ‘, but it is the same recordingist as that masterpiece. If you’ve listened to Jeff, you’d probably come with a pin, but the strange quality using ‘Schoeps MK 4′ has also been passed on to this work. Of course, we can not simply compare because there is difference in the sound of the band / musicality and audience, but even if compared with the other performances of the same JOURNEY one head is missing. 本作に収められているのは「2017年２月４日：ゼビオアリーナ仙台」公演。今週はJOURNEY来日公演のリリース・ラッシュでもありますので、各公演の頂点録音を整理してみましょう。

このように、今回のジャパンツアーは全５公演。これまでJOURNEYは11度来日していますが、東北公演は史上２回目。本作は、13年ぶりに実現した仙台公演のオーディエンス・アルバムなのです。
そんなレアなライヴを収めたのは、東北で知る人ぞ知る名手。先日もジェフ・ベックの極上盤『SENDAI 2017（Wardour-220）』をお届けしましたが、あの大傑作と同じ録音家です。ジェフをお聴きになった方ならピンと来ると思いますが、「Schoeps MK4」を使用した異様なクオリティは本作にも受け継がれている。もちろん、バンドの出音／音楽性や客層の違いもあるので単純には比較できませんが、同じJOURNEYの他公演と比べても頭１つ抜けている。１階席の15列目付近で録音されたそうですが、まさに「まるでサウンドボード」を地で行くダイレクト感が素晴らしい……と言いますか、オーディエンス的な広がりが薄く、やや現実離れして感じられるほどの近さ。手拍子や喝采も吸い込んではいるものの、楽音があまりに近すぎて遠近感がおかしく感じるのです。現場となった“ゼビオアリーナ仙台”は約6,000規模と、13年前の“Zepp Sendai”の約４倍にもなるわけですが、そスケール感に迷うほどです。
特に凄いのがヴォーカルでして、マイクに流し込む息づかいまで分かる。アーネル・ピネダが歌い損ねて声が掠れてしまうシーンでは、「ここまで鮮やかに録音しちゃ可哀想かも……」と思ってしまうくらいのクリアっぷりなのです。もちろん、楽器隊も徹底的に美音。ニール・ショーンは軽くつま弾くピッキングニュアンスまでもが克明で、ジョナサン・ケインのシンセもキラキラと降り注ぎ、オーディエンス録音のウィークポイントになりがちな低音も豊か。それどころか、エフェクターの切り替えもクッキリとしており、MC等の無音部では現場PAから微かに漏れる「シー」という電気ノイズまで分かる。ナゾの爆巧サポート・シンガー：トラヴィス・ティボドーが歌う「Chain Reaction」も強烈です。
そのサウンドで描かれるJOURNEYの“グレイテスト・ヒッツ”は、とにかく胸を打つ。先ほど「アーネルが歌い損ねて……」とは書きましたが、それは他公演・他録音では聴き流してしまう程度のこと。そこまで本作がクッキリと録音されているという話であり、歌とギターが高らかにメロディを紡ぎあい、舞い狂うJOURNEYの美世界は揺るぎなくたっぷりと感じられる。セットは目も眩むようなグレイテスト・ヒッツで、全部がスティーヴ・ペリー時代。黄金の３枚『INFINITY』『ESCAPE』『FRONTIERS』から均等に厳選れた名曲群が軸となり、そこに『EVOLUTION』『DEPARTURE』『RAISED ON RADIO』の“コレぞ！”な１曲が散りばめられる。さらにサントラやシングルＢ面曲もアクセントになり、大定番だらけに見えながら絶妙なショウ運び。アルバムだけのライト層からコア層に至るまで等しく「やっぱ良いわぁ」「そう来るか！」のバイオリズムで翻弄する熟練の業なのです。

とにもかくにも、“ツアーNo.1”・“2017年の代表音源”と語り継がれるであろう、猛烈なクオリティ。レアな仙台公演、録音家不足と言われる東北にも関わらず、日本中のどこよりも超絶なサウンド。その美音世界で“2017年のJOURNEY”を描ききった大傑作です。恐らく、多くの方が実際にご覧になったショウのライヴアルバムをお探しでしょうが、本作はその次元ではない。たとえ、１回も観ていない方にも不可避な“てっぺん”の極上ライヴアルバム。今週末、あなたのお手元にお届けいたします。
